- 1966-74 Can-Am cars racing at the Monterey Historic Automobile Races. Lots of action at the Corkscrew. Bobby Rahal goes from last to first in the Steed Lola T310. "Unbelievable".

I shed a tear.
In the final days of the McLaren / Porsche battles, McLaren ran 494 cubic inch V-8, and a 507 V-8, but couldn’t beat the turbos.
The way McLaren dominated the earlier years of the Can Am with scant mechanical failures, it came as a surprise to me when, in the 1970s, I heard they were blowing up engines to stay competitive.
stationed at Ft Ord during the 80s, miss that track! Saw all sorts of Vintage, GTP, Ferrari Days, etc.. beautiful place, except when I was lugging a rucksack on the hills north of the corkscrew! Thanks for the vid, that was always the best viewing spot, besides the front straight.
1:10 - yup, got on the go pedal just a fraction of a second too soon out in that dust, I'd dare to guess. When I asked racer/engine builder Dave Handy what technique is required for driving Can Am cars, his reply was: "pretend you've got an egg between your foot and the gas pedal." :-P
You would believe a grown man can cry. Ouch!
Nice Video, I was in that race. The group before was the Trans-Am cars. They kicked up all kinds of dirt onto the track there. Visibility from a Can-Am car is pretty limited due to the huge fenders, plus they are climbing the hill to the corkscrew. I'm not saying they didn't see the dirt, but maybe only for a split second. Being the pace lap, the cars were side by side which isn't easy to maintain in the corkscrew. It's better to go single file then pair up after. I think the guy that spun was trying to scoot in front of the guy that hit him. It would have worked without the dirt.
I saw a rare interview with Denny . He loved these cars, more so than F1 cars. Denny I saw as a spectator in the paddock on quiet days was quite a chatterbox , heard him tell a number of fascinating stories.
1:11 both drivers raise the their hands like "fuck sake" lol
Yes. Every August, although they don't always have Can-Am cars.
I can't imagine what the expense would be for the fabrication work it would take to repair those crashed vehicles.
old school race car design --- draw it up on paper --- let's see if it works. Lived in Toro Park for 12 years --- same hills as Laguna Seca. The Historics always brought a lot of cars that were not for the track --- just in the area --- great time.
Some great footage there!
Great Video - love the Can Am cars so much...the crash 1:19 not... :-((
XXXXXX Lovely Stuff...
They need this group again. They remixed their prototype groups last year and kept it for this year. I miss the Can Am and FIA groups. Also, why do they love saying "sports racing cars" so much?
I heard that sound dba limits have been implemented at Laguna Seca in recent years, true?
Idk why he'd go up there so high into all the debris (sand) like that.
Edit. At 1:29-:30 quite the size difference between the white and blue cars.
@WorldChallenge It used to cost thousands,now?.....double or triple it....and probably more before I end this message.
i should have stayed.... I left with some friends to check out pebble beach :(
lost it on the PACE LAP....
I wish they wouldnt even race those can ams when they crash i cry
kidracer18 they were built to be raced and thats exactly what there owners are doing...racing them.
if it looks slippery, it probably is.............................let me drive that car! This driver should keep to slot cars!
He got in that loose dust.. Experienced racers look out for that stuff... any kind of fluid or dust on a track is not fun on sticky slicks!!
When cars raced and big engines had big cams and HP, miss the sound of power unlike F1 today hybrid horseshit, fuel consumption and tire management, sad.
F1 has been sucking for quite some time. Was never a fan of open-wheel race car designs anyway.
That was back in the era when a single set of tires had to last the length of the race.
Freaking idiots who put all that "pretty" fine dirt around the track should be shot at sunrise. It's nothing but a safety hazard causing many spins and yellow flags to clean it up. Loser management at Laguna should have left it alone.
