I want to thank everyone who has left such encouraging comments over the past several months, its been a while since i've uploaded due to various circumstances but seeing the amount of people that truly enjoyed what i've made so far has kept me motivated to continue. The next review video is already in the works and i'm considering trying to upload something in between that to keep the ball rolling. Just know that if you've said something nice it has left an impact on me. Thank you! Shout out to my editor mat for being great at what he does.

It is kind of fun watching Zoomers try to play Metroid it's a brutal game and I usually recommend Metroid zero but it's not as near annoying as the old Castlevania franchise especially the English version just remember if you play the third game your name better be helped me you're welcome in advance

I'll let you in on a secret. In the 80's we didn't all draw our own maps.
We used maps (or copies of maps, or polaroid's of maps) from Nintendo Power and strategy guides...
    Don't tell anyone.

Personally my recommendation is Zero Mission since it's basically an actual remake that includes some of the improvements from later games.
It's also where the modern version of the Zero Suit comes from (along with the stun pistol), and has some added content that I will not be spoiling.

Fun video. I'm 41 and always happy to get the impressions of young people with open minds playing old games. It's like getting into old movies.
Anyway first things first, don't feel bad for using rewind and know that people who have been NES purists for the last 40 years need to go the hell outside.
Second, yeah, Super Metroid is way easier to play for all the reasons stated plus there are save points and health and ammo refill points and tons of farming points. Also there are 20 health health power ups, not just the 5.
Watching through your video, it looks like you really did experience the game how it was meant to be experienced, down to having a somewhat innacurate map. Frustration, but determination. Getting the feeling of being trapped in this place. Not knowing if you found everything or what to do next and just having to figure it out. The idea that a game is supposed to be made beatable by everyone is a relatively new idea. Back then, you only beat a game if you mastered it. Mastering Metroid to the point that you got Samus dressed down was a hell of an accomplishment to hang your hat on. Samus being a woman wasn't completely unique in video game protagonists at the time (there will be no Ms. Pac Man erasure here), but it was extremely rare. Keeping the veneer of it being a secret ended up making it one of the better known facts about the NES historically, so mission accomplished.
Anyway I like your conclusions and yes, I also recommend people who like playing modern 2D games to play through this with all the support the internet can muster if they aren't up for hours of mystery. I hope you do check out Super Metroid sometime, and good video.

Glad to see younger generations exploring the classics!
Quick correction. Super Metroid is not a re-imagining. It's a proper sequel. It's actually part III of the saga. Part II was released on the Gameboy.
There is a remake/re-imagining of the original Metroid called Metroid: Zero Mission, released for the Game Boy Advance in 2004. That one has a map and a lot of quality of life changes, so you might enjoy that one more. But for us hardcore fans, nothing beats the original! :D
Still, hats off to you for playing this game all the way to the end. ;)

You're not wrong, and chat isn't wrong about the map.
The "C-Button" we used to use as kids was GRAPH PAPER.
This game was practically unplayable without it; but was only one of many, including Simon's Quest and old-school Zelda 1-2. Pretty much anything requiring memorization. At least most JRPGs included a pack-in poster version of the World Map with landmarks on it!
Making the maps was *part of the fun,* though - so you're not wrong to not want to outside-reference this.

Sooooo... I beat Metroid when I owned it back in the 80s (I am, in fact, old, and came here because I like watching young people suffer as I have suffered). No map, no guidebook. Just hours of exploring, memorizing, and note taking.
Let me just say that... NO ONE should do it the way I did. Your victory is equal to mine. If I had the tools to use save states and rewinds at the time, I totally would have, and anyone saying otherwise is lying.
Also - well done, and I'm glad you liked it. Not a lot of the games I played when I was like, twelve or whatever hold up, but this one really does. Super Metroid is the better game in a lot of ways, but this was magical.
    Now do NES Ninja Gaiden!

Good to find a fellow gamer in a similar situation. I'm on a Metroid binge myself and got to play this one a few days ago. I appreciated it's mechanical simplicity and it's surprisingly vast levels, but the lack of a map and it's notorious difficulty made it a long grind. Good luck on future playthroughs like this one.
P.S. If you haven't played Super Metroid, you need to. One of the best examples of good game design.

  • @Kevinsyel
    @Kevinsyel 5 місяців тому

yeah... I was born in 86. I played this game a lot. I beat this game as a kid, and I've beaten it several times subsequently. If I went and played this again as an adult, I would absolutely use save-states and rewind because ain't nobody got time for that.
That being said, this was one of the first games where you could go left and right, as well as up and down SEEMLESSLY (well, entering a door actually changed the scroll mode in the game code, masking the fact that you couldn't actually have full X,Y exploration) Even Kid Icarus which was build on the same engine had the first 3 levels scroll vertically, then the next 3 scroll horizontally. Metroid was a BIG deal. And I love the franchise to death.

Honestly, from my Gen Z perspective, this game is such a vibe.
Is it objectively the best game to play nowadays? No.
Does it give a feeling that I haven't felt playing another game? Absolutely.
It just evokes an almost analog horror feeling in some areas. Going straight to Norfair is such an experience. The music is some of the creepiest on the system (really only rivaled by Death Mountain from Zelda 1 and Anxiety from Castlevania 3), the dark backgrounds really give a sense of lonely dreadfulness, and getting lost enough just gives off such a sweetly uncomfortable feeling.
It feels like you're either going to be lost forever or will find... _something_ in the darkness that you'll *really* wish you hadn't found.
I'm probably the only person who likes this game more than Zero Mission, since Zero Mission is just another "pretty good Metroid game," while Metroid NES is straight up an uncomfortable (and eventually triumphant) adventure. It's like it has the hopeless atmosphere of Fusion without any of the true horror.
Also, great video! "I almost named myself Old McDonald, because I couldn't stop farming!" Absolute gold.

I'm an old guy, I can tell you my brother and I had a map, it was like a big folding color poster. I don't remember where we got it, probably a magazine. Making a map in MS Paint is hardcore, that's really cool (also the map you made is pretty damn good all things considered 👍).
Also, I use save states nowadays and would have used them back then if they were available.

I remember playing the original Metroid back in the early 90s and having several sheets of notebook paper taped together that I used to hand draw a map. Gaming was wild before the Internet. The manual also had a place to write your passwords, but that space was limited.

Zelda and Metroid were my games back then. Not using a map was a bit frustrating but the exploration was worth it. Norfair's environment was my fav but Lower Norfair scared the hell out of me. Creepy music. Plus, the enemies were faster and did lots of damage. Couldn't wait to vibe with Brinstar's heroic theme. Now, Metroid's a walk in the park. Huge nostalgia.

I struggled with this as well. I died and was lost so much as a kid. I got the game for the famicom disk system a couple of years ago and gave it another go. I grew up with both the NES and SNES, despite this, I think it's perfectly okay for people to use save states and rewinds. I also played Metroid 1 but I never drew a map I just navigated best I could. That said I also approve of using maps. (Plus I also knew the Justin Bailey code) Another early female protagonist led game you may want to try is Phantasy Star 1. It's an RPG for the Sega Mega Drive, its dungeons are even more maze like than Metroid lol.

I never used a map for this game as a kid...just explored lost until I memorized things. A tip though, near the start of the game to the right is an energy tank in the ceiling, I like to never collect that until I make the run to beat the game using the start as the spawn point, because collecting an energy tank fills your health to full, so it allows you to skip the farming for health.

Another thing to remember about these old games is that they were likely all you could play. If you got Metroid, that was it for a month or more until you or your family could afford another game. It was figure it out or go back to the Super Mario Brothers that came with the system.
All that being said, I didn't have Metroid as a kid. I played it with friends a few times, and I know I beat it at some point, but I can't tell you when or how often. I'm old enough to be an original Nintendo gamer (technically, I'm old enough to be an Intellivision gamer beforehand,) but I did better with the old Megamans and Castlevanias.

With all of the flaws that this game has, I still managed to commit this game to memory. Lmao! Made me feel I know that it's nowhere near as good as Metroid 3 and onward, but I still have a ton of nostalgia for this game

Classic Metroid did not need a map. It was simply not big enough to care about an in-game map. It was part of the experience to get lost and to memorize the important areas VS those you never visit again on your next play. That is what got us NES gamers growing into gaming. And the ability tzo memorize map sections also helped with future installments. Today you rely a bit too much on maps. Classic Metroid is memorize the areas or draw your own map.

Super Metroid is actually the second sequel to Metroid, the first sequel being on the Gameboy. So Super Metroid is Metroid 3, and Metroid Zero Mission on the Gameboy Advance is a remake of Metroid 1, but way better. Super Metroid though is very much its own game, just building off the concepts. Just so you know, thiugh, there are important story beats in Metroid 2 leading up to Super.

The quality jump between Metroid games for both Quality-of-Life and just general improvements is huge (completely understandably ofc, NES Metroid is ancient) and especially when you don't grow up on the games. I have absolutely zero idea how people did this guide-less.

  • @BillyTBum
    @BillyTBum 5 місяців тому

The original Metroid was very rough around the edges, which is sort of to be expected when you're reinventing the wheel. The copy/paste nature of the room layout was necessary to conserve space on the ROM and the ability to make a "tell" about a secret pathway suffered a lot because of it. so where Super Metroid was able to drop clues for the player, the original was mostly a game of just "bomb the shit out of everything until you find the path forward".
Also, is that a Terra notification on your stream?

As I got older I fell in love with Metroid and as an adult I tried to beat this game, and just couldn't! Don't feel bad about rewind! Plus, we, back in the 80's, cheated all the time! There was always some code we'd here about in school yard, yeah these games were so hard and it was rare when any of us ever beat one! Especially without using cheats! If we had the rewind feature, we would have used it!

-Yeah, we read those instruction manuals on the ride home. Multiple times, couldn't help it, we were excited!
-After butchering our first map, our 2nd one was better. After butchering THAT one, graph paper was a GODSEND.
-You a grown-ass adult? Use the savestates, Queen.
How deep you gonna go in this rabbit hole? Zero Mission, Metroid II (AM2r?), Super Metroid, Fusion, Dread... Prime? At very least, *Super Metroid*? Right? Right?! Right?! ::wink:: Right?

NEStroid AKA NES Metroid is fun once you finish the game and start playing it with knowing what to do. Also for me. I'm almost 40 and finished it last year as well (also I am a Metroid fan).

NES games have interesting vibes, it was an era people really didn't know what games were suppose to be, both the player and developer. People legit struggled with going left at the start of the game to get the first powerup. That sounds silly and ridiculous, but the only experience people had with platformers was mario 1 and duck hunt that came with the NES, and in mario you can't go back left. When the bar is that low, it's no wonder the game became such a hit.

    • @RottenPapi
      @RottenPapi  5 місяців тому

The going left for the power up being a new concept is not something considered!!! My older brother taught me to always do that because we played Donkey Kong and Mario together while I was growing up. That's a cool thing to point out!!

Nah, Super Metroid is just a straight-up sequel, taking place shortly after the second game on GB. It's Metroid 3. It just brings you back to the same planet as the first game, Zebes (and actually recaps the events of Metroid 2 at the beginning). That's why it can seem similar to Metroid 1.
But the *actual* remake of the first game (that most people do prefer, myself included) is Zero Mission on GBA. If you're willing to ever play it, I think you'd enjoy it a lot. It's also quite a bit easier (the easiest game in the series, in my opinion), and ties into later games with newer stuff.
But yeah, people really like the later entries like Super, Fusion, and Zero Mission (but especially Super for its atmosphere and speedrunning legacy). They're just pretty solid games.

I enjoyed the review, though. The first game can be hectic, but interesting in its own way. I still like to come back to it sometimes, and I appreciate what it did for its time. I'm glad it exists.

Zero Mission is actually the remake of Metroid NES so I highly recommend playing it. Super Metroid is straight up a sequel that happens to take place on the same planet.
I've got to give you huge credit for actually trying to beat Metroid NES. From the NES era it is the hardest game to go back to. Maybe because future Metroid games improve on the formula so much.

Congrats on clearing a "classic" game lol. I played the version in Zero Mission. I don't remember if it had save states or saving in general, but I remember not drawing a map. I'm too prideful to not try and memorize and make my own life hard. I had played Fusion and Metroid 2 ahead of time so I sorta knew to expect those farming rooms and map memorization. But still not trying to take anything away from you, I just have retro game ego/am a masochist.

Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time and I can't stand playing the original Metroid anymore. If I were to play it again, hell, yeah I would use rewind. I even use rewind when playing Super Metroid randomizations these day.
Anyway, great video! I would not wish the original Metroid on anyone, haha. It's great that you managed to stick with it and I respect your journey in to game history :)
One note, at the beginning you mention that the game "quickly made it's way into infamy" and you go on to talk about how the game was so well regarded at the time. Infamous means something that is known for being bad. I would agree that the game is infamous now, but I'm not sure if you meant it that way because it did not quickly get there.

I first played this game when you unblock it after beating Metroid Zero Mission, it was fun for the first free times, but after awhile I wanted to snap my GBA SP in half and rage wit bc I had no idea it was this rage inducing😅Thankfully I didn't and just used a chest code to finish it, and it was STILL hard, at least I finished it lol.
I recommend Zero Mission (might have to emulate it), Prime1, or Fusion. I haven't played Super Metroid or Metroid 2: Return of Samus yet, but I imagine their not as difficult as this one.

This was a phenomenal video and I found it super refreshing to see long-form, well written and equally well-researched gaming content on YT! Seems like a rarity these days, and the criticisms about the bullshit mapping system in oldschool Metroid are still valid in 2023. Fully convinced games were created in tandem with game GUIDES back then so they could squeeze more dollars out of parents. But what do I know!

I was coming in to say that. When I played this in the ‘80s as a kid, Nintendo sold strategy guides with maps, so looking it up online isn’t that far off from what we were doing.

Don’t feel bad about using saves. The original Japanese disk system version had them by default.
Passwords were a western compromise for putting it on a cartridge without a battery and a measure to ensure people wouldn’t beat it as a game rental.
That younger people are still tolerating Metroid let alone beating it is a testament to how strong the original concept is.
    Good video, subscribed.

    • @niemand7811
      @niemand7811 5 місяців тому

That thing about the game rental is a myth since not everywhere on earth you rented video games. Games were simply short and had to put up a certain level of challenge to keep you hooked. That is the only reason games were not too easy for you. Game rentals kinda warped the actual intention of video games when they were treated like your typical Saturday Night Movie.

@@niemand7811 There are examples that would disagree with you.
Battletoads, despite being developed in England, was significantly more difficult in the west than Japan.
Likewise, the original Castlevania calculated damage differently. In Japan damage was determined by enemy type, in the west the damage increased universally as you progressed.
Konami also infamously overdid it on difficulty when bringing The Adventures of Bayou Billy to the west.
It absolutely was a design consideration. The United States is the biggest video game market in the world and it isn't even close, publishers wanted their games to be sold, not rented.
