    What an amazing introduction to falling.
    I really liked when you said don't put your arm before because it's a risk that you break your arm.
    Also, loved the explanation on how to get low before falling instead of falling from all the way from top.

    One good way to practice the Yoko Ukemi, is by doing Okuri ashi barai by yourself.

      Sarah J a well practiced breakfall really is one of the most important things you could get out of any martial art! In and out of combat, having good footwork and clean falls will prevent so many injuries.

    In my club, the starting position for Yoko Ukemi is same as the starting position for Ushiro Ukemi. Where you just sit on your feet.

    Excellent. Thanks, Matt. What is your suggestion (and others' here) about exhaling so that when one lands, there is no breath or less breath in your lungs?

      That's a great question, I've never seen judoka address this issue. I have always held my breath, and released just a little air on landing, but have heard some people say they really exhale on landing to help absorb the shock. I'd like to hear mere about it from more experienced judoka...

    Hi Matt
    Thanks so much for this excellent and informative video. I'm 43 years old and just starting Judo. Because I am older, I really want to make sure that I master falling especially if I want to do Judo for a long time, I've noticed that my forearms will sting or that I overuse my forearms when falling and prefer to land on my deltoids as this doesn't sting. Can you advise if this is normal or if there are any excercises I should do to stregthen my forearms muscles please.

      perhaps you are over emphasizing the contact with your forearms? Is it the surface skin stinging or are you feeling pain through your elbow and shoulder when you make contact? Be concious of unevenness in your landing, you want to feel even pressure most od the way down where the bpdy is touching the ground, if you land slap slap slap (thigh, hip, midback) the body isnt connected smoothly. There are many ukemi variations, and also depend on from where you are falling from. Which fall do you use your shoulder on? So long as you can land gently enough. You'll see the breakfalls bleed off the force/energy of the technique applied to you, so you land safely. the arms out act as a brake and a split second brace. the slap is relaxed, you're sinking the extra energy into the ground (before you roll head over heels, unless you indend that). Hope your train ing has been well!

      Even distribution of weight will prevent any one part of your body suffering in falls. Concentrate on being flexible and fluid, and note the power in the demonstrators core, which comes from Judo practise and absorbs the shocks. Best advice? Visualise yourself doing it perfectly, then when you come to do it, it will all 'fall' into place. It's progressive, my friend, each time you practise you get a little better. Get the basics right no matter how long it takes, and don't stress over what colour your belt is, I've seen Brian Jax practising in a pyjama jacket with a beginners belt on. He knew he was good, and it's enough to know. May you rise high and fall gently, amigo mine ; )

    They always told us to get a lower center of mass by making yourself smaller, the hit on the ground was more like a "task" to prevent arms being loose or stretched out (non ideal positions). I personally thought Aikido was a more elegant way of working with mass and force.

      When you stretch out your arms and legs your spreading the shock of falling more evenly, it's to prevent injuries

    Is a forward break fall different to a rolling break fall (Zenpo Kaiten Ukemi)?

    Can any of these techniques be utilized in actual hand to hand combat like say if someone throws you over their shoulder (and i am not talking about mock fighting like they do in martial arts competitions. I am talking about an actual fight)

      Notice side and back breakfall leave you in good positions to quickly regain your feet or put opponent in guard if necessary.

      I've been in over 10 street fights and have never been thrown over someone's shoulder. These techniques help if you receive a powerful two handed shove to the chest. VERY common.

    I don't understand - when you are thrown, you don't have the option to bend your legs and get close to the ground, as the instructions to your videos say.

      No but drilling with correct form will build muscle memory and you will reflexively reduce damage if you are thrown. The better you dril the more you can drill and the less you will get hurt, which means you can train -your- throws more which means you will be thrown less.
