9 Year Old Corporal

  • In August 1914 Momčilo Gavrić was orphaned at 8 years old and was adopted by unit that took revenge for the loss of his family. Assisting the troops during battle he was unflinching in his bravery and was promoted to Corporal at the age of just 9 years old. He fought in the great war and saw action in WW2 once again fighting the Germans and remained defiant even after his capture. An incredible story of bravery, friendship and duty.

To add to video - he survived the slaughter of his family solely because his dad sent him to uncle to borrow a cart. According to what his son said, he was haunted by the image of his family being hanged (mother, father, four sisters and grandma) and his house burnt to the ground to the end of his days. The murderers were from Austro-Hungarian 42nd Home Guard Infantry Division, also nicknamed "Devil's Division" for their horrible crimes.

One important thing he also was part of "Solunski" front that brought the end of WW1, so basically he was from the very beginning of WW1 to the very end of WW1.
There's a excellent Serbian movie depicting real historical figures "King Peter the First" or "Kralj Petar Prvi", of course film is about King Peter but also one of the main characters is Momčilo Gavrić and tells his and entire Serbian infantry story from the beginning to the Crete, later Serbia rejoined the war and fought along side French and sometimes British to reclaim all of Balkan.

His family was more than "harmed", they were massacred by Austro Hungarian troops, like many others during the savage invasion and occupation of Serbia.
I encourage anyone interested in WW1 history to read about Momčilo Gavrilivić, story is way longer and obviously cant fit in a short video, but im really glad this story is covered, hopefully it sparks some interest for "forgotten" front of WW1.
And i would also recommend reading about retreat of Serbian army and civilians across the Albanian mountains. Its an incredible story of struggle for survival. Never before or since has something like that happened. It was such an incredible feat that survivors who managed to return alive to Serbia received an award called "Albanska spomenica".
There is a monument built in city of Loznica, it belongs to our boy, Momčilo.

As a Serb, I really love this Yarnhub video. It takes a big difference from any other Yarnhub videos. Hell, even other videos from channels such as Extra History, Eastory, and so on can't compare with this single video. It takes a story that everybody knows and nobody has covered, goes into detail, and then release it to the public. Although some chunks were left out, this was top-notch. I really wish to see more historical videos focusing on Serbian history. But not just Serbian history, but other histories from other minor countries like the Czech Republic, Estonia, and many others! Besides that, great work Yarnhub. Gavric: *tips soldier's hat in appreciation*
    Small context:
Mariya Vasilyevna Oktyabrskaya was a Soviet tank commander (T-34 medium) who joined the army to avenge her husband's death in Barbarossa. She served the Red Army valiantly until dying from injuries in 1944 while trying to fix the 34's track.
Gavric took his revenge too, and never gave up. I feel the two would find the other quite amiable to talk with.

For a second, I thought this is the story of Sergei. After he's village got burned down after helping Russian partisans, the boy was found in a forest covered in scabs and bug bites. After the Russian scouts found him and take him into the regiment, when he was 3 or 5 years old when he joined. He did a lot of things like finding German artillery spotters inside a pile of hay, helping his adopted father who is commander of the regiment survive a couple times getting buried by artillery explosion, carried machine gun ammo to the machine gunners and many more. He was the mascot of the regiment, he even requested a child officers uniform and a custom rank was made named Junior Officer. This uniform almost got him killed when one time, a German bi-plane mistaken Sergei as an officer and shot in the leg. Another time, he was visited by a general that gave him a Browning pistol as a gift. He's adopted father would also marry a nurse in the regiment that Sergei was really fond of.

Another story of a young soldier that would like to see yarnhub do is James Charles Martin he was the youngest Australian known to have died in World War I. He was only 14 years and nine months old when he succumbed to typhoid during the Gallipoli campaign. He was one of 20 Australian soldiers under the age of 18 known to have died in World War I.

O prvom svetskom ratu sam krenuo da učim pre dve godine, hvala ti što si me podsetio o Momčilu Gavriću, on je bio jedan od naših najvećih ličnosti tokom prvog svetskog rata.

Brilliantly told and illustrated. A truly great story of endurance, humanity and love, and pure, straightforward simple guts. I know next to nothing about events on the Eastern Front but am very glad to have watched this film. Thanks.

You should also cover the similar story of Sergei Aleshkov, he was rescued by a Red Army unit when 6 years old at the time, and ended up being adopted by the unit's commander. He is considered probably one of the youngest soldiers in ww2.

they were crossing Albania by walking over mountains entire Serbian army with people that fallowed them, also the king Petar his son and entire government were going with them. It was extremely cold winter some local Albanians helped them and some were waiting for soldiers to die so they can steal their weapons, sometimes Albanians attacked smaller groups lost behind. And the biggest problem was food, they were starving they were walking from one to three months, from around 300 000 Serbs that went over Albania only around less than 200 000 survived.
And the point is they didn't want to surrender at any cost because they knew what was done to the prisoners
