Maruoka Castle is a Hirayama Castle(Castle on a hill in the plains) in Maruoka Town, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, is also known as Kasumiga Castle.
It is one of Japan's existing castle tower 12 and is the only castle in the Hokuriku region.
In the 4th year of Tensho (1576 AD),Shibata Katsutoyo, the nephew of Shibata Katsuie, the vassal of Oda Nobunaga, built a castle.
It was designated as a national treasure in 1934 (1934 AD).
Maruoka Castle collapsed due to the Fukui Earthquake in 1948 (1948 AD).
It was designated as an important cultural property in 1950 (1950 AD) and was repaired and restored in 1955 in 1955.
Currently, only the castle tower remains.
In the past, it was a splendid castle with Honmaru and Ninomaru, surrounding the surroundings with moat.
The roof tiles used for the roof of the castle are made of local Syakudani stone (tuff) in Fukui Prefecture.
There was an explanation that the stone made shachi (killer whale) exhibited outside the castle was made of Syakudani stone, just like tiles.

丸岡城は、別名霞ヶ城と言われ、福井県坂井市丸岡町にある平山城です。
日本の現存天守１２の一つで、北陸地方では唯一の城です。
天正４年(西暦 １５７６)に織田信長の家臣である柴田勝家の甥である柴田勝豊が築城しました。
昭和９年(西暦 １９３４)に国宝に指定されています。
昭和２３年(西暦 １９４８)の福井大震災で倒壊しました。
昭和２５年(西暦 １９５０)に重要文化財に指定されて、昭和３０年(西暦 １９５５)に修理復元されたそうです。
現在は、天守閣しか残っていませんが、かつては本丸、二の丸などを配置し、周りを濠で囲った立派な城郭でした。
城の屋根に使われている瓦は、福井県の地元の笏谷石(凝灰岩)を使っているそうです。
城外に展示している「石製しゃち(鯱)」も瓦と同じく笏谷石で造られていると説明書きがありました。
