Great tips! Managing the mute/unmute feels like the hardest part! I do Zooms with adults who can't figure out how to have back-and-forth conversations that work on the platform, nevermind trying this with young kids.
It takes practice for everyone, that’s for sure!!! I hope Zoom will come out with a new feature to fix this issue in Outschool classes. Maybe give parents an option to give teacher permission to mute/unmute without going through that added step of acknowledging permission on the screen😬

I'm so glad I got to see this before my first class. I already teach online but the school has every little bit planned for me and it's for littles. My classes on Outschool are for the preteens and so these tips will help a lot! Thanks cheerleader!

Your classes are English classes on Outschool? Where would you say the students are mostly from?
Thanks for sharing this. It is very helpful. Just one question though, when you unmute a student, are they unmuted or do they also have to unmute themselves? I'm just asking because I have a preschool class coming up soon. I'm hop;ing that I can unmute them and they don't have do do anything but speak. Thanks a ton!
They will have to unmute themselves. I tell them in the beginning, and show them the word unmute on my handheld whiteboard. Usually preschool students have a parent right there. Just tell them the expectation up front “when I call your name, you will have to touch the word UNMUTE. give me a thumbs up if you understand.” Many of them are familiar with the format and can easily unmute, but telling them the expectation at the beginning helps the parent help them!

Maryann, I want to teach Outschool. How much do you make weekly and how many hours do you teach....and also how many hours do you plan? How many classes do you have currently?
I teach 13 hours a week, 200+ learners a week, at $7 per learner (after Outschool’s cut) $1400-$1500 per week depending on the number of learners. I spend zero time in planning as I’ve already done that work up front, but I spent many hours perfecting my classes on the front end!

I had no idea you could disallow students to unmute themselves. Do you find that option in settings?
In the participants box, when you click “mute all students,” a pop-up box will come up asking if you want to allow participants to unmute themselves. Uncheck that and then click confirm:)

4-7 year olds
