I'm finally getting back into printmaking (thanks to finding a speedball kit in the clearance section of hobbylobby) for the first time since leaving my art high school almost 2 decades ago and really wanted to see how much everything has changed, or rather how much easier everything has gotten nowadays... Since back then we had to use very large, very expensive presses for linoleum prints (we also had a machine for the plexi glass etching prints... I even learned, and was allowed to do it completely unsupervised at barely 15 years old was how to use ACID to burn your drawing/lines into a piece of metal... ah the good ole days at a specialized art high school in NYC where we were not only allowed to have but were required to bring/carry all kinds of weapons (xacto knives, box cutters, wood/linoleum carving tools, etc) not only to/in school but on all of the mass transit ie Buses/Subway trains to get to the school from the other boroughs, Queens for me! Ahh to be young again! Lol Printmaking was one of my favorite electives along with ceramics, and photography (we used b&w film in cameras with no built in flashs that needed us to enter all the required info so that our photos wouldn't be under/over exposed, grainy, dark or blurry. We then had to go into a converted bathroom that was darker than a darkroom aka pitch black so that we could pop open the film cartridge and without touching anything but the top/bottom edges of the film then roll it onto a circular wheel thing, making sure none of the film touched another piece of film or those frames were garbage, and then place that into a metal developing chamber that we then had to develop ourselves making sure used the right chemicals in the right order for the right amount of time each or boom all that work and all those photos were trash! Then we got to the darkroom and got to go crazy making all kinds of photos in different tones and overlaying two images and all kinds of fun... just as with printmaking we were allowed to use all those chemicals by ourselves/each other without any real supervision... They finally got a digital camera when I was a senior that cost over $5k that had a whole 12 or 15 megapixels... and now my phone has the same or even more megapixels and it's not even a camera lol)
So all of my favorite art forms required A LOT of equipment, space and $$$$ so when I saw that kit I said "heck yeah!" And bought it immediately. I came on UA-cam because 90% of the things I know are because of UA-cam or Google, the other 10% is what I learned after 3 bachelor's degrees and however many associate degrees... so yeah if I ever have kids I'm homeschooling them and they'll learn things that are ACTUALLY necessary like how to budget money or cook or read a loan or legal document AND they'll learn all kinds of awesome things that they'll not only be interested in but that they'll be excited to learn/do. Yes, I am aware that I type too much.
This was one of the first few videos that popped up and the first one I watched since I'm definitely going to be printing on fabric since I'm tired to boring and/or ugly reusable bags and want to create my own since I need them when I go grocery shopping.
I love, love, love this video! Too many other people just go "we're doing "x" today" only for them to tell you "you need a, b,c for this project" only for them to film themselves using a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i... with zero explanation on what, how, or why! For example, how all the "beauty gurus" film their makeup looks... I have never worn makeup in my life, because I never really cared, I'm allergic to life and I'm already OLD, but decided a few years ago to atleast try it and spent like $150 on makeup and brushes and whatever else and there was NOT ONE video that I found that explains what your tone is or what was a hooded eye or anything else because they would just go "Okay I'm going to finish my base and be right back!" And then there they are all done... like wtf! How is anyone going to learn how to do their make up if the "famous UA-cam beauty gurus" don't bother teaching us a damn thing about the basics... like yes, make up is art and I love all the fancy eye looks and all that BUT how can someone who is not only a beginner but a total makeup virgin actually learn what the heck I'm supposed to do! Sure I could go to Sephora or something and have them tell me everything I need, and a bunch of nonsense I don't need since, commi$$ons, but all I'll learn is this one specific color from one specific brand kind of matches my skin tone but that's all. They're not going to spend 3 hours explaining what my undertones are or why I need this or that or how/when to use this product vs the other ones and everything else in between!
For everyones ease tl;dr
I can't stand people that make videos showing us how to do something WITHOUT them clearly telling us what we need, how to use them, and what we have to do to achieve what they're showing us in the video. I'm glad I found this video first because you are a wonderful teacher!! You're not only talented but know how to break everything down and how to make it easy to grasp for beginners, or a returner like me, so that everyone can learn this art form that you clearly love which in turn gets us excited and makes us want to try it out! Thank you for the awesome video and I'll definitely be checking out some of your other videos!!!! Thanks again!

Printmaking is amazing and if you can ask the teacher if you can come during your lunch break to get more time in. That way you go from etching in Plexiglas, then carving your wood, then doing the linoleum in one color then in multiple colors. Make sure you do ALOT of prints on the first stage because once you finish that you carve out the next stage, and so on. There's no going back if you only make 10 of the first color and then you don't put the next color exactly where it should be. Also don't cut too deep because then the linoleum can get real brittle because then you might only need to cut 3 areas and then a 4th piece will just say "screw it, I'm done!" I'll say that you should work fast or talk your teacher into letting you go on your lunch period because if you finish early you get to go onto metal and it's awesome... I wish I could have done more on my metal but 1. It uses some kind of coating and 2. Idk what kind of acid is used to "etch" out the metal. (If you could ask your teacher about it and let me know because it's awesome af.)
God, am I old!!!!! But yeah always ask if you can come during lunch to get more time in ceramics (don't be a d!ck and put your project on TOP of someone else's to dry crushing someone's else's hard work! But yeah my momma still has the Pikachu coin bank I made 22+ years ago lol), printmaking, and photography (is everything digital now or do ya'll still have to use actual film.. I hope it the latter because it's fun going old school.
Because those are classes you CAN'T do at home, everything else can be taken home to work on. But yeah it's awesome, I hated LaG with all my heart but those 3 classes ALMOST made up for all the BS, narcissistic aholes, 90 year old teachers that MAKE you change a painting one day and then tells you that it's wrong because the proportion is wrong even those SHE made you change the proportions! Oh and the class critiques where they had to implement the "compliment sandwiche" because the critiques got so vicious (because of the narcissistic aholes that think they're the next Picasso or whoever) so the teacher made everyone say one thing you like about the painting, then what you don't like/needs work, then another compliment.
It was still 2 seconds of what they like, 20 minutes of hatred and another 2 seconds of what they like.
I am happy that those 3 classes were amazing and I got to learn a ton BUT LaG just burned my love of art until there was nothing left. I haven't picked up a color pencil, cray pas, pencil, or acrylic paint after graduating there. I know I went to college for a non art major BUT pre-LaG I was painting, drawing, etc every spare second I had... I'd get so into it I'd forget I had homework! But after LaG I didn't even want to look at someone's art LOL Thank goodness I took AP Art history and passed the test so I didn't have to take it again in college! Also if you take 4 years of language with AP being the 4th EVEN if you don't pass the AP test you won't have to take language either.... idk if that's still true but trust me, take all the AP classes you can so you don't have to waste your time and more importantly your money in college!

Wonderful video ... well executed and informative. Would you use Wax paper (in this example using the Handbag) placed between fabric layers to prevent ink from seeping through to the reverse side?

im just about to get back into lino printing....love your video, so do you have to seal (iron ) the ink to make it waterproof /washable? as i want to print on patches to make clothing out of , so needs to be washed, also can you get alot of items printed with their ink, as you said needs to be thick...just wondering due to pricing...thanks for soothing video x

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing this! Do you iron your fabric (in this case, tote!) before printing, or can it also affect the print if the fabric is ironed first? Can it affect the print if you iron after? How long do the prints take to dry? I love your print! Beautiful work and inspiring tutorial!

I’m glad you said it was ok to use screen printing ink to begin because I accidentally bought screen printing rather than block printing and was having a panick but you and a few other people have said it’s ok to use just better to get block printing which I will when I’ve used up this ink

Hi!!! How do you ensure the ink in the fabric and does not get removed with the wash? Do you use heat to dry the ink? I am working on my own designs and this is the last step I am missing… thank you!!
You can cover it with a layer of fabric medium, it keeps the ink, paint, any medium you use for a long time.

Great video!! Cute print, too. Do u lay down padding under your fabric like a pice of felt or layers of flannel?
I just use a thick tea towel, it also helps to stop ink going onto the other side of the tote bag or onto the table, I know some people use felt but a tea towel work just fine for me at the moment, I will definitely try using felt in the future

I’d reccomend using speed ball screen printing ink. Or if you’re doing something small, you can prob get away with India ink. I think both of those are water proof- I know the India ink is

i wanted to try printing on t shirts and your video really was super informative :D i was just wondering if the ink on the lino cut just be washed off with water and soap? also will the ink bleed after washing the printed fabric?
I use soap and water to wash the Lino and the roller while the ink is still wet and it works fine for me, I’ve never had the ink bleed or wash out of the fabric 💕💌

How does this hold up with washes?
If I’m printing on a shirt and I need to wash is, how do I do that?
Do you need to run the garment through the dryer or anything to set the ink, or how long should you let it dry?

I would recommend a cold wash 30 degrees c is what I use and I haven’t had any problems or loss of pigment 💕

Hi I've never used Eva foam so I'm not sure but it might be worth trying it out
Does the ink just dry by itself or fo you have to heat set it?
The ink just dries by itself it takes a couple of days to dry fully💕

I first did Lino printing at school but other than that I'm self taught I learnt a lot form printmakers on instagram

Yes the ink is permanent and can be washed in the washing machine at 30 degrees c💕
