As a former English colony the US did inherit the formal style and had it for a long time among the middle and upper classes of society. I think things changed in the later half of the 20th century.
Because he’s a British guy in America… a British guy in the Uk; gets no play. Style may have a small part… but it was literally just him being a foreigner. Thats EASY game
Reminds me of the guy from Love Actually who can't get lucky in London but as soon as he goes to the US three hot women are throwing themselves at him. In some countries an accent from the US is sexy.
Yep, I’m a Boston boy who moved down to Memphis and did quite well chick wise just based on my accent. Although being a muscular 6’2” probably didn’t hurt.
Nonsense .....British military men , especially the officers have a certain level of dress ,and standards , coming via their level of education . Its the class system , bringing a level of confidence . I have seen it first hand , with a family member . Best tailored suits , clothing , confidence , and knowing you are the best of the best , in terms of training, militarily and education . The class system is alive and well in the u.k . Add that to his accent Ask anyone who has trained alongside the elite British military regiments ,and they will tell you .
This myth is often perpetuated. I’m an ex military Englishman. We learned how to dress while serving, if we didn’t know before. Take a walk around the average British town, and you will see a lack of style and class is pervasive. The average British man will leave the house wearing athleisure, as I’m sure you’ve seen in the USA too. Stay classy gentlemen. Dressing well shows a level of self respect. When you respect yourself, you can respect others, and we all benefit from a nicer society as a result.
What you need to understand is that the average English guy is not stylish. This entirely depends on demographics. In affluent areas of course you’ll see in general many more stylishly dressed guys than in poorer areas but of course this applies to most if not all countries. On average the English are not known for looking smart but often the movies represent a very one sided view of reality. No surprise there 😊
Yep and this guy was an officer which is a minority within a minority (the services) within Britain. Quite possibly got trained to be a gentleman at A public school and at Sandhurst.
These men have one thing in common: they are extremely wealthy, and can afford to buy bespoke and tailored clothing. They also have stylists to help them with putting together outfits. And people to take care of the extensive maintenance that goes with this type of clothing. They're not ironing their own shirts, shining their own shoes, taking things to the dry cleaner etc.
not sure it's possible to disagree more, I know firsthand it's easy to look good with minimal expense and there are plenty of resources to learn without resorting to stylists.
Why was the exchange officer popular with the ladies? My guess is it had nothing to do with how he dressed and everything to do with his accent and how he talked to them.
A significant factor is that fashion is a way to set oneself apart from the rest. That makes sense in English culture prior to the "modern audience". Class was/is everything in that culture. American culture is much more egalitarian. The fashion in the US is understatement: t-shirt, jeans, boots/sneakers. The wealthy in the US tend to underdress instead of showing off their wealth, with notable exceptions of course. Tech moguls in the US use fashion to say, "I'm not so different from you." English style prior to the 2000s is intended to say, "Yes, I am different from you."
And yet those tech guys wear t-shirts of 500-1000 dollar. Also you had the preppy style which took things from the UK country style. It went wrong somewhere between the 2000's and now.
In Europe, British men (I am English) are stereotyped as being beer swilling, overweight drunkards usually dressed very badly...football shirts over the beer gut, socks and sandals, covered in tattoos etc...I know that not all of us are like that but I think that the Southern Europeans are generally far more stylish.
True. In the 1930s the British men were very elegant, but this time is over. Therefore I love to watch films situated in Britain in the 1930s ("Gosford Park", "Rebecca") or made in the 1930s. Greetings from Germany
As an Englishman I have to say that the propaganda has worked. Sadly the truth is the average Englishman dresses like a slob. We used to have great shops like Burtons, Debenhams, C&A, where you could get a good suit and quality clothes at a decent price. Now all we have is marks and Spencer who basically make clothes for grandads...I bought an m&s suit last year because I had to have a new suit quickly, and it's fine, I can dress off the peg and look good, the cut of this suit is all.wrong but I adjusted it. I work for a funeral director and I am shocked at the fact that many brits don't even own a pair of trousers, let alone a suit...but Antonio please keep telling us we look great!
@@garypointing5825 I agree with your general comments. Try the Autograph range for a more modern silhouette. M&S used to be exactly what you described but worked hard in recent years to shed that image. They’ve tailored an England Football Team range and had the likes of David Gandy and Take That wearing their clothes in an attempt to modernise.
Really interesting video, love the historical elements. As a Brit, we have a different international reputation nowadays I believe, but go to the right places and you'll absolutely still see English style. I think the two biggest reasons are; 1- weather. We have a very varied climate in a small geographical area which changes regularly, but doesn't have extremes (deserts, tornadoes, monsoon rain, etc). And 2- our class system, which still affects clothing choices (amongst other things) today. Dressing "better" sets you apart not just in style, but in perceived societal importance.
This probably explains what I call "hybrid dressing" which seems to be a modern phenomenon over here. I see it so often. It's basically where a man wears a sweater/jumper/hoodie/outer layer on their top half and pairs it with shorts, as if they've kind of dressed for four seasons at once. Given our weather, that's probably not the worst idea in the world as we often experience four seasons in one day.
As a young U.S. Army lieutenant I attended a military ball when a British Army officer walked in. He sucked the style oxygen out of the room. When I got the chance to mingle with this officer, I complimented his uniform. He thanked me as he explained the traditions associated with his immaculate outfit. I will never forget what he said to me. “We Brit’s have traditions. You Americans tend to have habits.” I always looked out for British style after that.
‘A prophet has no honour in his own land’ The reason he was picking up the best women was likely the gimmick of his accent, i’m a Scotsman who would struggle to pick up an average woman here yet in the US the women were all over me😂

What you see in films is the exception, rather than the rule. There's also the socio-economic considerations as well - A decent suit is expensive for a lot of people (particularly in these times) and although you can buy an off-the-rack suit a bit cheaper, it just isn't a look anymore.

But, if blending in and being uninspired and average, good for you(?)
Ok, ironing your clothes takes a little bit of time. But dressing well? No! Putting on real trousers doesn't take longer than ripped jeans. And a jacket is a jacket. Suit jacket or sportscoat doesn't take longer than any other. Baseball cap vs. proper hat? Same time. If you have 30 seconds left, you can put on a tie. Always worth the "tremendous effort!" Spend a few bucks? If you buy second hand, it even is a lot cheaper to buy real clothes vs. "trendy" athleisure pieces.

If only that were true! As an Englishmen I don't think we are any more stylish than Americans, Australians or any else. Your English Military colleague clearly had money, good taste, manners and good banter. All dynamite with women wherever your are. Many officers in the UK come from expensive schools and dressing well is second nature by the time they leave. They can also afford to which is an important point. However anyone who joins the military, whether Officer or Enlisted, gets taught how to correctly wear uniform and they get taught to pay attention to detail. That alone can set someone apart in todays world. I'm sure you, as a well dressed American would do equally well in a bar over here.
When it comes to how people dress in other counties like England and Italy I think we have a romanticized vision of what they wear. When the reality of it is that while yes, there are those who dress exceedingly well, there are many that don't. This is something you can find here as well. In England, Italy, The United States, and just about any country there are those who are stylish and those who are not.
Historically the English used to be stylish maybe but dress-down culture is everywhere now and people in England don't even make an effort when going out. All the adults looks like overgrown kids... Even when wedding invitations go out they need to say NO T-shirts, tracksuits or jeans.. and yes that's a thing!
I would echo some of the other Brits on here in saying that the abundance of athleisure wearers on British streets is a sad development. However, there does seem to be a resurgence of interest in classic style more recently, and those who are doing it, do appear to be doing it with a reasonable amount of style and panache. Also, can confirm that a British accent, and a tasteful outfit, has gotten me laid in foreign countries on a number of occasions. 😂

Its definitely because he was foreign. When I was single and traveling I always did better than back at home. It was just the boots, hat, and accent.
I had a Londoner friend there and I got far more compliments on style than he did.
Love this history! 👍

Barry, 63 says otherwise.
Have you seen the chavs?
Believe me, they’re anything but stylish!
Should a trench coat be just above the knee or just below it?
I don't think it matters and I'd say it's really up to the person wearing it. I myself prefer something that goes down to my feet because I like that look. Other people prefer something that is higher up. It's all a matter of personal preference.
Americans thinking their, Irish, Scottish, African???..... if you were born in America.... guess what,.... your American!!... you don't hear British people saying,.... im a Roman, Viking, Saxon English!!!😂😂
Real Men Styles: "Seriously, who is ridding into battle with a full-on-hard on that needs to be protected?"
Dan Daly has entered the chat.
“Who’s riding into battle with a hard-on?” Most un-marine thing I’ve ever heard 😈
Are they? Well, some I guess... Like everywhere else.

I'm a simple man. I see Henry Cavill in the thumbnail, and I click 😅
It's the accent, let's not kid ourselves 💂♂️
Good video but I should point out the Sean Connery was Scottish; not English.
Its a stereotype.
Sean Connery was Scottish 🏴🙂
Why is Henry Cavill's picture here? He's Australian.
Not sure the Brits are really very stylish, it is more of a stuffy look. The Italians know fashion the best.
Sean Connery nor Henry Cavill are Englishmen.
Maybe he should have titled it Why Are British Men So Damn Stylish. Would that make you happy?
But the channel islands are english so Cavill is

Not really, the examples in this video are the elite of society through the ages, working class English the other hand have always been poor, not stylish and yes, bad teeth.
If twin pregnant male belly shirtless in the supermarket is stylish... 😬😬
Second best are the white socks + black sandals. This is 80% of the masculine gender... 😬
Beaten up old faded t-shirt + cargo shorts is already average.

YOU BASE STYLE ON THE BRITS, ELETISTS AND SNOBS?
It is not a question of nationality but of social class of origin and/or the social class in which you move.
