    Now this is what I call a lesson. When I see how it's done I learn better to do it myself. I don't have a liking in video tutorials where the process is explained. Show me is how I learn and enjoy the most.

    I'm going to go out on a limb here and claim that I learned more from this tutorial than I have from any other speed drawing on YT. Even though it is a speed demo, it wasn't a done in 2 minutes demo where you couldn't follow along. Nicely done. Looking forward to more of the full-length tutorials on the members site.

    Mate I've been watching your vids today and you are awesome. I hope you don't own a camera because you just don't need the damn thing. If you can get the subject to hold still long enough, your going to have a picture every bit as detailed and realistic.
    I have seen a few people who draw on the internet, that are somewhere on the scale in your league and you guys just blow me away every time I see what you guys can do.
    I love art in any form so do photography and its certainly my passion in life, but to be able to create something as detailed as a photo, with your own hands and skill, is truly a gift. Thank you so much for posting and sharing it.

      I think the goal for realistic pencil artists should be to improve upon the reference material they are using. We can leave out distracting elements and enhance other areas to create our own version of the subject.

  • @jcepri

    This is absolutely amazing. It always fascinates me how adding the smallest amounts of graphite can manipulate a shape and make it appear to lift off the page. I have two incredible artists in my family line, my cousin and my great-grandfather. I always thought they had some sort of superpower that enabled them to create life-like drawings and paintings. The more I learn about--and practice--drawing, the more I realize that their main superpower was patience and technical skill. It takes a LOT of patience it to develop this level of skill. JD, I'd love to know if you always had a lot of patience and you applied it to drawing or if drawing helped you developed patience. This is my biggest weakness. I love to draw, but I always feel like I need to finish a drawing i 1 or 2 sessions.

    • @JDHillberry1
      @JDHillberry1  3 роки тому

      Hi Jeff, I don't think I have any more patience than anyone else. People get impatient when they aren't enjoying the activity. You have to train yourself to enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Some people call this "getting in the zone". When time flies by as you are drawing you can go for hours and it feels like minutes. Sometimes it helps to do drawing exercises that don't result in a finished drawing. Try practicing getting gradual values from dark to light. That way, there isn't a real destination so it forces you to enjoy the act of putting pencil to paper.

    • @JDHillberry1
      @JDHillberry1  9 років тому

      CrumplyPizza I think artists should always strive for "better" artwork than their reference. That doesn't always mean more realistic. Once you get good enough with your techniques and understanding of light, it opens a whole new world - rather than just copying a photo.

      +Agui007 You never know what you can do unless you conquer your fears, learn the necessary concepts and techniques, and just Go For It! I always try to keep tow things in mind; First, it's only a piece of paper with some graphite on it and secondly, I can learn more from my mistakes than my successes.

    I've never thought to use measuring tools before. I always eyeball it (no pun intended), and my drawings seem to be pretty hit and miss. I only draw very occasionally and as a hobby, no real formal lessons, so this is very encouraging. Thank you!

    • @JDHillberry1
      @JDHillberry1  7 років тому +2

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video. There are many different ways of using the measuring tools also. You can "eyeball" some key features first, then use the measuring tools to check to see how accurate you are. This will help you learn to be much more accurate at eyeballing it if you choose to continue to do it that way. Or, you can take some precise measurements to start with like I did in this drawing. There are no rules in art. YOU are the one that gets to choose how you create YOUR artwork.

    @kyra chamberlain if you look at his realistic pencil drawing supplies video it will show you there. J.D. uses Stratmore 400 series drawing paper to just practice on because it is cheaper and close to the Archilles paper oh use the back side. J.D. uses Archilles 140lb 100% rag with the purple front on the tablet for his great pictures because it is archival and acid free so it is great for if you want it to stay white forever and not yellow.
