  • Live performance of an in-game song from the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System 8-bit) game "The Immortal", using two Pocket Operators PO-28 & PO-32 from Teenage Engineering.
Quickly jammed in one take so figured it would match the #jamuary2018 flow of videos :)
The game music was originally composed by Douglas Fulton for the Apple IIGS, but a number of ports were made and C64-hero Rob Hubbard arranged some of them for NES (which my version is based on).
The PO-32 takes care of the bass line and some percussion (all sounds were created in Microtonic and then transferred to the PO). The PO-28 handles live playing and background melody. PO-32 feeds 28 with sync and its audio and everything is then recorded straight from the PO-28 output. No mixing or post processing added.

Ah, noo but hey - thanks! Haven’t uploaded anything in a long time and had this massive thing planned (in my mind, that is...) that never got realized. So instead I just fooled around yesterday evening and this came out :)

That is absolutely incredible, you playing live like that! I have a few POs and I absolutely adore them, but I always record and play. Those clicky buttons are my nemesis. How many times you practice this songs before you record the videos? Those patterns look really hard.

Thanks a lot Matias! Yes, some preparing and practicing is needed - but the improvised things are always ”in the moment” so not possible to rehearse :) Some of my videos (like the latest one, on 33 and 35) took a long time to be able to do a perfect take, but that is part of the fun I think.

@@tubesockor That's awesome, congrats! I'm visiting Stockholm in April so I'm going to stock up on some of the POs I'm missing. I love those little things : )

great video bro and keep up the good work!! I am getting my first PO 32 tomorrow and cant wait to play with it on ableton after the sync fix. Which PO's are the one's to get? Because the whole 30 serie's look killer and think ill go for the po33 next.

Thank you, glad you like it! Which POs to get is a hard one to answer, since it so much depends on what you want to play and how. I’ve covered most of them in my videos here (but more will certainly follow) so take a look and see if some of them give answers your question. But 32 and 33 is a good combo. And I like the 28 for lead playing.

Sweet, thanks for the fast awnser and ill dig some deeper into the PO28 to see if worth getting.

Det här är bara så coolt. Kan man koppla dessa till en synth och få ut ljudet?

Kul att du gillar! Hur menar du med att koppla till en synth?

That doesn't sound like NES, it sounds like Rob Hubbard!
Looked it up and it seems it IS Rob Hubbard :)

Yes, exactly! ...like I wrote in the description hehe :) Actually the Genesis version of the game sounds pretty bad. Hubbard did a great job taking on the NES stuff here.

Were there any other effects used? Is the whole underlying drum pattern made solely from the robot drum kit besides the bass obviously

I wrote a few things about this in the description, but added some things just now so copying it here. Let me know if it answers your question!
