It cost us $9000 to ship 2 gliders from Hawaii to California. If it costs 4000 Euros round trip from Germany to Aust and back that is not bad.
Per glider he said. So total sum should be x3 :)
Yes, take the parachute always with you in the cabin … for the case of an emergency 😅
Don´t you do this? 😅
I must confess, I have never really thought about how to "pack" gliders as sea freight, but I would have thought that each glider in its disassembled state would have its own transport box, in which the individual parts are held from all sides with supporting hard foam and other shock-absorbing elements (similar to the classic transport trailer, only with different holding systems and much more padding).
For example, comparable to a small case for a disassembled trumpet, in which there is an appropriately customized and padded recess for each part so that nothing can wobble back and forth and can be transported undamaged.
you just never stop learning :)
You can also ship your glider in the trailer. When you remove the wheels of the trailer you may be able to put two trailers in one container or just use roll on roll off option. At the end it is much more expensive and at least for the WGC in Australia we decided for the container option without trailer. Next year for the 18m WGC in the USA will will ship our complete trailer.
Very nice film Stefan, Danke Sehr! And good luck down there!
Very interresting! thanks for the video
That's a lot of precious cargo! Best of luck
…yes, looking forward to your next videos 👍😎
Congratulations with the good result 🤟
Thank you so much!
This is so cool but seriously, this must cost a fortune. Can you do a video for the average viewer talking about the financial sides of things? I mean one would have to be independently wealthy to get involved in this sport, have a glider, attend competitions, etc.
Look into glider clubs. It's the most affordable way to get into aviation in my opinion.
As far as aviation goes, it is indeed the most cheap way of flying. Here in the Netherlands it's about 1000 euro per year, this includes everything from flying, lessons, licence, medical exam and club fees. Too bad I had to put a pin into this project due to private reasons, but once that is less of a factor I will definitely fly again.
@@SerpentNED in the US I'm running about 5 grand ish.
I purchased a 1984 ASW20, owned it for 5 years and sold it for more than I paid. I was told by another private ship owner that owning an older, good glider is parking your money. Soaring is the most economical form of flight and is amazing.
You can't compare flying a world gliding championship with the normal costs of flying in your home country. In Germany it is indeed relatively affordable and you can fly a lot for about 1000 € per year in a club, incl. rental costs of a glider.
Congratulations on your podium 3rd place Stefan. Excellent flying in quite complicated conditions.
Thank you very much!!
Will you be attending the 18m worlds in Uvalde Texas August 2024?
Yes 🙌🏽
So total would be around AUS $10,000,- ~ $12,000,- including accommodation and transport? That to me would be surprisingly cheap.
Stefan please do not keep us waiting too long for the next video. By the way I am trying to get my eldest son who lives in Oldenburg interested in Gliding. I have sent him many of your videos as well as your contact details. Michael from Durban South Africa
I will try edit some videos in the next weeks. It's not easy while traveling and flying a competition to find the time to edit videos ;)
Good lord... I think Hang Gliders are difficult to pack 😅
It can be worse ;)
Lucky😊
How long would it take to fly from Germany to Australia in a glider? Is it possible?
I’m not a pilot, but it’s 13000 kilometres from Germany to Australia in straight line. Assuming we want to stay as much over land as possible and avoiding as many war zones as possible will make this figure even longer. A quick look at a potential route would have to avoid Russia and Ukraine, Iran, Afghanistan and Myanmar. This still leads you over countries such as China, Turkmenistan and Tadzjikistan, which aren’t that great either. A potential route would more likely be more like 15000 kilometres.
Assuming countries aren’t as issue there’s the potential for a lack of airfields in many regions. I also wonder how favourable the weather is for gliders in some of the tropical areas with tropical rains and the like.
While modern gliders have sink rates comparable to and glide ratios far exceeding the best gliding bird, the Frigate Bird, that bird can stay in the air up to ten days or more. Our poor Stefan probably doesn’t want to do sit in the cockpit much longer than a single day at a time.😅
It’s an interesting question but even disregarding politics there’s probably a lack of infrastructure along areas of the route.😢
🤘
24k for container from Garmany to Australia and back... the price is with cost of buying a container 40' for it? Do you have Cost Breakdown? Bucause it isn't even close to market price for that shipment. Cheers
It already includes the transportation on the road, side loader, .... I don't have a cost breakdown but we put a lot of effort into getting an acceptable price.
What about the trailer? Did you rent one?
Looks like the container was shipped directly to the place of the championship.
@@djbeste Exactly. With no trailer, hence the question.
Yes, the container was delivered by truck to the airfield in Narromine. We rigged the gliders there but we also rent a trailer for the case of an outlanding.
@@SteFly Amazing weather (and skill) that you could fly 14 tasks without an outlanding!
How many gliders are being shipped ? It looks like 3 . How was the glider shipped to you ? If differently then why not ship it that way or fly it their ?
Six gliders. See 1:45
@@djbeste WOW !
It’s either 6 single seater, or 4 double seater who fit in one container. At home you store your glider in a trailer, like you see on the cars. That’s how you pic it up at the factory, there is no delivery, because most are manufactured in germany. To ship the trailer would be even more expensive, and you can’t fly with a glider oversee that far. It would take way to match time, and over the ocean without engine is not the best idea.
Right now gliding is an expensive sport , rather than a practical means of transport . Even with a means of self propulsion attached , it's limited range hinders it's mass marketability and practicality .
@@frxnziska_maria The real question then would be , where did they get the means to set up the shipping containers for the seperate gliders ? Then get them from the ports to the air field , for reassembly ?
$4000 both ways or one way?? Very impressive packaging of the container, nicely done!!
Both ways
That is a good price! Thinking of buying a glider or 2 in Germany, it is good to know how much and how to do it! thanks
@@SteFly
@@Normski2009 The complete container costs about 24.000 € both ways. So if you only have one glider to ship it will be very expensive.
That is true! Ouch,... was hoping to find others who are interested in getting a glider from Germany to the US. So, I guess 6 in total would be ideal. And to the US is less distance than Australia.
Now, I only need to find some good glider deals in Good (c)old Germany :) Thanks for your input and knowledge! @@SteFly
@@Normski2009 We are already planning for the 18 m WGC next year in Texas and there we will just put our trailer on the ship. It's more affordable and easier for us than packing it into the container.
Stefan, a cute girl appears at 7:14 on the bottom left, who is she? 😁
What?? You didn't glide across the ocean?? Just get a container ship lined with hot plates to follow underneath you.
😂
Wow, this is a rich person's hobby. Love the content though.
Well, it ma seem like it, but basically every sport is a rich persons hobby if you go pro. This is not something, that the average pilot will do on his career. You can’t say, that gliding in gerneral is a rich persons hobby, because you can fly for affordable money in clubs. Its really only the oversea competitions that are that expensive, everything else is more affordable. But how i said, every sport gets expensive if you‘re at a world competition.
@@frxnziska_maria Thanks for filming! 7:28 was funny :D
No way would I ship my fuselage and wings like that without additional covers and protective wrappings.
The surface was still the same after the trip to Australia. No salt or sand on the wings and fuselage.
That music is annoying, like the sound of tourettes.
