    I agree with ALL of this! I have mostly inhaled all of the purchases I made when I first found UA-cam. And majority of them are unread! People feel such pressure to read more, including myself. I’ve had to ask myself all the time if I’m actually enjoying what I’m reading, or am I reading just to read. Less is more sometimes!

    • @libraryunbounded
      @libraryunbounded  8 місяців тому

      Indeed! And the worst part is, the pressure is coming from inside the house (so to speak). Nobody is pressuring us, we just feel like losers (for the lack of a better term) if we don't "perform" as highly as other people. I am a bit competitive by nature and I'm used to over performing, which frankly is such a stupid thing to be motivated by 😂 It's my life's work to overcome that (among other things)

    Since I started watching Booktube, I have read some hyped books outside of my comfort zone to see why they're so buzzed. So far, not impressed, and just makes me want to go back to what I know I like. I'm all for 'growing' but I'm definitely starting to take any recommendations from readers that don't primarily read what I like with a grain of salt. I'm with you on not trying to compete, with goals or specific books. Nice video!

      Thank you, Raymi! 💖
      Indeed, we sometimes get impressed by someone's personality, or nice way of speaking and wrongly assume that their taste matches ours. Especially if they have some serious following, because it naturally gets interpreted by the brain as legitimacy. And there's nothing bad in that, but we have to keep in mind that taste and interest do not depend on either of the above.
      I am curious now, though. Which popular book did you read because of booktube that left you less than impressed? (Feel free to mention more than one :)))

      @@libraryunbounded I don't typically read books categorized as 'literary fiction,' horror,' or 'thriller,/mystery' -- so I gave some a shot that were buzzing for awhile. Granted, I predominately listened to them, but I was still involved enough that I felt my reactions were justified -- meaning, I don't believe I would've liked it any better had I actually read-read them.
      To date, I wasn't much of a fan of: "The Measure," "The Good House," "Carmilla," "Hidden Pictures," "The Only One Left," and "They Both Die at the End." Most are well/decently written, just not for me -- there's enough grief in real life, I don't like escaping into a world where it's all sadness (3 of these left me feeling down.)
      I did actually enjoy "If We Were Villains," "The Viy," "The Butcher & the Wren," "Pretty Girls," and "How to Sell a Haunted House." So, not all a loss, and helping me to figure out what I do like in thriller/horror/mystery.

    Some great tips in here. One that I've started to live by is to not be afraid to DNF a book. As far as we know, you only get one life, so to lose a part of it by reading something because you feel obligated to, even if you're not enjoying it is to be honest, a waste of time.
    Thank you, your videos are incredible and so relaxing to watch

      And yes, that could've (and should've) been a point as well. DNFing is really helpful. I only recently started doing it (because I'm a completionist by nature) and it made me feel so free.
      Thank you for mentioning it! ✨

      @@libraryunbounded Oh my gosh you replied! Thank you. I feel like there's a lot of pressure in the booktube community to finish every book we start and I honestly think that DNFing needs to become a more 'acceptable' thing in the community 💜

    I read about one book a week, however I do have periods where I am ultra tired. I do not read when I feel that way or I only read fluffy books. The kindle saved me when I had babies since you can hold it in one hand.

    • @libraryunbounded
      @libraryunbounded  8 місяців тому

      Oh, that is a great strategy, Kim. Forcing yourself to read when you are exhausted doesn't help (of course depending on personality). So sticking to light reads is perfect.
      Indeed, I gifted my cousin a kindle because she has two small girls and she was telling me how she misses reading. Now she always carries it in her back pocket and as soon as she has 5 minutes she is reading - it's a new life, basically 😊

    Great tips!
    I agree wholeheartedly. You should never try to compete with other readers; you should only be in competition with yourself and your own goals. Reading is supposed to be fun, not feel like a chore.
    Personally, I'm a slow reader who just got back into a reading a few years ago and what helped me the most is setting a realistic goal for myself. I came to the realization that I would never read a 100 books a year because of how I read. I'm the type of person who likes to ponder things as I'm reading; I often pause to think about a passage I've just read and even have to reread passages sometimes (because I daydream a lot.😆). That's just how I process my reading, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of it. With that being said, I usually set a goal to read 12 books every year, and that is broken down to reading one book per month, which is something that I know I can accomplish. And because there is not so much pressure on myself to read TONS of books, I usually meet and even pass that goal. Yay!!! lol.

    • @libraryunbounded

      This is such a lovely thing to realise about yourself. And even more, to accept it. Because there is nothing bad in taking your time and allowing yourself to enjoy things in a slower pace. On the contrary.
      Frankly, I think we can all benefit from slowing the pace down in a lot of aspects (fully realising that it isn't always possible).
      Thank you for the lovely comment and I hope you have an amazing reading year! 💖📚

      Oh, I knoooow! This is such a good point! Back in 2018, after several years of only reading 2-3 books a year and all of them rereads, I found Sanderson and he single-handedly revived my love for reading. Of course, I have read some even more amazing books since then but because of that, he will always have a special place in my heart. And on my shelves :)

      @@libraryunbounded Never really had a huge slump, but I went through a period where I was reading just around 12 to 15 books a year, until I read “La sombra del viento” (The shadow of the wind) by Carlos Ruiz Zafón just when it had just come out. And I started reading more, and faster again thanks to it.

If only the Libby app could hear that one about having one or two books on the go. 😊 I try to get ahead of the game; and it always backfires with all the ones that were suppose to come in 10 or 15 weeks, coming at the same time as the ones with 2 weeks waits. 🙃This was a lovely video. Hahaha well, I understand the appeal of holding the books you want to read earlier, because... well, you can't know what will come when and also, they are nice books. Of course you don't want to miss out.
      But I think it's best to just leave it to chance sometimes. It reduces the stress of obligation and you can actually enjoy what you get :)
