    Was last on board as they were building the new walkways.... can’t wait to visit her again in another month or two. I have been aboard many times, always a great experience from when I was a kid to now as an adult and bringing my own children.

    Boy has that area changed since I lived in North Carolina. I’ve been on board her many times. I left NC in 1995. Back then she was still floating in water.

    • @cherokee43v6

      Actually, she's been silted in for decades. The cofferdam is a temporary fixture while they perform restoration work on the metal at her waterline and /finally/ properly repair the torpedo damage that was hurriedly repaired in 1942 to get her back in the fight and was never fully fixed.
      Originally they were going to drag her out of the mud and tow her up to Norfolk for drydocking to do this work, but funding shortfalls meant that they had to come up with an alternate plan. They still want to get her up there for a proper hull inspection and to get the mud scraped from her and I believe they want to dredge out her mooring slip so she is actually free-floating again.

    I remember as a kid in the 1980's when visiting the Battleship there was a huge Alligator that lived in the slip where the battleship is berthed. On the bow if you looked down on the starboard side of the ship you could see it on the shore or in the water. I wonder what happened to it.

      @@deejayimm Well it is a bit odd that the video is 3:48 in length and the first real view of the title object doesn’t happen until 1:00 which is roughly 26% into the video. Then the last shot of the ship is around 3:10. So 40% of the video doesn’t show the ship. Also the font settings makes the text difficult to read.

      @deejayimm 3 роки тому +1

      @@chrisb9960 there is no correct or incorrect way to make a UA-cam video, if you don't like the way a particular video was made, that is a you problem, not a video problem.
      It is impossible for someone to make a video that will make every single person who watches it happy, so if there's something about a video that you don't like, it's not the videos fault.
      It's that sense of entitlement that everyone seems to have nowadays, people have forgotten that their opinion is only relevant to themselves.
      It's fine to share an opinion, hell I would love it if the rest of the world would actually speak openly, even if it is only your opinion, but the second that you start to get rude about it, you're just being a selfish jerk.

    A grand and majestic looking lady sitting there sleeping.
    I have a question, I see she is sitting in the mud a fair way. Does she still have her screws and rudders fitted, or were they removed some time in the past?
    I have had the privilege of visiting the Missouri a few years ago in Pearl Harbor, and would love to see many more museum ships one day, its a bucket list item.
    Not so easy for me though as I live in Australia.

    LMAO just looking at how much mud is around N. Carolina; makes Ryan the Curator of the New Jersey's opinion that IF the navy was desperate for battleships that the NC would be called back before the Massachusetts seem more than a bit far fetched. Massy is at least free floating.
    Great vid. My only suggestion would be in the future to lower the volume of the music you add. Even with my speaker turned way down low it was a bit much.

    • @robertthomas5906
      @robertthomas5906 3 роки тому

      I think Ryan is right. The Mass is in bad shape with the hull. I sent them money a number of years ago so they could weld more steel so it wouldn't sink. Big maint job a few years back. I've been aboard both ships though decades apart. However they'd have to be hard up to use either one. They may pull the 16" guns though. They take a while to make new ones and I don't think they can make them in Washington DC anymore. That's where they were made. Looks like it's NC's time for some hull work.
      The one is really in dilapidated shape is the Texas. Don't need a naval gun to sink that ship. It springs leaks on its own. Very bad shape.

      Ryan said that due to the design differences the USS NC is larger and has more space and is more sea worthy in terms of design hence why the Navy decommissioned the South Dakota’s before the North Carolina’s

    • @HaddaClu
      @HaddaClu 3 роки тому

      @@carolinadog8634 I know that, but that same video he was say which ships he thought would be brought back first if the navy was desperate. Considering the Massy is free floating and wouldnt require having her mast and part of her superstructure removed to get under several bridges built after she was made a museum (This was / is the case for Carolina and in several articles is said to be the reason why they are doing the repairs in place). Also the Massy had a more recent drydocking and has a better over all condition.

      The mud actually helps the preservation of the hull. It keeps out the oxygen which is what causes the rust in the first place. it also supports the ship so it doesnt compress under it's own weight.

    Ok ,question. The ship is sitting in mudd,if there isn't blocks under the kneel,what is eventually gonna keep her from listing a little on her port or starboard, I'm asking this cause the ground moves over time,I know tanks can be flooded to make up the difference. Do y'all do test on the bottom to see if her hull isn't rotting in the underside,?be cool to see a vidio just on this subject.
