  • Today we showcase one of my new favorite orchids, the Epicattleya Rene Marques Flame Thrower!
    ▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
    This orchid is a cross between Epi. pseudepidendrum x Catt. Claesiana. The pseudepidendrum looks almost identical to it, minus the colors, I had it as long time ago, check it out here • Valentine's Day Orchid...
    The Rene Marques, although not fragrant, is astonishing simply through the wild shape of the flowers and the colors. The lip is a bright golden yellow, the tip of the column is a bright magenta while the sepals and petals are vivid green.
    The plant resembles Epidendrum pseudepidendrum almost entirely, as well as the bloom display which is formed on a pendant flower spike.
    This is a serious candidate in my top favorite orchids, but can it defeat the Nelly Islers? not really, but it's very close!

    I have both this hybrid and it's parent E. pseudepidendrum. The Rene Marques I bought as a tiny plant just a few months out of the flask a couple years ago. I think it might bloom this year. It's a bit bushier than the one in this video but maybe a bit shorter. From what I can tell, the Epidendrum parent is dominant in even in the coloring, if anything the colors are more pastel in the the hybrid and deeper in E. pseudepidendrum. But it gained some heat and drought resistance from the Cattleya parent as E. pseudepidendrum suffers in the heat of the dry season here in the lowlands of Costa Rica, though the Rene Marques I have in almost full sun and it does just fine with water every other day in a basket with mix of charcoal and cork. Also E. pseudepidendrum gets really tall, over a meter when happy. I'm guessing that Rene Marques will max out at maybe half of that. Looking forward to seeing mine finally bloom.

    I have one of this beautys and it almost die in my care because it was mounted on a bismarckia palm and my climate was too dry for her preference,. I manage to pot her a week ago in a mix of bark chips and rock and put it on more shade for her best. While it was mounted it created 2 growth from one cane and 1 more from one of the new ones but a drought change my enviroment and it afected a lot the orchid so I had to do something. Hope yours does better than mine!

    I had 2 of these, but like my encyclias in the past, they didn't last in my care. It may have been the blight or some sickness from my other orchids.

    Some Epidendrums do re flower from old flower spikes and canes, I'm not sure if the pseudoepidendrum does it as well, but it's beautiful none the less. Do you think the flowers may be bigger than the ones of the pure species? Epidendrum pseudoepidendrum is native to Costa Rica, I live here but it's really rare to find it available here. Have fun with these beauties.

    Hi Danny, I have the same orchid from orchidgarden in Poland. And mine has got a fragrance!!!! It is very lightly, but it has one and it reminds me on grapefruits. I love your videos, they inspire me, and my collection grows ...

    I don't like the plant itself as much (I'm not a cane guy), but it's true that the combination of colours if really really nice. It makes me think of late spring and early summer, it has those kinds of colours, wich is nice blooming is winter haha
    I'm really looking forward the mistery video, but if it's just a matter of one or two days I prefer something better done :)

    hey danny! I recently purchased a masdevallia, and I know you didn't have success in the past with the large orange one and I was wondering if you could try again with them? (I keep up to date with your videos but I'm not sure if you have any already) I heard the one I purchased likes intermediate tempratures so you might could find one that would suit your environment possibly?

    Could you do a video talking about the willd orchid phalaenopsis from optiflor? it's a phal so branchy, but all the ones that I see on sale have a terminal spike, and i don't wanna purchase a phal with that type of spike, I'm not sure it's that's normal or is a thricky orchid like the singolo.

    This one really reminds me of some sort of exotic tropical insect, like a praying mantis... the yellow and magenta a butterfly caught in its claws. But this is prolly why I'm an artist! 😄🌱

    Hi Danny,
    I need your advice. I just got this same orchid at a local show. However it doesn't seem to be doing all that great. It came with lots of black soot looking stuff on the roots. I cleaned it up. Drenched it with Hydrogen peroxide and now canes are yellowing. Help please!!

  • @featherwitchorig
    @featherwitchorig 7 років тому

    Oh she's beautiful Danni! Mine is still in bud, though one flower went a little wonky and is half open. The other two spikes are slowly catching up. I hope mine looks as beautiful as yours!
    I put mine in clay pellets and it seems to do fine, so you should be good when you repot! It gets a little water most every day or every other day, but it's in a small greenhouse that gets pretty warm, so it needs it.
    Thanks for posting this! :) ~Amy

    Danny! I bought a mature cross with this orchid that is supposed to be more compact growing, with canes about 12 inches max. Epicattleya Rene Marques 'Flamethrower' x B. glauca. I'll let you (or youtube) know how it blooms for me!! I bought mine from SLO orchids in USA. The glauca causes it to be smaller. I hope the flowers are as striking!

    did you buy this on ebay from falconer1211?, I was watching one that looked about this size and was in spike when i saw it for sale about 2 months ago and nearly bought it!

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 років тому

      nope, I got it from orchidgarden in Poland :) falconer has some great varieties, but they are waaaaaaay over my budget for what I would pay for that orchid, in the state it is in ;)

    • @deanirving9104
      @deanirving9104 7 років тому

      Thnaks i'll try orchidgarden, falconer1211 is admittedly a bit pricey,I bought a cattleya maxima from him that was "near blooming size" for around £20 and got a seedling so I should know better than to buy from him but he does have such great varieties, either way Im gonna keep hunting for my Epc. and bankok sunset, youve made me a fan!
