It's times like this when I just LOVE living in the modern age. Such a specific topic with such a well produced video! Thank you Armchair Historian! thank you Squarespace!
Recommendation: Make a video like this but longer, “the evolution of military uniforms” where you cover the entire period of uniforms, spanning from ancient akkadia, to modern day america.
I sort of agree but sort of don't. Field uniforms became wayyyy better post-WWII. I should know, I own a BW uniform from the 80's. However, the ceremonial uniforms changed more to look like American uniforms. Kinda sad that they abandoned a lot of their military tradition, albeit entirely understandable. The Luftwaffe remained practically unchanged even to this day in terms of dress uniforms. As for east Germany, their uniforms were basically Wehrmacht uniforms with some new fabrics and patterns. Furthermore, flecktarn, which I also own some of, is based off of WWII pea dot prototypes. Cool stuff :)
Can we all appreciate how the animations from The Armchair Historian are getting better and better as time goes on. I am not sure if this dude animates himself, but whoever does, congratulations on progression in animating and overall drawing dude!
@Omry Goldwassermy comment was about the tommys and their firestorms the sovjets had their gulags till gorbatschow wich where only better in the point that in theory the prisoners where not murdered per gaschamber, but killed by the cold, starvation, sickness or punishments. In germany they too are called deathcamps for a reason.
@@matrix9225 What are you talking about? Don't judge a comment, you don't understand. Is has nothing to do with nazis or fascism! It makes fun about the strange pronunciation of those words in the video. And of course that the way, the narrator spells H&K sounds like a crazy military softdrink.
One error: the Pickelhaube was not metal but leather, still the ceremonial helmet it always was but was fitted with a field gray helmet cover during use in WWI.
You have forgotten the steel and Tombak ( german name of this copper based metal mix) used by prussian and bavarian cuirassiers, saxon heavy cavallry and some palace units like prussian Leibgendarmen'. Also after a short time the stored argentinian cow lesther was out, so as a replacement helmets made of felt vor stamped sheet metal had been made. Decasdes ago , i saw such helmets in a no more existing museum.

I have a suggestion: If you think German uniforms (specifically the SS uniform) are nicely designed, maybe check out the song "Deutschland" by Rammstein (official video). would be highly interesting to not have a look at just the combat fatigues but the formal uniforms of the German Army. Cos that...is a different beast. Especially since it's said to be all filled with tradition and meaning. Like I know the belt we have for our formal uniforms comes from the medieval Teuton knights times which is way far back but there's so much more.
@@historyradar9654 he mentioned it in the video. They had a few options of the Haube available. For canons for example, they didn’t had a spike at the top, but a sphere (most of the time I assume, I saw that on multiple pictures)
The attention to detail is amazing in regards to the firearms. I love the fact that just prior to 1901 the German Soldier is armed with a Gewehr 88 Commission rifle and when it came to 1914 the Gewehr 98 has got its "roller coaster" sights.

the daily uniform of bundeswehr heer (army) is still from the same family of traditional german army uniform, grey colored, collar patches, cuff titles, etc....the modern luftwaffe uniform is even more closely looked alike with that of WW2 luftwaffe
A nice "fun"-fact: The Eastgerman Army, or NVA, did only use rarely "Flecktarn" (Mottled Camouflage) for there fielduniforms, but mostly "Strichtarn" (Line Camouflage), because Eastgermany and Eastern Europe had more coniferous forests than deciduous forests.

Damn fashion has degraded after the introduction of WW2 german uniforms
@Brent Tar field uniforms prioritize utility over style.
The non combat uniforms exist for that reason.

That and the pickelhaube wouldn't have a spike if it was battle gear.

I’ll be honest I’ve always admired the German uniforms, it’s just so interesting how formal they all seemed
I have a suggestion: If you think German uniforms (specifically the SS uniform) are nicely designed, maybe check out the song "Deutschland" by Rammstein (official video). There are many scenes depicted from German history and one scene is with Richard Kruspe wearing that uniform. He mentioned that he was uncomfortable wearing it but I think it still looks good.
