    Judging people on their English is a colonial slave mentality. I am glad youngsters these days are getting over such stereotypings. And, films too are playing major role in eradicating this slave mentality.

    In this film, English is just a means to convey the real moral of the story. Indian housewives are more capable and deserving of respect than they are accorded. The daughter is a typical teenager who thinks everything her mom does is uncool. The husband is another typical Indian character that thinks the marriage revolves around him and that his needs are more important than hers. The struggles with English just made this more relatable to the male audience too and that is all they are focussing on in the comments.

    • @UKpowerunleashed
      @UKpowerunleashed 2 роки тому +26

      Yeah exactly. All these colonial slave mentality comments are cringe. My parents certainly didn't put me in an english medium school because they were suffering from slave mentality. They put me there so that I can be well equipped in this competitive world.
      This movie was more of an ode to Indian housewives who are warriors but are either shamed in the modern society or not given the importance that they deserve.

    If you want to know how English became societal stature in India, and Hindi is frowned upon, you can read about Macaulay's Minutes and Wood's Dispatch... @@Anmolnegi-yw7hg a lot of things you're saying seem to be stereotyping the south a little. The fact is Hindi is one of the official languages of India. Upto a point even urdu was very common in the northern part of India before the government actively sought to remove it due to the feeling toward muslims.. similar to what's happening now a days too. The hindi movies trying to represent South have been playing on the stereotypes that North Indians have of the south. So of course the south will have a problem with that. And also the fact that south has soooo many amazing actors and actresses but the north knows nothing about them, not even their names.. But if no-one knows SRK or Salman or Aishwarya, that becomes a "how do you not know THIS!!" also in the hall of fame for actors and actresses.. there is little mention of South film and actors.. and NO mention at all of the north east film and music industry. On top of that.. the north is always defending their stance of being ignorant about things. But just trying to learn a few words of the language of the south or listening to music from the north east.. I think that would help in bridging the gap that others feel.. and if the people of the north take the first step in that.. what's wrong in that.? Plus the south DO know hindi.. just not very fluently. Saying 'please' or 'hello' or 'thank you' in another indian language is not very difficult. It's all indian anyway. XD Learning about our own people shouldn't be a thing to resist.

    This is one of my favorite films.
    English is not just a language in India, it's defines your class sadly.
    Let me give you one common example
    Whenever a person started losing an argument he or she will start speak in english to suppress the opposite one[ if the person is not good at english]
    This is how it is 🤷‍♀️

    • @ghazalrehsi5953
      @ghazalrehsi5953 2 роки тому +1

      Not all the time though. I generally used to switch to English coz that was easier for me to speak. If I wanted to make some good points.. my brain would automatically work in English since I was way more comfortable in that language. I got alot of hate for not having an argument or debate in hindi or switching midway.. but the truth is in hindi I couldn't express my points very well. I didn't want to make the other person feel uncomfortable talking in hindi..so I would start a conversation that way. But if we're move to more debate type situations I had to shift to English. It's not to win an argument or anything, it's just that I say my points better in English. But people always took it negatively and actively made fun of me saying "yes , very good. Be an english persons daughter. " And "the English left and left you here ". I was very isolated because of that. The problem is people always just jump to conclusions and make statements like that.

    The reason this movie touched a chord is because it actually shows the reality of many housewives. Many men are missing those finer points because the English point is more relatable to them - but the main point of this is how housewives in India have usually been less educated ones (due to women's education not being prioritized for a long time and now it's changing) Many Women of Shashi's age have been to school till 4th or 7th grade. Then they are kept home and taught home skills. So they get left behind when conversations on English happen, they are considered uncool, naive or incompetent even though they are quite competent and can be savvy and business minded. She learns English but with that her family change their perception of her - they respect her more, not because of English but because she showcases that she can do anything she wants if she puts her mind to it. They assumed that just because she can't speak English she was supposed to be made fun of. That's what many housewives in India go through. Their own families think "You don't know anything". English is just a tool to show this.

And I would be bold enough to opine that, most actresses in Bollywood today can’t even go pass the expressions bit alone, left alone other intricacies/subtleties. I barely watch movies. But I loved and would recommend it to all.

      Also she has the ability to captivate almost all the attention so far so that everyone else becomes invisible. That’s how a hero should be as in Aristotle’s Poetics. It should be as if you are as empathetic to the character as if all his/her happiness and sadness become yours too. You smile when she smiles, and you cry when she’s hurt, whatever the situation may be. Her acting is both artistically and emotionally a piece of gem. And I guess it was comeback after pretty much a decade of not acting. (Can’t speak enough)

    Even though Sridevi is not the actor who appealed to me as an audience and therefore not my favourite, I have mad respect for her as an acting professional. At the epitome of her career, she commanded respect as the female Amitabh Bachchan of India. The airplane scene is a throwback to some films they did together in their younger days, in one of which especially the audience went mad about the pairing of these two mega-stars of their time.

    Yes, there is a slight stigma attached to people who don't speak English in indian society (that too due to the British having constantly pushing this narrative of race, language and religious superiority down our throats over 150 years of British rule) but it is limited to a very few small-minded people... but Bollywood loves to over-exaggerate this garbage as they love to paint all Indians (and esp. the Hindu community) to be myopic and petty. Indian kids are specially quite respectful towards their parents in our society but this movie portrays quite the opposite.
    Personally, I still don't have a problem with their biased views but it matters to me when such views are portrayed by people overseas as the real face of our society. It is absolutely wrong. Every society has a few bad apples and so does our.

      British Governer actually banned our very own education sytem that time plus scraped out all bokks everything which were in Hindi, Sanskrit or regional script calling them all low class & nowhere at standard of even primary school books in britain in terms of knowledge, As During Industrial revolution they wanted workers who know computer, some math, science & can converse with them in their language Instead of Britishers learning ours..So they Established a whole new education system from root, Opening christain, convent, english medium schools with giving more emphasis on subjects like english literacture, european version of science, maths, computer while also made stature of Arts field subjects as low coz they didn't needed singers, poets, dancers, painters, designers or such While very contrary to that ancient india has always given highest place & more emphasis to artists of any kind/field and they use to possess incredibly high skills, knowledge & position in king's court or society.

    actually the fun fact is that almost 90 percent in India children go to English medium school, and its looked down upon if you go to any other language medium school.

    • @trusfratedbunny2215
      @trusfratedbunny2215 Рік тому +1

      Specially Hindi or regional medium schools which anyway not even exists in Private sector but only in government Coz Unlike other non-english foreign nations Here Private schools from the beginning run all in english medium (as running from britishers established education system & convent schools times) which they contuning till today as Non of them see or feel any benefit of having any other own language's medium school coz Majority parents in india will not let their kids go there as they see down upon on it.
