Excellent video! I was one of two Amtrak mechanics honored with the opportunity to ride for the last time. Lots of blood, sweat and tears went into keeping these on the rails over the years.
That is such a beautiful train with character to the passenger cars design. I am saddened by the fact that it will be scrapped and I am glad to be able to see it in this stunning video.
Atleast they get to run through some beautiful turf before being retired. Thank you again Dan from another OR railfan, hwy 58 has been my latest line of exploration over the last few years. Working out at Crescent Lake made that all the more a wonderful experience. I've rode out on these guys a few times too, great rides and always a pleasure to see on a bridge in my opinion 😀
Nice video Dan! Interesting train sets. I had to do some Googling to see what the actual train sets looked like when they were in service. Thank you for following this train through Willamette Valley and up into the Cascade Mountains. That was beautiful scenery along the way.
WOW, what an incredibly beautify video. Great photography, appropriate music score, fantastic scenery. Great tribute. Awesome job getting this done, Academy Award Nomination (if there is one for this category.)
There go 2 Talgo Series VI trainsets on Amtrak #865. Farewell! I like the Talgo Series VI trainsets more than the Talgo Series VIII. Gonna miss seeing them at Vancouver Pacific Central Station, which is also the terminus of VIA Rail.
Another wonderful video Dan! You're amazing! I just wonder what company paid them off to scrap them. It was foolish to even entertain the Point Defiance Cutoff! Fools. It will be a very long time before I patronize Amtrak Cascades. Crazy bureucrats.
Railroads dropping the ball again. How many homeless people out there? These cars can be converted into livable dwellings for them. Just like all the cabooses that have been scraped in the past, along with other equipment. They even had kitchenettes, bathrooms and sleeping berths. Does anyone know if any railroads have done anything like that at any time? Besides giving a ride to a hobo, every now and then. Dan, Beautiful train, beautiful scenery, great video. Hopefully there's more beautiful giving, helpful people out there.
Such a beautiful train. Sad they are scrapping it. I love your transitions and lower thirds text addiitions and titles. What software are you using to do your editing? Personally, I love DaVinci Resolve Studio.
I loved those passenger trains. They will be missed. Is Amtrak in the west coast now only Coast Starlight or does Cascades have a replacement? Wish the Talgo 6 series didn’t have to be crushed.
It wasn't that Washington State thought them unsafe (remember they're also owned by ODOT), it's that they don't meet current FRA crash standards, as evidenced in the Nisqually wreck. They really aren't "unsafe" as long as the engineer doesn't try to take a 30 mph curve at 80.
This was a severalfold purchase. Of the original 4, two were owned by amtrak and 2 by WSDOT. The state of OR was required to contribute 2 sets to bring the fleet to 6. Then there was the failed Las Vegas talgo that was purchased by WSDOT to add to the fleet. This made the fleet 3 WSDOT, 2 Amtrak. Oregon owns the remaining 2 series 8 to the Cascades service. We can only hope to see what we get now. Its still possible that WSDOT could purchase the 2 series 8 in storage for the failed Wisconsin service.
The rear trainset was the Mt. Hood. Do you what the lead trainset was? I've seen both Mt Baker and Mt Olympus listed on other places, but no one has been able to confirm.
The Talgo cars are much shorter in height to the GE locomotives and the Cabbages they used. So that there was a smooth line from the height of the locomotive to the height of the Talgo cars.
Great air photography, just curious why the Talgo trainsets were transported in their own train rather than on a freight train since there being scraped? Just a different opinion, I never liked Talgo trainsets since they were weird and looked flimsy for American railroading.
The talgo trains were built using tilt train technology. They were tested and rated for 110mph. Since they were moved by amtrak rather than UP or BNSF, they were ale to be moved at passenger speed rather than freight.
Amtrak was paid $29,000 by the scrapper which then had to pay Amtrak for the trek down to LA. The owner of the scrapper rode the train from one end to the other.
They are replaced by Talgo train sets that have harder seats. Gone are the well cushioned leather seats, replaced with thinner fabric covered seats. I visited the new set at Portland Union station at an open house.
@@jimesser477 The new train sets don't have the fins. Instead they replaced the Cabbage with one that I believe was designed by Talgo, that is taller at the front where the cab is, and looks like an ugly duck face.
Watch what you say about that engineer. He's a friend of mine as well as many others of the Pacific Northwest railfan community. Really good guy and unfortunate situation.
I don't blame the engineer all that much, and good for you, Dan to stand up for him. It was a lack of training that was the prime cause of that crash, coupled with a lack of automatic train control, which was promised but not done by the time of the crash. 80 mph into a 30 mph curve will not end well for sure.
Washington state blames the cars for the accident did they forget that the engineer was speeding which caused the wreck these still had plenty of life left think Washington state is a joke they like blaming things that don't talk for things like the train derailment the engineer is the real cause of the accident.

So sad that this beautiful train is going to the scrap yard.
Sad indeed...
What train is safe when you try to run it at 85 MPH through a 30 MPH curve???
I dont get why they would scrap these because of a operator error, the train did not fall off the tracks, the engineer drove it off.
Wonderful image! This Chanel is the best, ever. Congratulations, Dan!
Thank you!
Sad to see them go, but this sure captures them beautifully.

Cool! This line is like my backyard since I live in Eugene. I've got lots of videos featuring locations along here.
Thank you for sharing some of that most wonderful footage, of at least my favorite section of Willamette pass
So glad to have captured it through there before it got too dark!

Wonderful video Dan. You never fail to amaze with your brilliant content!
Awesome video of a sad occasion. Thanks for sharing Dan! Wish I could have been there with you.
I wish you could have been right by my side! Might have cried!
I know I would have cried. This whole thing was a lot of bad judgement calls

Right now they're using Horizon cars in the interim. I believe replacement cars by Siemens will be on the way.
@@TheRailfanDan Okay, thanks. If it weren’t for the derailment accident in 2017, they’d still be around. I wish it never happened. 😔

Mt Baker and Mt Olympus are the trainsets (0:59) If you watch "FAREWELL TALGO" Chehalis, WA February 28, 2021 on the Virtual Railfan channel (1:04)
Any idea on what's replacing them?
Other talgo series trainsets someday. Right now they're being substituted with horizon cars.
@@TheRailfanDan Understable, at least the Talgo sets aren't gone altogether
Why was it deemed unsafe after one derailment?
You must have hustled to keep up with it. Are those 'wings' just visual features?
Yes, to match the locomotives/ cab cars on the ends
The Talgo cars are much shorter in height to the GE locomotives and the Cabbages they used. So that there was a smooth line from the height of the locomotive to the height of the Talgo cars.

UA-cam needs a sad emoji instead of just up or down.
The funny thing is that the people who declared to get rid of the Spanish talgos are major Karen’s and chads
AS ALWATS, DAN ... TERRIFIC VIDEO ...
Thank you!
Well this just made me sad
ouch, yupee put a manifest in

One bad decision by a poorly trained engineer caused these beautiful train cars to be scrapped. What a shame!
