Makes perfect sense from a tactical standpoint. He is highly mobile and able to conduct special operations with his Dark Troopers. And let's not forget that for a poorly defended world even an Arquitens cruiser is a threat. This model does have turbolasers, lasers and missiles.

@MeNames PoshOpossum9484 The T-85 X-Wings of the new republic cost 220,000 credits, The T-65 X-Wing of the rebel alliance costs 140,000 credits. in these 30 years, starfighter prices have risen sharply. A B-Wing from the rebel alliance costs 220,000 credits, a resistance B-Wing may cost 260,000 or 300,000 credits. taking into account that the price of starfighters is increasing at least currently the price of starfighters has increased, do you believe that it keeps increasing?
@@TrveBlackMetal1 I think the starfighters got more expensive, because now the heroes control the government of the galaxy, maybe they have a budget to buy more expensive starfighters, remembering that the rebellion used scraps.
A good break down and reasonable explanation. Star Destroyers, though impressive and powerful, really only work if you've got the resources to stock them and clear, defined targets to throw them at. During the reign of the Emperor they were as much symbols as they were machines of war. Their appearance an unspoken but very clear message that whatever the situation was the Empire was taking a direct interest and wasn't screwing around. That alone was enough to frighten entire worlds into submission as not only could just one of those beasts take on entire fleets of less of lesser ships and bombard a planet back to the stone age, but if you challenged it more would most likely be on the way. With the Imperial government and chain of command fractured and resource chains now uncertain such juggernauts would become both impractical and expensive to field save to re-enforce already controlled assets. And as proud and arrogant as some Moffs, admirals and warlords were only the very foolish among them would risk the crown jewels of their fleets and powerbases by haughtily flying around in one. But in Gideon's case I think there's a psychological factor as well. My read of him is that he's something of a...collector of curiosities so to speak. From the Dark Saber to his folding wing TIE fighter, from his use of Dark Troopers to his hunt for Grogu, he seems to have an appreciation for the unconventional or exotic. Things that look innocuous or seem mundane yet carry great value or have surprising potency. Thus him using an Arquitens light cruiser for his personal command ship makes a level of sense as it's still in service but by then antiquated design would suit his aesthetic tastes. Yet it was also unassuming and would not tip off potential enemies as to exactly what they were dealing with. It's actually quite telling that such a high ranking Imperial official would use one speaks a great deal to his personality and mindset. After all, any ambitious brute can come stomping in riding a Star Destroyer. The one who sneaks in on a light cruiser is playing a much more subtle and higher staked game.
Allen you have Moffs and Grand Moffs confused. There were thousands of Moff's as each controlled a sector. A Grand Moff ruled over Many several sectors and had Moffs under their command, usually sectors where problems occurred.. There were only a small
As you mentioned and in the X-Wing novel series from years ago, after the death of Palpetine and the 2nd Death Star the imperial fleets increasinly fragmented as the fleets were hunted relentlessly. Showing an ISD in this era of Star Wars was a guaranteed way to attract *Everybody that dislikes you. If he does have one (Likely considering todays producers moto "Every show bigger, edgier and flashier then last time" it/they'll show when the studio wants to generate alot of Hype.
Once again, I think you've nailed it. Even if, he has one, it's unlikely he has the budget, to fully mobilize it, and most likely, uses it, as an operational in title only, STATIONARY base of operations. As it is, it may turn out to be, what you see, is actually what he's got...piddley. His apparent command ship, is exactly that, his main, indeed primary base, and source of "IMPERIAL POWER". "He can't afford a bigger boat..much less, a boathouse, to put it in".
smaller ship, smaller signature.... faster to deploy, easier to hide, and perfect for clandestine natures of missions Moff Gideon needs.... a star destroyer was the epitome of the empire saying "LOOK at me, fear me, for I have a bigger gun!" Gideon's ship using less resources and making less of an impact can navigate unhindered and also operate throughout the galaxy without drawing too much focus to their presence, and if noticed can alter its' signature ID to that of a repurposed or captured Imperial ship by smugglers or merchants... and would be a lot easier to hide in asteroid fields and such even near/behind moons in order to remain undetected....
I think an alternate theory for why Palpatine wanted the imperial remnant to self destruct is to consider that maybe he wanted the republic to achieve victory as quickly as possible so that they would be more likely to become complacent quickly so that when the first order strikes they aren't able to respond. Of course, this requires considering the 3 Disney movies as canon which I know is somewhat painful.
Wait... why the Dorito and not the Ton-Falk? Ton-Falk holds more starfighters and has better armor and point defense... Personally, I'd choose a Venator, you know, actually swarm the enemy with 100s of Ties...
I’d choose a Venator as my flagship. Venators used properly can run circles around an ISD simply because of the sheer amount of fighters that a Venator can carry. Also, Venators require MUCH LESS crew compliment to run and are cheaper. An ISD may have stronger firepower capabilities and would blister a venator in a broadside, but if you can play keep away from the ISD, its 200+ fighter compliant would make short work of an ISD. The biggest mistake the empire made was discontinuing the venators and replacing them with a ship thats extremely resource heavy to run and can carry a fraction of the fighter capacity.
A lot of people have already pointed this out, but it's quite possible that Gideon does indeed have a Star Destroyer, or maybe even a handful, but either has them in reserve due to strained supply lines or is simply holding them back as a trump card in case he really needs them. On that note, this would be an excellent place to fully bring the Victory-class Star Destroyer back into the mainstream. It's a smaller, less crew-intensive, less fuel-straining, less notable, but still powerful Star Destroyer that would make perfect sense for Gideon to have in his back pocket.
Short answer: ISDs eat up a ton of resources and manpower to operate. Even if Gideon has one he's not going to use it if he doesn't have to. His light cruiser has worked fine in situations where an ISD would have been overkill. He's fighting small bands of mercs, not going to war with the New Republic.
Moff Gideon is full of suprises. My reactions to some of his appearances were always like this: "Ah, shit, his TIE has folding wings" "Ah, shit, he has Deathtroopers now" "Oh come on, he has THE DARKSABER?!" "Oh great, he has an Arquitens now" I wouldn't honestly be suprised even if he would have an entire fleet of Super Star Destroyers
He's like trying to top off Darth Vader without being a Powerful Sith and has replicated most of Darth Vader's imperial accomplishments. My guess is that his interest in Grogu's midichlorian count is because he wants to become a force user too so he can even replicate Darth Vader's force abilities and be the Next Darth Vader.
I think he likely has a few ISDs hidden away somewhere, but uses his Arquitens exclusively for travel and transport of small missions. An ubiquitous light cruiser that has been around since the Clone Wars is a lot easier to ignore than an ISD.
Same reason that US state governors don't have their own aircraft carriers. "Moff" is actually a civilian job - the military title just to keep consistent with Imperial government rules of placing military ranks above civilian ones. They can only express their desires to actual military officers (admirals, generals) whom draw up plans to make it happen. Taking direct command is not their job.
With a crew of 37,000 required for each ISD maybe he lacks the resources to secure one. The imperial remnant are comprised of the most die hard of imperials and I imagine most would have defected.
Moff Gideon is just a chess piece for Thrawn. He’s good for an end and when his usefulness runs out he’ll be sacrificed for the greater end. Have no doubt that Thrawn is still alive. I’m sure that we’ll see him in the Ahsoka series, but most likely as a cameo in The Mandalorian to not only help the story along but to give a tease for (again) the Ahsoka series.
well, this might be a spoiler to most people but Ahsoka did mention something about Thrawn. Plus, in this era that the mandalorian takes place in. A big star destroyer would look out of place and since they are pretty slow. X-wings could take it out pretty easy and we don't really know how many tie-fighters are still around and how much Moff Gideon could get a hold of. Plus, Star destroyers need a large crew to keep them running. like you said so. This just not the best thing right now. Im sure Thrawn still has his somewhere.
Becuase he’s not a real moff, all the moffs died on the first Death Star 9 years (I think) previously. He promoted himself to moff after the fall of the empire. He probably was just a admiral or commander who had the cruiser.
I like your assessment. Since first seeing his ship, I figured his reasoning, while he would certainly have the pull to get an Imperial class or even a surviving Executor class, is that he wanted something small, fast, easy to hide yet big enough to accomplish his goals.
I doubt it'll happen but I think it would be really cool to see Gideon's forces eventually turn out to actually have a larger, older ship like a Venator or something under their command - less brute force than an ISD but far more flexible, smaller crew, and still has enough mass and presence to be a big message saying "don't fuck with us". There's still the matter of Thrawn, too - with the way he's been treated in the story of The Mandalorian so far as the mysterious leader of this Imperial faction, I think he's bound to have something up his sleeves.
Light Cruiser was more than enough ship for the mission. It can handle anything that it's likely to run across in the outer rim, presumably it's speedy and relatively low key. And it's not like the Moff is going into space combat, he's running around doing a fetch quest essentially.
Well if y’all are wondering what is moff Gideon the moff of, he actually wasn’t a moff. He was a high ranking ISB officer, not even agent. After EP’s death he granted himself the rank of moff. That’s all we know of at least.

Would be nice if we some Remnant (either Gideon or Thrawn) have a small fleet of the more obscene and less popular imperial star destroyer, frigates, and cruisers, the Empire had some small unique ships that would look great on screen.
The Arquitens was his base of operations for finding the child. He may very well have Star Destroyers in hiding, keeping them operational but not active. In A New Hope we never saw anything beyond single ISDs and the Death Star, while the actual Imperial Fleet was revealed in the films to follow. Similarily, in the Mando S3 pilot, there could be a scene where the Moff returns to his actual fleet kept in the background. There are a lot of parallels from Gideon to Vader, who as we all know was commanding a normal ISD for day-to-day stuff and kept his real fleet and flagship in reserve.
To make things work for the Third Republic and to satisfy Mon Mothma's anti-war policy, the demilitarization be limited to just half of the Republic military only. Because there will always be other half to response in case a threat like the First Order emerged.
well he was a isb officer which is possibly why he had a small amount of ships. or he has could not get his hands on a ISD because the remaining "moffs" were now warlords and took claim on the main fleets. i am 100% sure that pre death of the emperor he had a fleet or at the least he had 1 ISD.
I always assumed it was to stay as hidden as possible but still have fire power to do his covert ops. Arquitens(or However it’s spelled) are pre empire, can land on planets, are much easier to hide, very well armed for their size, and cheaper to run while rebuilding. It just always made sense that even if he had one he wouldn’t use it at least not yet
I think in Legends they said it took the GDP of an entire Medium-sized system to pay for one ISD. It also doesn't help that the RA/NR's primary capital ship was the MC80, which habitually carried a substantial strike craft contingent. 1v1, my money would be on the MC80. All they had to do was engage the ISD at extreme range (which wasn't hard considering the MC80's speed) and rely on it's strike craft and ludicrous amount of shielding to take out the ISD through attrition.
I always thought there were hundreds, if not thousands of Moffs. We see huge numbers of Senators in the Republic/Imperial senate and each Moff is a "Sector Governor", representing (according to some Legends material) 50 or more inhabited worlds. What was new was the Idea of GRAND Moff's, whose authority covered multiple sectors. Something Tarkin suggested to Palpatine to deal with cross-sector insurgencies.
Moff Gideon seems to favor a small yet mobile group to get his objectives completed very similar to the Rebels. He seems to have learned from the failure of the Tarkin Doctrine and a switched gears to the dark trooper program teamed with small strike groups.
Likely under Admiral Thrawn's grasp. *Edit:* Excuse me. Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn's fleet is hiding, but it constitutes as a tactical fleet. That includes at least (6) Star Destroyers, First-Class. Beware of this threat, if Thrawn is doing something; it's very calculated.
There were way more than just twelve moffs in the empire. There were actually about 20 grand moffs, one for each imperial over-sector. These twenty large areas of space were divided into a total of roughly a thousand or so smaller sectors. These sectors were led by regular moffs and sector governors (the two roles were similar). All of these individuals answered to the grand moff that ruled their over-sector.
I'm calling it this way: He's trying to stay hidden, quiet. Hell he might have one stashed somewhere else, but the Arquitens is his go-to for small ventures like this. Imagine how the NR would react if an ISD showed up.

The Arquients cruiser doesn’t really look like an Arquients cruiser in the Mandalorian. It is similar in shape (but the bottom is much bigger) and it’s about 6 - 8x larger than the Arquients specs. The shot of the Dark Troopers exiting it in “The Tragedy” shows the massive size of the ship and an Imperial Shuttle could never land INSIDE an Arquients because it wouldn’t be able to fit. For that matter the cruiser didn’t have a hanger deck of tie fighters and a seperate hanger that could fit an x-wing. In the animated shows the shuttles and TIE fighters would dock outside. This is a seriously beefed up version or a new ship altogether.
Fuel consumption, general size, speed maybe, crew size, supplying said crew… Just a few more reasons to add… It’s all in all a very Good video on an interesting topic..!
My theory is he just chooses to use his heavily modded Arquitens because of how bad ash it is. Its everything he needs in a ship smaller and more maneuverable than an isd but larger and much more powerful than a stock Arquitens
Could you do a breakdown of Gideon's cruiser. It seems larger than a normal Arquitens. It has a hanger bay that can land a Lambda shuttle, that was never something we have seen in the Clone Wars or the Rebels. It probably has heavy modification but still the hanger space is pretty large, so the light cruiser has to at least have been enlarged a little. That is just what i have noticed, though a breakdown would be interesting to listen to.

When thrawn went missing the emperor and tarkin decided to agree with krennic death star which was a revised design of what the geonosians made. Vader continued on believing similarly to thrawn not thinking as arrogantly as the emperor.
Makes perfect sense from a tactical standpoint. He is highly mobile and able to conduct special operations with his Dark Troopers. And let's not forget that for a poorly defended world even an Arquitens cruiser is a threat. This model does have turbolasers, lasers and missiles.

Hello there
A good break down and reasonable explanation.
Next episode he pulls up with a super star destroyer
Then in Season 3 he pulls up with the Sith Eternal, than in Season 4 he has Starkiller Base, then in Season 5 he gets the Sun Crusher
Then in season 6 he gets the star forge
Season7 he gets a galaxy sized ship
It would make sense to keep any ISDs he has hidden. He could have one has a main base, and use the smaller ship to run errands.

Logistics: the key to Victory In war
Imperial remnant forces in The Mandalorian
*-* 1 | 546 class cruiser
*-* 1 | Gozanti class cruiser
I believe grand admiral Thrawn still have some star destroyers in this period like his Legends counterpart.
The empire should've kept the Venator, but modified for an escort role.
In episode 3 of season 2 of the Mandalorian Gideon talked about there being a fleet when Bo Katan was stealing the ship
smaller ship, smaller signature.... faster to deploy, easier to hide, and perfect for clandestine natures of missions Moff Gideon needs....
a star destroyer was the epitome of the empire saying "LOOK at me, fear me, for I have a bigger gun!"
Gideon's ship using less resources and making less of an impact can navigate unhindered and also operate throughout the galaxy without drawing too much focus to their presence, and if noticed can alter its' signature ID to that of a repurposed or captured Imperial ship by smugglers or merchants...
and would be a lot easier to hide in asteroid fields and such even near/behind moons in order to remain undetected....
I think that a high-ranking Imperial has a right to choose his/her flagship. If I were an Imperial, I would choose a Quasar light carrier
Incredible ship
I’d choose an isd 1 for the throwbacks
Wait... why the Dorito and not the Ton-Falk?
The first order formed from the empire in wild space which is east of the outer rim, not in the unknown regions.
My reactions to some of his appearances were always like this:
"Ah, shit, his TIE has folding wings"
"Ah, shit, he has Deathtroopers now"
"Oh come on, he has THE DARKSABER?!"
"Oh great, he has an Arquitens now"
I wouldn't honestly be suprised even if he would have an entire fleet of Super Star Destroyers
Honestly i would watch a battlestar galatica type show where a lone star destroyer has to survive as it flees to the unknown region of soace

Less annoying than jedi-jedi, but annoying nevertheless

Yes, of course, the all mighty *soace*
Same reason that US state governors don't have their own aircraft carriers. "Moff" is actually a civilian job - the military title just to keep consistent with Imperial government rules of placing military ranks above civilian ones. They can only express their desires to actual military officers (admirals, generals) whom draw up plans to make it happen. Taking direct command is not their job.
With a crew of 37,000 required for each ISD maybe he lacks the resources to secure one. The imperial remnant are comprised of the most die hard of imperials and I imagine most would have defected.
That number is honestly really retarded.
37000 to run a full watch routine. You coukd stretch it out with probably half as a skeleton crew
Moff Gideon has a destroyer .....it's just in the shop now.
well, this might be a spoiler to most people but Ahsoka did mention something about Thrawn.

Long answer: Its too expensive and there are better alternatives
One doesnt draw their trump card in the first round
Short answer: he probably does have one
Long answer: he probably does have one but chose the Arquetins because it better suited the mission.
I like your assessment. Since first seeing his ship, I figured his reasoning, while he would certainly have the pull to get an Imperial class or even a surviving Executor class, is that he wanted something small, fast, easy to hide yet big enough to accomplish his goals.
None of it will matter as long as Mando gets an old man with a thermal detonator next to Gideon.
Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, BOOOOOOOOOOOM! 😁
He might have some clone wars ships like an Aclemator or Venator. Like in the old ledgends

This Jobber reminds me of the Asian guy in "Better Off Dead" who learned to speak English by listening to Howard Cosell
What are you on about?
I always thought there were hundreds, if not thousands of Moffs.
We see huge numbers of Senators in the Republic/Imperial senate and each Moff is a "Sector Governor", representing (according to some Legends material) 50 or more inhabited worlds.
What was new was the Idea of GRAND Moff's, whose authority covered multiple sectors. Something Tarkin suggested to Palpatine to deal with cross-sector insurgencies.
I think that he didn't have enough resources to have an ISD

Why would he, in the star wars universe a single fighter can destroy one.
