It's deeply regrettable that no British battleships were preserved as museum ships: I think it was considered economically not viable in the early 1960's when HMS Vanguard (on which my father served as a signalman on her first commission) was scrapped. All we've got is a late 1930's light cruiser, HMS Belfast, moored in the River Thames in the centre of London. It's quite impressive but nothing like the size of a battleship. A holiday in the USA and a visit to one of the museum battleships is definitely on my "bucket list".

The USS New Jersey is my favorite ship. It's in camden New Jersey
As I always say with passenger ships from those days they look much better than modern ones and this also applies to battleships !
Yeah ... July 1, 1963. We had donated our dimes when I was in elementary school to buy it for the state. We went by and I got to play on it. That was fun. You could man the actual positions on the 40mm's and take over a 20mm. I carried a souvenir pocket knife from the NC in my pocket for most of my life.

I remember being really surprised they let you onto the 40mm Bofors mounts, and that they still worked.
@@BrigadierBill Yeah. I wasn't surprised when I was 11 years old but thinking back on it I am. Of course this was a different country in 1963. I don't know if you can still do that. If lawyers got involved that might put an end to it.

Takes two people to move one (one vertical one horizontal), but they work amazingly well for 80-year-old relics.

The NC wasn't a gift. We bought it. School kids donated their lunch money to save that bit of history from the scrap yard.
The NC was the only Battleship in the USN at the beginning of the war.
She has 15 battle stars and participated in every major campaign in the Pacific war.
That's more Battlestars than any Battleship involved in WWII.
15! Count them...
And, apologize to the brave men who served on that piece of American History.
When it comes to large naval guns, caliber represents barrel length in relation to projectile size, not projectile size itself. In this instance, the projectiles are 16”, with barrel length 45 times 16”, or 60’ long.

Great vid. I live in Raleigh, my brother and his family live in Leland, NC, about 10 minutes from the battleship, so I have been there a few times and drive by it every time I go to visit him and my nieces. Much effort has been made over the years to make as many parts of the ship accessible as possible. However, the continued decay of the lower hull that has sat in the silt of the Cape Fear River for five decades continues to threaten the integrity of the North Carolina. Donations are always being sought to maintain this national treasure.
I have heard that, years ago, the USS North Carolina was removed from her mooring across the river from downtown Wilmington-a great little city, BTW-for repairs to the lower hull. This is no longer possible because a bridge now stands just downstream that the battleship cannot pass under. The word is that the lower hull could no longer withstand being moved anyway, so the only way to keep her from flooding is very careful diving repair crews, after equally careful dredging. Expensive stuff, but well worth it to preserve a living piece of history.
Thank you very much Christopher, for bringing awareness to the continued efforts to preserve her. We hope our video plays a part in introducing the USS North Carolina to people across the country, so that the continued visitors and donations will help ensure that people for generations to come can experience this important part of our history.

Do you mean you reenlisted on the NC? Because it was decommissioned in 1947 and if you were reenlisted in 86 there is no way you served on the NC. Maybe you mean an Iowa class BB

The USS North Carolina was the most decorated battleship in WWII, with 15 battlestars and served thru the whole war. This should have been the ship parked in Tokyo Bay, not the Missouri, but Truman was from Missouri. It was the very first fast battleship.

I went with my family back in 2013 during a trip to visit my aunt. By far one of the coolest places I have ever visited! I'd like to return but unfortunately I don't think my kids are quite old enough to understand or handle the hours worth of walking and climbing

His first sea duty was aboard the USS North Carolina and his writing brings that BIG HANDSOME SHIP to LIFE. PROFOUND THANKS TO ALL U.S. SERVICE PERSONNEL DURING "THE WAR" !!! THAT ship and THAT generation of Americans, were The BEST...PERIOD !

I think, if you will check your history, you not find that the battleship was not given as a GIFT to the state, but millions of school kids gave pennies, nickels and dimes and many other folks all across the state gave dollars to help obtain the ship and turn it into a museum.

After inactivation, North Carolina was decommissioned at New York on 27 June 1947. Stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 June 1960, she was transferred to the state of North Carolina on 6 September 1961. The brainchild of James S. Craig, the "Showboat" was purchased from the U.S. Navy for $330,000 raised by the efforts of North Carolina school children, who saved their spare change and lunch money for the "Save Our Ship" campaign

You are thinking correctly. There is a lot of history that we would have loved to speak about in this video. As Road Trip Story grows, I hope that we can work closely with historic sites, historians, and teachers to produce videos with a greater depth and tell a more comprehensive story. We would love to be able to go into a lot more depth in our videos. We pay for making these videos from our own pockets on our own time, and through the process, you are right, we could do better. The "Save Our Ship" campaign was well organized and brought in donations from citizens across the state, totaling $330,000, a portion of which was provided by donations from school children. As a result, the Battleship was transferred from the Navy to the State of North Carolina, and unto the citizens of North Carolina, for the purpose of serving as a memorial to the thousands of North Carolinians who lost their lives in the war. Davey Peacock The money paid was for preparing the site ($100,000), conditioning the ship for display ($100,000), and towing it to Wilmington ($50,000). It would be inaccurate to say that the ship was "purchased" from the Navy, as it was not "for sale". You could say the ship was "provided" to the State, "given" to the State, or "transferred" to the State, and therefore, to the people of North Carolina. We can discuss semantics, but we apologize for not going into detail in the video, about the transfer of the ship from the Navy to the State of North Carolina. What inaccuracies did you find in the video? It concerns me that you found "a lot". Thank you for helping to set the record straight.
Also when describing the ammunition of the large guns it's appropriate to say "16inch/45 caliber" rather than just 45 caliber.
roadtripstory also the analog fire control "computers" on the IOWA class battleships were upgraded in the 1950's and again in the 1980's. So in the 1990's, while still using analog components, they were not the same "computers" used during their WWII service.

The ship was never given to NC. the money raised was to pay for moving the ship to NC. The ship is still the property of the United States Navy on loan to NC. of all the 8 Battle ships the Texas BB 35 is the only one owned my the state. most war ships are still the property of the USN
