  • BB55 crew member Lou Popovich was in the R Division (Hull) post-war and explains damage control on the Battleship. Lou’s duties included maintaining and operating the #2 pump room, taking soundings throughout the ship, and conducting pressure tests of compartments to insure watertight integrity.

    The U.S. Navy took Damage Control to a whole new level. This is a great example.

    Caption says Lou served "post-war" - well, "Showboat" was put into mothballs real soon after VJ Day. And anyone serving at that time would be 90 today or close to it. When was this taped?

      She was mothballed in 1947. She was went on at least one midshipmen training cruise after the war. I think a lot of these were filmed in the late 90s.

    North Carolina took a torpedo somewhere on the bow during the war. How did Damage Control patch the hole or keep the ship from listing, er capsizing? Sorry if I used incorrect terms.

      The hatches leading to the flooded spaces were shored up with wood to provide extra support against the water pressure, ie, to prevent further flooding.
      Various void spaces on the starboard side were flooded to put the ship on an even keel. This process is called counterflooding.
      The ship steamed under her own power back to Pearl Harbor for repairs which was performed in the amazingly short period of 21 days. the ship is compartmented so the crew can seal off flooded areas. You counterflood to put the Ship on an even keel and slowly move the Ship to a place where it can be repaired. Damage to the bow is a problem because it severely limits how fast you can move the Ship. Our damage was to the side of the Ship but you still have to watch the speed so as not to put undue pressure on temporary damage repairs.
