Happy Knitting :)
Using the knitting needles is genius! Sometimes I roll mine a little to tight and think having that extra round bit to a grip will make it much easier to pull it out! Definitely going to try that!
I love that you let your kitty hang out.
A few years ago I bought an antique drum carder at a flea market. Some spinners in the online groups told me to buy a boar bristle hairbrush for packing the fiber down . I found one at the Walmart in the hair section. $15. It isn’t hard on the tines, and works like a charm.
Well that was fun!!!! I loved watching you apply the fibre to the board....it must be a very calming and therapeutic creating the colours you want to spin!!! ❤️ Hugo, you are a star 💫. Looking forward to seeing where you take us next!❤️🧶
Using a cutting board as your base is genius! I have always wanted a blending board as soon as I saw one being used, but the cost! This puts one within my grasp financially. Thank you!
I love how you’re like, “I wanna do this thing so I’m just gonna DO THE THING” and it always turns out wonderful. Amazing. 👍🏻
thank you!
I seem to like mostly the same colors as you do! I made my own blending board, too! I waited and waited for the bit of carding cloth to arrive in the mail, but it finally got here.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful work
It is so nice to see someone treat their cat as a person!
I don’t really care for cats. however I must say your cat is very beautiful I’ve never seen a cat with fur that looks like yours. With the white underneath. What a beautiful cat
I have to say your spinning related videos are really inspiring. I bought my first spindle a year ago and my first wheel in October. Perfect timing for joining in on your spinning journey. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us!
Thank You for taking the time to video all this and for sharing the links! Looking forward to more videos.
You are a genius!!!!! This was so great. Now I want to go right out and try this myself. Would love to see more of you playing with the board. This was really great! Have fun!!!😄
Really enjoyed watching you make the fibre content. Very interested in seeing more. Thank you for sharing this with us. xxJane
That was great fun, well done you, can’t wait to see more. I so wanted to have a go xx
My cats are like yours is. They need to be the center of attention sometimes.
So fun to see our DIY project! Would love to see more and am curious how you made your batt. Always learn from and enjoy your podcasts, Mina.
Oh my...I want to make one! Thanks Mina. Please keep these informative vids coming. It is helping my spinning mojo.
Thanks for sharing Mina. I've been thinking of making my own blending board as I too love spinning from rolags and the ease of portability with rolags but its difficult to afford a top brand blending board. Your first batts and rolags turned out great and I'm excited to see how they look as spun yarn.
so enjoyable watching & listening to you. a great help to be able to diy blending board. things are so expensive in fiber supplies & equipment, saving where we can is a great blessing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for sharing! I'm quite unfamiliar with fiber/spinning/etc, and it was so fun to watch you make your first rolags. I'd love to see more of your firsts as you experiment more! ...and this may end up having to be another hobby I try out... :D
Love this. The very definition of "Nevertheless, she persisted!"
Thank you for this video. I have been considering making a blending board too, so has been very helpful. The packs from World of wool look lovely, will have to get some. x
I use a large old wooden button and my husband drilled varying sized holes for a diz. 😀
What a fabulous and fun idea to make a DIY blending board. I’ve been looking i to doing something like this. An enjoyable vlog and want to give this a go too. Thank you for a great video!
This is great! My daughter was gifted a very old drum carder that sings very loudly (to be kind). This looks like a more relaxing solution to achieve a similar goal. Thank you so much! I hope I can find the carding cloth in Canada.
You did a great job with your first rolags, lovely. I made my blending board too, so glad that making it myself was an option because when I made mine it was a little over 1/4 the cost of buying one. Enjoy.
Awesome video and flags! Thanks Mina. I also love spinning from rolags but I don't have a blending board. I have used the one at my spinning guild but held off buying one due to cost. Now I'm off to look at making my own one now!! Thanks again.
Excellent video. Love seeing Hugo too
I like to spin from pencil roving, so I shaped them off my blending board instead of forming rolags. It's just my preference.
This was great. I got a blending board for Christmas and didn’t think to make batts with it! I’ll have a play tomorrow with that. 😀
Excellent and informational. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this how to! Looks so fun 😄. I haven’t ever tried rolags, this may be the way to try!
Thank you for the inspiration to make my own blending board.
I have absolutely no knowledge about this topic and found it so interesting and ingenious. Thank you.
Love wingham wool, hadn't seen the carding cloth on their site, just paused the video and have ordered some! Thank you!!
oh yay hope you have fun with it!
@@KnittingExpat I'll let you know!
Loved this thank you for sharing
Thanks Mina. I think just knitting is enough for me. But love watching what you're doing
Great video. Good luck with everything 💞😃🇩🇰
Freaking awesome. You did that!! Would love to see how you made the mini batt.
Thank you for doing this video, I have been wanting a blending board forever, the prices for it are not in my budget, so I ordered the diy kit from the Netherlands with the link you provided. I wanted the cloth only but they were out of stock, even so the kit is still cheaper than buying the ready made.Hugs coming your way, give Layla an extra cuddle from me
thank you for this video. very helpful diy
I love Wingham wool but didn’t know world of wool did discovery packs, I’m going to have to check them out 😀
I'm not a spinner, but I found this to be so interesting. It looked like a lot of fun. This is one of the reason's I love your Vlogs. You are always doing something fun! Missed seeing Layla. She must have been with Grandma.
Layla goes to nursery a few days each week
OMG your cat is adorable 😍
When you dye that nylon-polwarth blend, the nylon will probably stay mostly white because it’s a synthetic fiber. It might be stained a bit, but it will remain mostly white
Nylon can be dyed with acid dyes just like protein fibers. I was very surprised to find this out so I tried it for myself and the results were beautiful! You are correct though, most synthetic fibers can't be dyed with acid dyes.
What cute little rolags! I'd say those look great for a first time as they look professional to me.
Thank you Shauna ... I'm so chuffed with how this whole thing worked out
Mina!!! 😍I desperately want to make one of these now!!! I would love to see a demo on how you made the mini batt! 💕
Yes I will definitely do that! its really simple ... I just wanted to give it a go off camera before I did one recorded incase I fluffed it up! - and totally give it a go!
I ended up getting a mixed bag of different fibers and have absolutely no idea what most are! I do know I’m not interested in doing much with shimmer fiber and tinsel, so I’m using that to practice using my blending board!
Really interesting video. xx
Really cool
great job
A dog bush. Wood cutting board. Staple gun. Blending cloth. Boom.
Blending board.
Thank for taking the time for this DIY.. Also do giving the info in the show notes! I think I may make one of these. ❤️
Where did you get the hand blending tool (the blue one)?
Thanks Tina.
its just a cat slicker brush I found on amazon
Since you’re making your blending board, don’t forget to get a flick carder and dowels so you can blend and remove the rolags!
Ahh those are in the second half of the video!
Well done, Mina! Spinning is not in the cards (pun intended) for me, but I so enjoy watching your progress and look forward to seeing more. Happy to see Hugo again but wish Derek were more gregarious. I love his snaggle tooth. And what of the lovely Layla? Will we see her soon?
I just uploaded a video with layla helping me with a fibre haul
Your rolags are awesome, soooo beautiful and stunning. Thank you for sharing how to make the mini bat, that is fab. Please Mina I want to ask you about the ball winder you showed us few months ago. Is good ?. thank you so much 💐
oh yes that ball winder is great ... it took a bit of getting used to when I first got it but now it works great although it is quite loud
Thank you Mina, I wanted a ball winder for ages, I have one from the charity shop , I used it for 3 years ( not bad for a fiver) but it is pretty horrible 😕, it chew the yarn! thank very much for sharing and showing us, in Vogue festival vlog, this great ball winder! Thank you very much 💐
Oh I forgot to mention I've already made my own carding combs & two hackles.... All DIY nothing was pre fabricated...
good for you
Hello Mina,... Hugo is adorable Spinning Kitty fur is kinda hard I tried it already when my Kitty (Bibi) was moulting and maybe I put too much twist in it just to keep it together....:( Let me know how you come out with Hugo's fur. Have a Wonderful day. Oh.... Love all of your podcast just wonderful and informative.
Great video! I just bought carding cloth to do the same thing but still need a base. How has the bamboo cutting board been holding up? Only wondering because somewhere I heard that a bamboo base might not hold the staples well. Anyway, thanks for the vid
Hi Riz … I haven’t had any issues with the bamboo base it’s holding up really well and I’ve used it a fair amount over the last while!
@@KnittingExpat good to know, thanks!
Can you explain which direction the pins should be on your blending board in relation to the pins on the brush please? I’m really sorry, I don’t quite understand. I’m completely new to this and trying to see the essentials that I’ll need too, I’ve got a drop spindle and a couple of dog brushes, and that’s all so far. I’ve done needle felting before so I know what merino tops are, (no idea what all the other names are so I’m going to have to look up all the terminology 😅) Thanks so much ❤
i have the pins on the board facing upwards towards the top of the board and then pet brush i used it upside down and brush downwards from top to the bottom of the board. I hope that helps and sorry for the super late reply.
Where did you get your cutting board and what is the size please?
I cannot recall the size but I checked the size of the carding cloth I was purchasing and got one that was slightly larger. I got the board from Homesense here in the UK but you can probably find something similar on amazon
so if you didn't count the stapler how much do you think it totaled in price? i really liked your diy this is how i am too thank you
the total cost was around £70 and the stapler was £13 so without that it would have been £57 and an ashford blending board costs £130 ... the most expensive part of making this myself was the carding cloth which cost £43 which was the cheapest I could source for where I live ... I've included other links for other carding cloth I found in other places so depending on where you live you may find those more accessible
@@KnittingExpat thank you i am interested in this that you have done i hope you show more using it and how those rolags spin up
How do you know how many layers to do for each batch ?
its just based on how much I can feel fits comfortably on the board ... its hard to explain but becomes quite clear once you are laying on the fibre.
That's not a DIY blending board you bought the pinned cloth/sheet... Did you mention how much that cost?????I'm so determined now!!! So I'll make the whole lot myself... Real DIY, No way I'm being ripped off buying that carding cloth if I can find you again I'll share it with you..
I included a link to the carding cloth in the description box. also even though I didn't make the cloth myself doesn't make this any less of a DIY. I still put the thing together from the component parts. You wouldn't say someone who baked a loaf of bread didn't make it from scratch cause they didn't grow and grind their own flour!
Oh, Mina, I find your kitty so distracting. Can we see him when you are finished?
well its his house too
This is potentially a very interesting video, but the cat was VERY distracting, so at 7:50 I stopped watching...
