Epicattleya Rene Marques Orchid - Growth habit and care tips

- Today we talk about one of my favorite orchids, the Flame Thrower orchid with colors beyond imagination :P

Epicattleya Rene Marques 'Flame Thrower' is a hybrid between Epi.dendrum pseudepidendrum and Cattleya Claesiana. It took most of its dominant genes from the Epidendrum though.
This orchid is not a large orchid, but it can grow pretty tall and needs staking or supporting for saving space. The flowers are produced on a very flexible flower spike that arises from the crown.
The flowers look very wild and have intense colors! The sepals and petals are vivid green, the column is a nice green and bright magenta color, while the broad lip is a gorgeous golden yellow. All it's missing is a fragrance.
This is not a fussy orchid and takes pretty much Cattleya orchid care. Warmer temperatures, bright light and even watering make for a happy, blooming orchid!

Can confirm they rebloom from a "spent" spike!! I was surprised today to find a new bud on a spike that finished blooming 2 months ago! I'm pretty stoked, what a bonus!
Yep, can confirm mine also rebloomed on 2 out of 3 spikes this year. Was about to cut it and.. Surprise!!
Nice fun-filled video for what to expect from my new seedling I purchased at OFE Orchids & Supplies in Homestead, Florida plant fair on Saturday. The Orchid Den had some 2" pots and while I have to wait for it to grow I now know the care and light requirements for better growth.

It's a pleasure having a Rene Marques in my collection. I'm moving in 5 days. I hope all my orchids fair well in transport. I fear I will be loosing a lot of buds and blooms during this. Keeping my fingers crossed...
My Rene Marques has indeed grown a new spike off the old flower spike. Completely unexpected, but happily received.

@@ct2m6442 When i purchased it it came in an Orchiata bark mix. It is still in the same mix but is due for a change this year. I'm putting it in a regular bark mix. It's in bloom right now and doing great. 😊 Happy growing!

One of my spikes broke (before it got to put out buds), but put out another offshoot with buds from that spike. Not sure about blooming from old spikes though...

My question is Can the stringy things inside the orchid roots absorb water even if it's rotten i mean when we pull it off there remains string and orchids which i cut started to mold but which i didnt cut was looking a little hydrated Is this a coincidence ? What do you feed Flame Thrower?
Hi, My Rene Marques has a healthy pseudo bulb with two blooms and a smaller unhealthy bulb. The smaller one is losing its leaves and when I sprayed with peroxide, the medium bubbled. I am afraid there's something going on and I should repot and clean it up. My question is, should I peel off the papery covers on the bulbs as part of my cleanup? Thanks, Ellen
Mine is losing leaves on the oldest pseudobulb after they turn yellow. Also, every time I moved it (ie put the pot in a pot holder) or changed anything, the new root tips peeking above the mix died instantly. It seems the roots are really frangile! Any suggestions?
