SA's gen z is cool af. They're literally the gen z in the ads you see. They're colourful, they're fashion-forward, tech-savvy. There's such a massive gap in mentality between kids born in the 90s and 2000s

Coming to SA soon and I have a question about the Pretoria story. Is it difficult to get an uber in Pretoria? Is it a matter of numbers or something else? Thanks

    • @AntonsClass

It was a bit difficult for us, yes. I'm not sure why, tbh. We tried in various places and had some trouble.

I live in Pretoria i have never had any problem with requesting Uber at any time, unless you request by the Gautrain Station i know meter Taxis won't allow them to pick you up from Pick-up spot. If thats the case then you can leave a voice note of where they can pick you up away from the station.

I hope this was just a quiet day, because both places look a bit "dead" to me. Maybe they liven up at night or something? Could be that both are aimed at foreign tourists, rather than locals, and foreign tourism still hasn't recovered from COVID. A pity, since it all looks quite brand new and shiny (with attention to details like gardens, even), so depending on the private/public sector mix in funding, quite a lot of money that's gone into these projects. I'd guess the money was already committed by the time COVID arrived.
So you're helping a lot by making the places known. Maybe it'll bring a few more of those tourists. (Although I suppose the more sociable/ those who like the hubbub of a busy crowd are probably going to enjoy Egypt better, at the moment, and might be put off by the quietness of it all.)
Looks like there might be a market for a tourism route that takes people through a South Africa, in which it's possible to pretend there are no more white people in the world, just lots of "melanin" (I don't really get the point of encoding that?). Business opportunity awaits. BBBEE candidates only.
I'm not casting aspersions, just spotting opportunities. For every traveller who enjoys just not feeling like a minority-outsider in the place he's visiting (without any ill feelings toward the "insiders" back home) there another one who might like the feeling so much that he'd pay good dollars to have it amplified to the max. (Again, no need for any negative intent here. It's just nice to feel like you "belong" - as long as we all take good care to remember that we belong to species Homo first, and not to one of the current temporary variants of the species - or as a good friend of mine who decided he'd lived enough and left the planet voluntarily one day would put it, the real rule is just: "Don't be a Count". A Count of some country. I think Ricky Gervais had a similar rule? Maybe my late friend stole it from him.)
OK, so with all that treading on eggs done with, why not? Why not set up a South African tour in which things are arranged so that the visitor always feels like the whole world is full of just people who look "black" like him? It wouldn't be entirely possible (without doing terrible things to the white people at airports, for instance - which is not the idea here), but by choosing marginal rural areas (which could do with the tourism dollars more than the economic hub of the country needs them), your visitor could enjoy the pleasure of being in the majority for a change, for most of the trip.
Kind of like how white South Africans might enjoy being a nicely anonymous part of the majority when travelling to Europe, if they paused to think of something like that - which I'm pretty sure almost all of them have done, at least when it was enough of a novelty to be strange. There's always a bit of instinctive vulnerability that goes with being the odd one out in any situation. You get used to it, but it's nice when it lifts.
