    Thanks for the chat and being such a good sport about trying my camera out! I loved seeing your take on the camera and monochrome only in general. It's a good exercise for anyone to do every now and then. Whether with film, jpeg profile, or monochrome converted.
    P.s. that chunky Pentax is so cute. Looking forward to that 😀

      How many cameras have an option to shoot monochrome? I’ve been using a Olympus Pen F monochrome mode. Quite nice, I know, it isn’t a Pentax. Sorry about that. It is compact and easy to use. I suppose I could use a Pentax Q? If I had one.

      To be fair. I also use a Pentax MX and an ME. I’d buy an LX if I could. Or one of those rare MSX cameras (did I get that right). I tend to like film.
      The medium format digital 645z, now!

    Open Source raw converters like Darktable and RawTherapee can process raw pictures from monochrome-converted cameras without prior file conversion. You only need to switch their Demosaicing method to "Mono" (Rawtherapee) respectively "passthrough/monochrome" (Darktable). Both use libraw as their underlying demosaicing engine, which is also used by Monochrome2DNG.

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness 2 роки тому +2

      This is true, me and another person who recently got a converted Pentax have been experimenting with other methods. For some reason I couldnt get dark table working properly, but the other photographer could.

    UPDATES + CORRECTIONS:
    MG Leisure who did this beautiful conversion corrected a misunderstanding on my part as to what gets effected in the conversion process. I thought it was the shake reduction that was effected but he said "only the ultrasonic dust removal function will not work in some models, but this is not shake reduction (SR). SR will always work and is not related to sensor conversion."
    Additionally some have asked why convert if you can just switch to B+W in camera or in post from a color image. I sadly lost the clip where I talked about that so it didn't make it into the edit but in short, the technical advantage is that images are sharper (no anti aliasing filter) and have lower noise (the removal of the color filter array let's more light onto the sensor). James has a good overview in his review of the camera here: ua-cam.com/video/jRees9FA88U/v-deo.html I'll add that the more nuanced advantages is just the incredible tonality of the sensor with the CFA removed as well as the creative limitation of not being able to switch the profile back to color. There is something intangibly brilliant about the experience and I highly recommend it.
    Finally, Florian Cramer pointed out below that "Open Source raw converters like Darktable and RawTherapee can process raw pictures from monochrome-converted cameras without prior file conversion. You only need to switch their Demosaicing method to "Mono" (Rawtherapee) respectively "passthrough/monochrome" (Darktable). I’ve really enjoyed seeing your images from this camera show up on IG. For a long time I looked at Leica making monochrome cameras and rolled my eyes. It seemed like a gimmick and a way to fleece money from dentists and lawyers who wanted to buy an expensive camera. But I recently managed to score the original Leica M Monochrome, which is essentially the M9 stripped of its Bayer array. I have been simply blown away by what this 13 year old camera can make. The dynamic range is much better than on normal CCDs and like you I’ve found myself editing them only minimally. I’ve pushed to ISOs that I’d never try on my M9, and the grain just comes out looking like film. I’m a true believer in it now, and at some point I intend to pick up a Pixii as well.

    I've always been obsessed with Monochrome only cameras and that's probably why I interviewed the owner of MaxMax all those years ago (it's on Steve Huff), but to be totally honest, once I got a Foveon (dp1) I felt less and less like a "regular" monochrome camera did it for me. Since SPP remembers the color profile you've selected, I almost never get tempted to look at the color versions, and only the sd Quattro do I choose to shoot in color...strange, I know. Having my DP2M is probably the reason I got the M240 instead of the Mono version...they ONLY Foveon user that shoots 99% Mono. :P

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  2 роки тому +4

      This truly is a shining light for the Foveon.Totally different experience but man you know how much I love my Sigmas. This camera feels a bit more cinematic dare I say simply because it's softer and you can put those limited lenses on and feel like you're living in a movie. I mean, gotta have both amirite?? :P

    Interesting vid and collab! Just to share: in 2021 I challenged myself to shoot only monochrome for 365 days, both film and digital (monochrome jpeg mode). I honestly found it difficult to abstain from color! For me it was a sacrifice, akin to abstaining from ice cream or meat, haha. Going exclusively mono for a week or a month is a fun project, but a whole year was just too much for me, haha!

    Very interesting. I did some photos the other day around the old part of my town and I don't normally do much post-processing. But I had a play with some of the standard filters available in the Apple Photos App and the Noir profile certainly gave my photos a definite improvement. I will export the colour and B/W versions and share them on line. I might also repeat the shots with some FP4 B/W film.

      @@OneMonthTwoCameras I love using my Sigma DP1 as a Hasselblad XPan clone: set the format to 21:9 and JPG to B&W, but also saving as RAW as a reserve (remains full colour and 3:2). There is no anti-aliasing filter and there is no colour filter array to begin with: the creaminess of the results is fabulous. I haven't had any reason to look at the RAWs so far and have some fabulous results from a recent trip to Scotland...if only Instagram would allow the 21:9 format...
