Join these three Adventure Riders as they go to the heart of the Australian Outback and venture in some of the most remote and inhospitable country that the land down under has to offer. In this vid, ol’ mate Steve shows a little of what goes on behind the scenes as he prepares his bike for this trip.

Welcome back to the small screen Steve. Looking forward to my next vicarious adventure. Ep1 was a good warmup. I have 2 sets of wheels, one for road and one for off-road and sometimes I huff and puff that I have to change wheels. Having to change tyres all the time ….. stuff that! I like the look of the TKC70 rocks.
Hi Mick, I can afford to get someone to change my tyres but I like to keep in practice for when I am out in the field. The TKC70 Rocks did not disappoint. It lasted the journey (watch this space) and still has some left in it. I don’t think I’ve ever fitted road tyres to the bike. The bike is a tool that I use to get a job done….I usually only use the blacktop to get to the dirt. Next vid out later this week (I think).
I find that’s what’s happening to me too, my road wheels/tyres are sitting in the corner going hard. I bought the bike for dirt roads and scrub but the BMW club in vic does a lot more road rides than scrub rides. Luckily my bike came with 2 sets of wheels and it was not such a big deal to set up for both (although when my TPMS sensors went they all went together so I was up for 4 hence my message to you some months ago as to how you handle TPMS sensor replacement - I figured that if there was a reliable DIY way of managing this you’d know it). Seems OEM is the way to go. So I’ve resorted to relying on the network to pick up any low mileage sensors that come up occasionally and that failing I adopt the Homer Simpson way of managing tyre pressures - I replace the TPMS valve with a stock schrader valve put some gaffer tape over the warning light and rely on the squishy feel when going round a corner to tell me I have a pressure issue.

I’ve got my monies worth outta them. I take shorter tyre irons out bush…the longer ones make tyre changing easy but would be too big and heavy to pack. Thanks for watching.

WRT balancing tyres. I have had great success with using ceramic beads on both tubless and tubed tyres. You can always carry some additional beads in the off chance you need to un-seat your tyres.
I’m not sure if these are an option with the tyre pressure monitor units fitted to the rims…I’d have to investigate further. Thanks for the heads up.
Good to see the amount of gear you have, spread out like that. Suddenly I don't feel overstocked. Have a great trip.

Hi Nerb, you’ll find it great…we bumped into a Daryl Beattie tour (all Africa Twins) just east of Punmu but other than that we did not see a lot of traffic. I won’t give too much away but we can discuss the detail before you depart on your journey. Watch this space.
Steve, you need to make a wheel balancer, you don't need the fancy axle clamps as I just use a 1/2" socket extension bar between two stands, done it that way for 25+ years. Great video.

Looking forward to this one Steve! Great setup and good to see you sticking to the tried and tested kit instead of looking like a power-ranger like some guys do. You still generate great content despite, what looks like, tried and tested camera equipment - maybe not the latest or greatest bank-busting equipment. Would love to see a vid one day where you show us what camera setup you use....Good luck with the trip and keep the rubber side down......

Hey mate, love the riding content. In your opinion as a man of experience, what's your choice of tyre for the 1200 adventure if looking for a 80% road/20% dirt option? Cheers
Dunno...I only ride the blacktop to get to the gravel. Something like the Heidenau K60 Scout or Motoz Tractionator GPS might be suitable. They are both 50/50 tyres. I dont even know if there is such a thing as a 80/20 tyre. Good luck. Thanks for watching.
Love Steve's vods too! I have always had great results with my Tiger 955 with Shinkos ..the 704 for 80% riding or the more aggressive 804 big-block. And at a great price.
@@nsrlegaltech yeah I've been running the Shinko 705 for a while now. Seem to be doing the job so unless there's a better option I'll stick with them 👌

I have just returned to NZ from a trip from Darwin to Melbourne o
n DRZs we stored in Darwin before Covid.
I carried spare chain and sprockets, new rear tyre, chain breaker, new chain /sprockets ( which we used. )
I always think I carry too much in the way of tools and spares, but we had 4,600 kms before the first service stop, where we had ordered tyres weeks before.
Unfortunately I dumped my bike heading into Brisbane and broke 7 ribs. Very painful at the great age of 67. I have sold the DRZ and will buy a T7 before the next Australia trip.
Off to USA in August, where we have DRZs stored.

Hi DJ Spindler, the tyre performed as I expected. We covered 6,400km and tyre was pretty well toast by the time we got back. Good tyre for dry conditions…not great in creek crossing but every tyre is a compromise. I’d use them again. Thanks for watching.

Hi Aaron, you must have been a lurker for a while….the earlier R1200 was written off at 140,000km after having a fire under the seat. I’ll keep this bike for a while yet….it still has some adv km left in her. Watch this space.

So do you use tubes for emergencies on the inside of these tyres or just puncture repair kits on them? As a road biker only I don't really understand where tubes come into it. Cool to watch the process!
I do take tubes with me in case i tear a sidewall. If it is a straightforward puncture repair (nail, small hole) then tubeless tyres are just plugged in situ using the tubeless repair kit (lots of examples here, www.google.com/gasearch?q=tubeless%20tyre%20repair%20kit&tbm=&source=sh/x/gs/m2/5). Usually you do not even have to remove the wheel off the bike. Most of us carry a small compressor to re inflate the tyre. Thanks for watching.

Hi MM, geez, I’ve not had much to do with the 1150’s but I know someone who has one that has clocked up nearly 500,000 Adventure km’s and would swear by it. All I can suggest is to be guided by the reviews.

Hi Michael, my bike (R1200) handles good gravel roads so well that you might look at the speedo and realise you are going 130. That’s the problem! You find yourself ‘in the zone’ and come up to a bend and then realise you’re going to overcook the corner. You have to stay focussed but the big bike needs a particular skill set to make sure you survive the ride. Not everybody has it (the skill set, and I’m not tryin’ to be a wanker when I say that). Keep watching…next vid out this week (I think).
If you have to do about 2k kms of bitumen before the ride starts on the tanami then how annoying is it to carry 2 tyres and change them before the dirt starts? Save you wearing out the new tyres before you really need them?

Do you reckon 50/50 tires (dunlop trailmax mission) would be suitable for this kind of trip you did?
I think it would be ok on the rear (in the dry, in the wet would be a different story). I wouldnt recommend it for the front...I would lean to something more aggressive for the front. After all, you steer with the front. Thanks for watching.

Hi coobye, the motion pro bead breakers come with me but I pack 3 short tyre irons for the trip. The long tyre irons make it look easy but would be too long to take out bush. Thanks for watching.

Great vid Steve, not sure why my comment from yesterday is not showing up. You thought about having a diagnostic device with you on trips? I always take mine on trips with my GS as sometimes it's something simple you would have no idea about if you weren't able to scan the bike! Happy to help provide advice if you want
Hi Bazza, I have never considered it although maybe i should. The Club has the tool but I've never had any experience with it. The bike has been so reliable that maybe I've been sucked into a false sense of security.
@@mongreldogproductions I'm more than happy to talk you through the options offline if you want mate. It's really helped me a few times on the road with my 2016 GS. I had an issue with the front ABS speed sensor that caused a few issues but I easily resolved it. Sensors can cause a lot of issues sometimes. When it had the issue the keyless stopped working too so could not turn the bike off. All I had to do was a long 5 second press on the keyless to sort it out. Really worth it mate

Why are you not running the standard size tyres on your K51 R1200GSA LC? I see your old rear was a 150
Hi Micheal, very perceptive. Both front and rear were tyres fitted to pre 2016 models. From 2016, these big bikes came out with a lower profile tyre (probably to improve road handling). The lower profile tyre meant my rim was closer to the ground. Rim damage is not uncommon if you hit an object (rock, tree root etc) at speed in Outback conditions. The higher profile tyres give me a little more distance between the road and the rim. Low profile tyres on an Adventure bike??? What a crock of shit.

@@AndrewWilmotAu my preference is to run the tyre size fitted to pre 2016 models… 110/80/19. The low profile tyres won’t help the handling of a big Adventure bike off road so you might as well try and prevent rim damage by using the higher profile tyre (imo). See you on the other side.

Hi IATPMOA, Display purposes only (for the purists)...recommended tyre pressures for the R1200. I actually run them a bit softer but they have to be within 10-15% otherwise the low pressure light keeps flashing. Thanks for watching.
