An enjoyable game at Parkside (23rd March 2024) but St Albans City left Aveley defeated and with the home side level on points with Jon Meakes Saints as the struggle for a place in the National League South play-offs reaches its climax.
A second successive reversal for City looked unthinkable when Shaun Jeffers fired home a 53rd minute penalty to open the scoring. Stung into action, Danny Stokes Millers pulled level direct from a Ikechi Eze free kick on 63 minutes later just three minutes later Razzaq Coleman De-Graft pounced to complete Aveley’s first double over St Albans.
Results elsewhere on Saturday, and on Tuesday, have left eight clubs separated by just six points. Two games in four days for all of the play-off hopefuls over the Easter Weekend will, possibly, go some way towards making the promotion race a tad clearer.
City face Braintree Town on Good Friday having failed to score in each of the five most recent meetings and hammered 4-0 when the two sides met at Cressing Road earlier in the season. Slough Town, still in with a hope of gatecrashing the play-off party, welcome the Saints to Arbour Park on Easter Monday. If the Aveley game is anything to go by supporters are in for a treat over the Bank Holiday weekend whatever the outcome.
Whilst the league remains as the focal point of City’s season, a second cup final was reached on Tuesday night (26th March) when goals by Romeo Akinola, Mitchell Weiss, George Morrall and Benji Mensah secured a place in the final of the Herts Senior Cup at the expense of Ben Herd’s Hertford Town. We are off to Top Field, home of Hitchin Town, on Tuesday 9th April to face Berkhamsted in the final.
