There is no way to really choose between Luther and Chaka..both versions make the hair stand on my neck...Luther is just TOO DAMN SMOOTH...RIP my soul brother
For me, THIS IS Luther Vandross at his very finest. Production perfect in every single way.. Amazing vocals, heartbreakingly beautiful lyrics right down to the orchestration from Greg Diamond & Bionic Boogie. The music now - can NEVER match what was back then. This truely is a magical gem that stood the test of time.
RIP Gregg Diamond... One of the most beautiful orchestrations on a song ever produced in any era. Some say Luther did most of the arranging on this masterpiece yet didn't get credited...
Might be true but Luther sang with EVERYONE in the 70's including Diana Ross, Roberta Flack,Carly Simon, Chaka Khan, Todd Rundgren's Utopia, Donna Summer, Bette Midler, Chic,Barbra Streisand, David Bowie, Boinic Boogie, his band Luther, another one Charme, and another: Mascara and more. So going from Bionic Boogie to Change would be just another day on the hustle for him, relationship drama or not. He was, before coming a superstar, one of the greatest session singers in the game.
In one step, Luther put himself in the league of Philippe Wynne, Marvin Gaye and even his idols Aretha Dionne and Diana. When "A House is Not a Home" was noticed on his first solo album, it was the start, appropriately, of thinking of him among Stevie, Sinatra, Bennett and Mathis. Luther knew what was good and had the gifts to live up to our shared musical ideals unswervingly, You will never be forgotten, Luther.
The 70s were the greatest some of the best music ever made you very seldom heard the bullshit like they have out today. So sorry to see this type of music go. Listen to the background singers and the music people sang to real music and not tracks. When you saw a performer live in concert they had live orchestras behind them or their own band it was wonderful.
To some of you who are not aware, Luther recorded this version in 1978 with (Greg Diamond &) Bionic Boogie. Chaka recorded her version in 1980 (with Luther, Whitney, and mom, Cissy on backups). Luther's is the first known version. It is from the Bionic Boogie album of the same title, "Hot Butterfly." The entire album is a dance floor legend. There is no escaping that Greg Diamond piano! It's his trademark sound -- as if he created boogie-woogie rag-time funk.
from luther's voice, to the writing, to the background music and vocals...there is absolutely NOTHING wrong about this song except that it has to end. always loved this tune.
Total MASTERPIECE! Chaka's version is also gorgeous, but the feeling is very different. Luther, oh how we miss you. And the production and mix on this is breathtaking.
There are certain 'building blocks' to a classic tune like this, Great song, fabulous production, just enough orchestration, & arrangement topped of with possibly THE best male vocalist EVER, make this a truly 'world class' song. But this track has that magic that cant be added or taken away, it's just there & I LOVE IT!!!!! One of my all time favorite songs, nuf said!!
Late 70's (1979 actually) on a British Merchant ship off the coast of Myrtle Beach - picked up a radio station - this was playing - blew my mind then - living in America now and STILL blows my mind perhaps even more - ahhhh the memories
I've been looking alllllllll over for this song. Brings me back to my childhood. Sad that I had to type in Chaka Khan to find it, however I knew she couldn't have been the original artist. I remember it being a male's voice. MY BOY LUTHER!!!!!
I never knew all these years that Luther sung this song first until today my coworker told me and I've listened to Chaka sang this song and sends chills down my back😳😳😳 Luther I'm giving you 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍's up rest in peace Mr. Voice🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🎼🎼🎶🎶🎤🎤🎤💕
Don't care when or where it originated, I love it. Grew up on this music as an 80's teen (born '72) and love every lil' bit of it! Brilliant music, and as a musician myself, gotta say, flippin'eck 'that bassist is worth his/her weight in 'solid gold!' Know what I'm sayin?
Yes that bassist is tearing it up.But let's not forget those fantastic backup vocalists who are Bionic Boogie. They are tearing the roof off with their super tight harmonies and unisons.
🔥🔥🔥 awesome .....I can't believe I just got turned on to this masterpiece....Luther blessed this.....and that Bass line "doing the damn thing".....I'm such a Bassline head🔥🔥🔥
Love the musical arrangements and the vocal arrangements. Luther was a class act. You can't find R & B artist with good arrangements like this anymore.

This is an awesome version of this song. Everything that Luther sang turned to gold. He was an awesome singer. I always felt like he should have been singing gospel. He has such a awesome voice. Only God knows best. Rest in Peace Luther.
This was my all time Luther Vandross song. I have the vinyl, bought in the 70s when I was in high school. The DJ played this song at the end of dance marathon in Miami Springs.
Let us Thank our Heavenly Father for giving us Luther Vandross for the years we had him and let us look forward to the new music that he is working on with Archangel Sandalphon in his Divine dimension! Amen! 🌠👍🌠 ,🌈🌈
It's amazing how you can forget great songs, and then stumble across one and remember how much you loved it. This is one such song. I remember this and hearing Luther before he became. LUTHER. I also remember when he sang lead for a group I believe was called CHANGES, again before he became LUTHER. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. This song takes me back . So good . And at the risk of sounding like a worn out cliche, "WHEN MUSIC WAS MUSIC" MIss this music. Miss you Luther
You're absolutely right about that !!! Luther & Hot Butterfly was and still is an incredibly sexy song. With Gregg & Godfrey Diamond's fabulous orchestra arrangement, Luther's beautiful velvet voice, lilting background singers...it was a hauntingly love-forever song that stays hidden in your memory🌹 and your ❤️ It's not like any other song ever written🦋the world misses Luther & his magic✨
I broke this one in with the Change of Pace Nightclub crowd in downtown Houston back in the late 70's along with Luther's group called Luther. Those were truly the days, we had some of the best steppers in the land back then and when this song was played the show was on...RIP Luther, you gave us so much timeless music!
+James Sherrod I kind of laugh whenever I step into a club today and observe the crowd and hear what there listening to and I think to myself you have no idea what really great music and making good friends is all about...Thanks for posting and keeping our memories hot as a butterfly baby..Peace to You..!
Judges, Annabelle, Elan, Spat. Those were my places 1979. I was in ninth grade and 5’11”. I had an older sibling of age. What a time. I’m so glad I was able to experience it. There has been nothing like it. Tangerine in Austin was close but not quite.
I listen to the song about every day. The tempo, rhythm, and harmony of this song is so beautiful. Incidentally, the days when I don't listen to this version, I listen to Chaka Khan's version. Her high-pitched voice on some of the lyrics are just equally as beautiful. This song, either version, never got much playing time. I never understood why.
What a brilliant song. And I thought I was a dedicated Luther fan. This man just knew how to approach any song and how to bring it's lyrics to life. Incredible Luther.
You know I respect what you said, but I feel like both versions are great in their own right. Luther and Chaka added their own flavors. Too bad they never dueted together.
Thanks, there are people who like music, then there are those who 'feel' it & I'm glad to be one of the latter, just like you!! Love your description too & couldn't have put it better myself. ;)

THE MOST UNDERRATED SONG IN HISTORY
Hidden Gem
Oh Yes!
Penso proprio di sì , The PERFECT SONG 👏👏👏👏👏
Definitely underrated!! Been listening to this since it came out in 1980!
Even better than Chaka :)
There is no way to really choose between Luther and Chaka..both versions make the hair stand on my neck...Luther is just TOO DAMN SMOOTH...RIP my soul brother
Yes indeed

You are Absolutely right my Soul Sister, This is Luther at his very Best,Nothing comes even close......... PREACH !!!!
I agree!!!
RIP Gregg Diamond...
One of the most beautiful orchestrations on a song ever produced in any era.
Some say Luther did most of the arranging on this masterpiece yet didn't get credited...
Many people don't know that Luther helped make this song.
Luther also worked on Jump to It by Aretha Franklin.
Thanks for this
info BBwjb3.❤
And he also sang background on the original version of THIS song with Chaka.
YES!! One of the GREATEST!!
@@marlandtownsend4715 This is the original version of the song. Chaka's was a cover .
The Luther sound was always there. He created that back in 1974. And for 30 years, that sound dominated black music. Rest in peace, Luther. 🕊
I REMEMBER GOING TO NYC. 1980 .GOING THROUGH THE LINCOLN TUNNEL.WHEN COMING OUT THIS SONG WAS WELCOMING ME HOME.
He doesn't sing this, he lives it.
I've only known this song because of Chaka Khan but Luther Vandross sung it in a way that made me truly understand its meaning. A true storyteller.
Same ere, not knowing that she did a cover.
Chaka sang it first but luther sang background for her
The marriage of disco, stepping, and hustle. Luther was destined to be a star.
Chanson papillion: This was the first time I remember hearing Luther, and this early song is still one of his best.
You articulated my exact feelings and thoughts. Well done.
Graet turn remember it well play it to death

When you saw a performer live in concert they had live orchestras behind them or their own band it was wonderful.
Man my foster parent said that she used to be able to dance to the whole 8 minutes 😂😂 she’s 70+... this is damn good music. I did the full 8 💃
This will always be the best version for me, not because it's the original but because Luther has never sounded better.
Never heard this version. All I can say is Holy Cow! Luther, we are still in awe even after you've gone. Thanks mm1.
To some of you who are not aware, Luther recorded this version in

Cuddly also sang on this one as well with Tawatha Agee
from luther's voice, to the writing, to the background music and vocals...there is absolutely NOTHING wrong about this song except that it has to end.
always loved this tune.
Total MASTERPIECE! Chaka's version is also gorgeous, but the feeling is very different. Luther, oh how we miss you. And the production and mix on this is breathtaking.
Soooo underrated. Found the Vinyl in the 80s, loved it and still have it.
I solve complicated mathematical equations listening to this epicness...
There are certain 'building blocks' to a classic tune like this, Great song, fabulous production, just enough orchestration, & arrangement topped of with possibly THE best male vocalist EVER, make this a truly 'world class' song.
