Jonas Kaufmann sings "La Donna e Mobile" at the Classical Brit Awards, programme dated 19th May 2009. This is produced solely to promote Jonas and his music.
I love this guys voice.. its larger and darker, than the typical tenor voice, and he has real dynamic control over it, with real decrescendos... and crescendos.. Fabulous.. ringing top notes too.
One cannot but admire Kaufmann. Whatever he sings he sings beautifully. He can do Wagner, verdi, Puccini, Mahler, Strauss...just to name but a few. His voice and expresson changes with the styles . It is foolish to deny that and we should be grateful for his versatility and his courage to try. Well done!
He's got the most "virile" sound among the current tenors and has an incredible technique and musicianship. Some people find his voice too dark or things like that, but I am definitely very happy we have such a great dark tenor voice, able to sing a huge repertoire from Mozart to Wagner. Bravo!
Show me a tenor who has gotten this much of what Verdi put into this aria and done it so well. He's actually gotten me to love this aria again. He nails it to the wall and makes it his own, like just about everything else he takes on.

Anyone else see Jose Carreras in the audience at 2:20, clapping and saying, "Bravo?" Carreras was my favorite tenor for a long while. But ever since I heard Jonas Kaufmann sing, I must confess that he is now not only my new favorite, but possibly the best tenor I have ever heard in my lifetime.

Just a note to people who are still skeptical about him, Kaufmann has been singing like this since the early 2000's and he's not only vocally healthy but seems to be improving with every performance. There's even evidence on youtube of his full command of Mezza Di Voce at the end of Cielo E Mar.

Benché il timbro vocale ricorda più quello di un ottimo tenore drammatico, devo ammettere prestarsi benissimo ad un ruolo più leggero come il Duca di Mantova del Rigoletto. I love Kaufmann's singing, but I think he's more suited to heavier Verdi than this. But why do people complain about 'darkness' and 'improper technique?' His voice is naturally dark, and his technique has been working just fine for many years. If you don't like the sound, ok, that's a valid opinion, but to say he doesn't know what he's doing is just ridiculous.
There's nothing wrong with him sounding a little dark. A lot of tenors tend to sound too high and then it becomes kind of tiring. Kaufmann knows what he's doing. :D
@Dave Glo Absolutely agree. Some people say he is a baritone that can sing high. Not at all. The definition of a baritone vs. that of a tenor is not by the timbre of a voice but by the range of notes they sing in their performance. Naturally, most baritone voices are dark and most tenor voices are bright, but there are always exceptions. Some baritones are brighter than Kaufmann but they are not tenors. Kaufmann's voice is unique, and I enjoy his rendition of music just as I enjoy other tenors' and baritones'.

I don't know how anyone can listen to this and not think it's amazing... a completely unique and powerful voice, consistant and beautiful throughout the entire range. Isn't that what you are supposed to do as a singer? If he looked like Pee Wee Herman I would still listen to this guy.

Es un Tenor de los mejores, no se habia escuchado una voz como la de Kaufmann hacia ya ratos, es un voz dramatica con exelentes agudos. no muy buenas coloraturas pero sobresale de la Orquesta!
Fantastically well singing. What makes Kaufman a little extra interesting is that he not sings with the classic tenor voice (the tenor timbre). Kaufman is among the "Great Masters".
Amiga, espero que hayas escuchado a los tenores de antaño. Al menos, a algunos como Di Stefano, Kraus, Wunderlich, Tucker, Corelli, etc. Este señor está demasiado sobrevalorado. Para empezar, no logra impostar correctamente la voz. Él era un lírico ligero natural, pero ahora trata de ser una especie de tenor dramático o heróico que suena desagradable, nada natural.

Does he really sound that much different from a Vickers or Corelli. When they sang with Tito Gobbi, Gobbi's was definitely the slenderer voice.
