  • The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift in central Scotland. It is part of a Millennium project to reunite the Forth & Clyde canal with the Union canal into Edinburgh centre. The canals had been joined previously by 11 locks which were removed in the 1930s. This wheel replaces those locks by using two gondolas to raise boats by 24 metres in one go. Previous locks took a day to pass through, whereas the wheel allows the boats to drop or be raised in a few minutes.
    An amazing feat of engineering!

In all the time I lived in Scotland I don't understand how I never got to see this huge spanner-looking phenomenon! It's absolutely marvellous. And the Kelpies too! Maybe I just didn't like crowds! But hey, I think I'll make a date for the autumn when the midges are nearly gone and I might have me caravan so I can come back up for an extended visit. Maybe even stay!!Hooray! Cheers me dear! 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇮🇪🙋🙏

It's going to be here when you come back to enjoy it when you do. Have you listened to any of my Audio Podcasts on Scotland? Might give you some information which may be handy as a planning guide. cheers, John

Which clever engineer came up with this amazing invention? Is it used for every day life or just a tourist attraction? Thanks for this post!

Opened in 2002, the Falkirk Wheel was designed by British Civil Engineer and it’s used for every day use. 👍
