Also, people don't realise that fully comprehensive cover doesn't necessarily extend into Europe! we read our small print and sure as sh*t there it was..."third party cover only in Europe" luckily we didn't need to claim but now we ring them up and double check we are covered fully comp before we travel over. We had trouble insuring our hymer with Caravan Guard due to value etc and they wanted us to install CCTV and Bollards!! ...we decided not to and went with Camping and Caravan Club instead.
Good point always got to check the small print for sure. I think this is why its better to speak to someone at the end of the phone so you can ask all the questions. Luckily we have fully com in Europe as well. Interesting on your own experiences as well with Caravan Guard.
£840ish with Caravan Guard: I've just done a (pretend) quote check for a motorhome I'm interested in getting Q3/4 of this year (so I put early February for the sake of the quote). I've only got 1 week of motorhome driving experience from a rental. 43 years old, got 5+ years experience of driving motorhome-sized (large) vans, my driving licence and everything is all clean, got 9+ years NCD from my car insurance that I can transfer to the motorhome due to not renewing my insurance for a car. Thatcham 2 immobiliser, reversing camera, CAT 7 tracker, VW 2.1 diesel automatic, value £95k (probably going to be £75k ish), 7k miles, home night parking open on the road and the location made no difference - I tried BIrmingham city centre (high crime area!) and my parents house 15 miles west in a large urban town, no travel to the EU, no protected NCD, £300 excess.
Thanks for sharing your feedback @HappyMotorhoming. We’re sorry we weren’t competitive for you in this instance. Many different factors can influence a quote and the underwriting terms we apply - and each specialist insurer will have a different approach. In the last 12 months we’ve seen an ever growing number of motorhome owners choose to insure with us so we believe we are very competitive for most owners. Also in that time, we’ve been crowned the Insurance Choice Awards and What Motorhome Magazine’s Motorhome Insurance Provider of the Year. We’re disappointed not to be your chosen insurance provider on this occasion but we wish you many happy travels in your very lovely Dethleffs motorhome. Kind regards Liz, Caravan Guard.
Thank you for the reply and as mentioned in the video an honest review of my experience. Can not fault the way your team member dealt with me very professionally and thought all the questions were very thorough. A shame the quote was more expensive than another provider (and no constraints) but you never know in the future our van may become insured by you at one point. Keep up the good work. James
First time Motorhome insurance November, just under £500 for a 2008 van with agreed value and breakdown, legal etc, stored on a Cassoa site
