His attention to detail spanned to training of employees as well. We turned out quality work because of it. I am mechanically inclined which helped a lot as I could help greatly in training new recruits as well. The pay grade also caused the revolving door of trainees there as well. Another great video, Eric. Thanks for the brake update on Mrs. O's van- it's good to know that they are holding up well. I'll be looking into those for replacements on my pickup.
I live in the heat belt (Phoenix), and replaced the dealer installed, 1 year old brakes with these on my 2013 F-150 about a year ago. Old rotors were warped, and these have been "smooth as butter" ever since they went in.
@@jimrodgers3684 Glad to hear it. I have a '14 Ram 1500 w/75k on it and my rotors are warped bad. I was waiting for an update from Eric to see if they were worth it- sounds like they are!
Good job, Eric. I probably would not have thought of getting the entire filter assy for the gasket - I guess that's one point for plastics - buying an entire aluminum housing would have probably been expensive. I'm sorta losing my love for o-rings - seen too many flatten out. If it had been a gasket, you coulda made one!
It could be that oil pump pressure relief valve was stuck on cold weather/winter temp. First thing where oil will leak to release pressure is oil filter and oil filter housing gasket. Seen few cases of these, very hard to diagnose also..
That was my big complaint about working in a local garage in the winter, and we had drive on lifts so the snow melting off the car stayed around for the full day.
Glad to see the brakes are still doing good. I think they use a zink coating on those rotors. Definitely adds money to each rotor but definitely keeps them around longer in NY.
Fluid film , yes on the inner hat touching the hub. But in between the fins and the outer hat are open to the elements which would normally rust on plain non coated rotors. I’ve even seen where these zinc coated rotors not rust on the pad surface even if they sit for weeks.
Happy New Year! Just curious about the flatness of the filter housing. My guess is that it's warped "plastic, oil, heat cycles, bad design, etc". Gotta keep the Boss happy!
I just replaced the plastic expansion tank on my bmw. It would not seal around the cap where it treads on after 11 years and 131,000 miles. Guess 2,500 heat cycles will do that to plastic.
It seems to me like you would apply a shear force to the assembly when you replace the filter which would warp the assembly and potentially cause the seal to fail. As you said, great design.
Ooh, right! I think of the number of times I have had to really torque an oil filter cap because it just decided to be stubborn. Lubrication only does so much to ward off evil spirits. To do that sideways on the housing can't be good.
I bet the rubber gasket swells as he heats up, and the plastic has to stretch a little with it each time -- and eventually the plastic work hardens and just stays stretched, and then when the rubber cools and shrinks again, it leaks; and that's why he said it doesn't leak anymore once it heats up. Watch Wes Work just did a video on a Dodge minivan with the plastic oil filter housing leaking oil too. I have to wonder if the new trend is videos about plastic parts on motors that leak oil.
My daughter had an oil change done at Walmart. Afterwards, it had quite a leak. She then made a 800 mile trip for a visit, where I checked it out. The drain plug was loose, and the oil filler cap fell off. The cap was resting on the engine, so I reinstalled it, and tightened the plug. The engine was 3.5 quarts low on oil. Happy New Year to you and your family, looks like a Chrysler engineer made his way to Kia and added some of his design prowess to that oil filter housing😂 . Have a good day!!
Yeah, was thinking that myself, Scotty says "Kias are Crap" but I've owned four including the 2015 Optima SX Turbo I drive now and NO problems but lots of recalls. Kia has given me "lifetime warranty" on the engines of the Turbo and my wife's 2013 Optima that has only 40,000 miles on it. Scotty does too much yelling and hand waving.............he is difficult to understand, quite watching him.
That looks like a German car design haha. I bet it was a combination of the gasket hardening from heat cycles, and the plastic housing warping. I've seen that kind of thing on VWs and BMWs. Probably a good thing you replaced the whole housing.
The leak I'm aware of is the 3.6 Chrysler V6 with the oil cooler that is part plastic that sits under the intake between both banks, those are notorious for leaking, but not difficult to replace, just need to remove the cover, the manifold etc just to get to it. Watch Wes Work did one last week.
Makes me happy when I own the same kind of car as the mechanics wife -- means it doesn't break down since he won't want to work on it after hours. Also, I had the oil pressure switch failure. +1 to Kia for having the warranty extended.
Nothing like plastic filter housing. I'm guessing that plastic might have warped as well. Getting hot to cold numerous times. Then you got the metal on the engine expanding and contracting as well. Now throw in the oring.
Eric mentioned every accident his wife had in that van except one: He made a video with him and his wife and apparently she ran over a sign at Walmart. It got caught under the van and some mechanics from the auto service department had to come, jack the van up, and pull the sign out. That oil filter housing is plastic. Great video!
Eric, there’s also a TSB or recall type document going on with certain KIA v-6’s, concerning the oil pressure sensor/switch that resides under the intake in the V of the engine. Often it gets misdiagnosed as a rear main due to how the oil flows from the switch. Also this failure scenario has also caused oil to be pushed between the insulation and wire at the connection of the sensor, which often pushes the oil up and to a group of two or three solenoids that are mounted over the front valve cover/serpentine belt area. Oil will drip down onto the belt and other parts and oil will get spread everywhere.
Thanks for the update on the brake package. Definitely a testament in their favor surviving the PR of the NY. I've seen it mentioned in other comments, so I figure we all agree it must be the rotational forces applied to the filter housing that lie perpendicular to the mating surface and fasteners that cause the plastic to deform. It just doesn't structurally sound to begin with. Advice: Either stop changing the oil, or go ahead and buy another housing while they're available!
Your lady gets unlimited lifetime warranty, no questions asked.

I worked at a Jiffy-Lube in Brantford, Ontario Canada for 5 years over 25 years ago in my early 20's. The franchise owner was a Welshman who was the most particular man I've ever met about everything. Our shop was literally cleaner from the storage loft to the compressor room to the floors at the bottom of the pits than any restaurant kitchen!! IMMACULATE! His attention to detail spanned to training of employees as well. We turned out quality work because of it. I am mechanically inclined which helped a lot as I could help greatly in training new recruits as well. The pay grade also caused the revolving door of trainees there as well. It was the reason I left for greener pastures as well. I know fast lube places can be sketchy these days and I don't even want to think about it as vehicles have become increasingly hard to service as well.....I guess I can say I proudly that I worked at a Jiffy-Lube location which was one in a million...:) Keep up the great repair work sir!
Love it, torque is Fig Newtons. 😃
“Man down!” - Love this channel! Still the best channel on UA-cam after all these years!
After seeing the setup on the filter housing my question would be , why wouldn't it leak!
Yeah.. They should have just made the engine block plastic too; probably could have saved 27 cents.
I would rather see a spin on filter than this cartridge style I’ve got a 2022 Tucson Hybrid I bought a new filter canister I set it up with a new cartridge saves time
Does Dorkman make an aftermarket aluminum engine oil housing? They do for those Fiat/Chrysler engines.
Kia's are junk.
... a 2019 needs this much maintenance, I would drive it to the junk yard.
Eric, I am sure you've heard it before, when Mommas not happy, nobody is happy. Good work
Great job keeping Mrs. O happy, just as she prepares a gourmet lunch for you each day to keep you happy. Any problems with the back sides of the intake valves gunking up with that GDI engine. Great view of one of the few NY State vehicles with a rust free bottom side.

Another great video, Eric. Thanks for the brake update on Mrs. O's van- it's good to know that they are holding up well. I'll be looking into those for replacements on my pickup.
He didnt say what kind of brakes they were any idea? I cant remember its been a while since that install video.

I remember decades ago manufacturers touted the new spin on oil filters. Less mess than replacing cartridges. What's old is new again. Thanks.
It could be that oil pump pressure relief valve was stuck on cold weather/winter temp. First thing where oil will leak to release pressure is oil filter and oil filter housing gasket. Seen few cases of these, very hard to diagnose also..
i like how you showcased that dewalt ratchet. My dad got me that for christmas and i really like it
You can really see how much force is twisting on those mounting bolts when you tighten the oil filter housing cap.
The constant dripping water is what made this especially fun.
That was my big complaint about working in a local garage in the winter, and we had drive on lifts so the snow melting off the car stayed around for the full day.
Thanks for the update on the power stop brakes, been using them for years and and love them.
Great video of a husband taking care of is wife and family.Good job Eric O. as always you never let us down.
Glad to see the brakes are still doing good. I think they use a zink coating on those rotors. Definitely adds money to each rotor but definitely keeps them around longer in NY.
The "zink" coating ( actually zinc...with a "c"... and more commonly known as "galvanized") does work quite well.
Hmm, wasn't it fluidfilm that did the trick?
Fluid film , yes on the inner hat touching the hub. But in between the fins and the outer hat are open to the elements which would normally rust on plain non coated rotors. I’ve even seen where these zinc coated rotors not rust on the pad surface even if they sit for weeks.
glad to see Mrs O knows a good mechanic....
Hey Eric good job on taking care of the # 1 customer. Wondering if the plastic oil housing mated to aluminum might experience warpage on extreme cold?
That sure sounds like a real BEAST!! Good way to stay on the wife's good side. You're a wise man Eric.
The first time seeing an electric ratchet on the channel. Welcome Sir, welcome.
You didn't up sale her an air and cabin filter.
Just for giggles...run a straight edge over the housing surface to check for uneven molding...
I’ve got a 2022 Tucson I don’t like the cartridge filter
I bet the rubber gasket swells as he heats up, and the plastic has to stretch a little with it each time -- and eventually the plastic work hardens and just stays stretched, and then when the rubber cools and shrinks again, it leaks; and that's why he said it doesn't leak anymore once it heats up. So buying the housing was the right move; I'm sure it's distorted and not even flat anymore. Why you would bolt plastic to a hot block with boiling hot oil blasting through it? I don't have a clue.
@@calholli so it has to be replaced😏. That's why all manufacturers are using plastics for engine parts😠🇬🇧🇬🇧
@@calholli My 2005 Cavalier has the oil filter housing on the right side of the Engine (Yes a plastic cup near a hot engine) and you have to use a 32 socket with an extension just to open it to change the filter. eventually it did started leaking oil once it started hitting over 130k miles (225,000 KMS) and had to change the housing and gaskets It made it's last journey July 3rd 2022 when my tire blew out and crashed into a light post and into a grassy median on the highway (I bought used tires because i was broke and needed new tires to hold me over but didn't check the DOT on the tires they were probably Old tires because the tread was 60% front and 50% in the rear)
The day is complete, The lovely Mrs.O. Hi Mrs. O.
Great video, be careful that this vehicle isn't a come back because sh knows where you live 😁
Once the oil level was proper, the check engine light went off. No issues on the return trip
Miraculous that it made it 80 miles at all. I nearly killed an engine driving it a half hour with the oil cap loose.

We used to have auto service at our Walmart; good place to find cheap tires! Then they built a SUPER WALMART, and the auto service dept. was gone! The only thing my wife didnt like about the brakes was the noise the slots in the rotors generated under hard braking. She asked me "Whats that?" I told her its' nothing to worry about Hon. She passed last February. It always reminds me of her when I have to brake hard. :}
Funny how little things can hit us with memories of people we knew or loved.
Happy New Year to you and your family, looks like a Chrysler engineer made his way to Kia and added some of his design prowess to that oil filter housing😂 . Have a good day!!
Amazing that Mrs. O was able to get in so quickly with your busy workload....Must of had a cancellation or something! Love the videos, thank you both.

Don't let Scotty know that Mrs. O is driving a Kia.
I sent Scotty a plastic crab for Xmas

Hope you and your family have a great day. Stay warm my friend.
This only further proves: the customer is ALWAYS right, and some customers more so than others 🤣

New way to rip off customers. Don't keep gaskets. Sell the whole unit with gasket. No warranty to worry about either.
Good job, Mr. O. Got to keep momma happy. If momma isn't happy, nobody is happy!
Mr O,
I thought the all time worst design was the Chrysler V6 oil filter placement! 😂
Leaks into the valley
Make sure Mrs. O is happy that's what matters good job Sir.
Want some FUN in your life...??!!!... Change out the Alternator on one of these....You will love urself afterwards....
Did she have to write her own invoice? 😂
I get the pleasure of doing this on our 2019 sorento when my part gets in this week.
That's not an oil leak, it's the Kia Auto-Fluid Film option!
This reminds me of swapping out a leaking oil cooler gasket on my 4.6 Mustang GT on my back. Busted knuckles and many colorful words in the garage!
Good stuff. Aftermarket is a gamble.

I wish you, Mrs. O and the KIA a very healthy and prosperous 2023.
Another video showing the benefits of Fluid Film! Frame looks awesome.
If we can't do it , we watch you do it 🤙😉
Eric, there’s also a TSB or recall type document going on with certain KIA v-6’s, concerning the oil pressure sensor/switch that resides under the intake in the V of the engine.
Can't belive u bought a Kia! That thing sounds like a combine!
