  • Joe Camel is infamously known for tricking kids into smoking cigarettes, but how did it happen? What is the story behind this innocent-looking cartoon camel? Today I’m going to be deep-diving into the entire story of Joe Camel, the cartoon mascot Camel cigarettes employed in the 1980s that promoted underage smoking. This one simple marketing campaign has quite the bizarre history to it…

Do your research and use a few of your own brain cells next time. Anyone who was a kid through this knows that the caricature was intentionally and effectively off-putting to kids. Captain Morgan on the other hand was blatant child bait; and kids stuck with Marlboro Reds. Phillip Morris execs found Joe appealing and therefore a threat; hence the nonsense lobbying.
Maybe formulate an actual thought for your next video.

I grew up in Germany. My grandfather was into playing Lotto. So, every week, when my parents took my grandparents grocery shopping (neither one of my grandparents had a driver's license) I stuck with my grandfather, who went to a dodgy lottery shop with a spotted, dark green carpet. The walls were plastered with Camel posters. Bottom to top, nothing but Joe Camel posters. Yet the one that always got my attention was the one next to the cigarettes, right behind the counter. The OG Camel logo, with the palm tree and the pyramid. I, to this day, love everything about this logo. The classic feel. The sense of adventure. The feeling of entering an exotic world, forever trapped in a 1920s-esque Egypt. My four-year old, archeology and paleontology books fuelled mind went nuts for this logo.
I smoked for a while. Mostly pipes and cigars. Cigarettes never did it for me. The tobacco never tasted right. But I never became a full on smoker. Haven't smoked one in 2 years.

@@texanarchy666 Nicotine is harmful, gives addiction. The nicotine's quantity in stick/in a vaping device is usually higher than that there is in a common cigarette, being more damaging to the heart and with additional potential damages from chemical flavors. Vapor is less harmful than smoke but it's still harmful. It would've been better if men never knew this drug.

    • @fasol1998
      @fasol1998 2 місяці тому

@@texanarchy666Vaping reduced most unpleasant parameters but not the harm from nicotine. IMO cigarettes give a smoker some kind of discipline. Cigarette smoke has bad taste and smell, it's very hot so that it can burn a smoker's throat and lungs, smoking cigarettes is related to using open fire so it requires finding a special place and spending some time to smoke the whole dose of sauced tobacco waste wrapped in a piece of paper presoaked in nitrates. Vaping devices instead offer candy and fruit flavoured liquids that "sort of" are not that unpleasant. Vapers also don't need to smoke the whole cigarette, they just take a couple of drags instantly. With instant access to nicotine and all unpleasant factors removed vapers consume MOAR and MOAR of nicotine than regular smokers and they'll never get enough. The worst thing about this less-harm-BS is that vapers don't even think that someone around may not like it. They fill the whole damn space around them with their urinal-odorant-flavoured vapor and DGAF that people around don't want to breathe it in. I'm allready tired making remarks to all those teenagers vaping inside public transport. The whole vape and HNB industry is made to stop smokers quitting and also to make non-smokers smoke. We may have heard how early feminists were fighting to let women smoke. Now what I see is alcohol, vape and HNB industry targeting especially women and children by using colourful pics and bright attractive design. A vaping device can be shaped like a cool gadget or like a kids' toy for example. But men are also targeted. The sole reason of tobacco companies agressively promoting HNB and vapes was a serious decline in regular cigarettes popularity. I remember, when IQOS appeared, their agents in malls would offer this crap to every person passing by. I remember how several times they tried to offer it to me (a male non-smoker). I see my friend "trying to quit smoking" by switching to IQOS (and I'm sure he won't quit in such a way).
So IMO there are several rules:
      1. If you don't want to smoke don't try it at all. DO NOT VAPE.
      2. If you want to quit smoking, quit completely. DO NOT VAPE.
      3. If you still want to smoke, smoke for real. DO NOT VAPE.
Just don't submit to "less harm" lies. Nicotine is harmful by itself. It damages your vessels, heart, brain and the rest of the body. There is no harmless way to consume nicotine.
As a non-smoker I would rather prefer a legal ban on vaping and HNB products than a legal ban on regular cigarettes. Cigarettes were already declining until vapes refreshed the industry.

Nothing about Joe Camel appealed to kids.
On the flip side, I always found that swarthy pirate Captain Morgan to be appealing as a kid. He's not the reason that it was the first rum that I tried though; my neighbor already had the bottle open; but nonetheless, that's the rum that all of the kids drank with their Marlboro Reds.

Years ago, within my group of friends, we had this one guy we nicknamed 'Joe Camel' because of his striking resemblance to the character; the likeness was a spitting image.

Honestly, a cartoon character encouraging kids to pick up a cigarette is kinda like the least of anyone’s worries these days. RJ Reynolds marketing research is no different than any other big business out there to make money. Can’t blame someone for just playing the same game everyone is playing. But hey, at least Joe Camel made smoking fun.

Wow I nearly forgotten about Joe Camel. I remember seeing the ads everywhere when I was very young until they suddenly disappeared when I was 7-8.

It didn’t work for me because I never developed a tobacco addiction.

The German version looked even better.
I never smoked cigarettes, but I collected some of the advertisement things, like posters and business cards with my name.
I guess it’s the duty of the parents to make their kids resistant to advertisement.

It's always the same thing. We need to get rid of this or that because "no think of the children!!!" bitch how bout you raise your kids properly instead and tell em whats what, got damn

About Parents and kids smoking, someone said something like,"My Mother was a heavy smoker when I was a child. I thought smoking looked cool and I kept begging her to let me smoke too. Finally, she had enough and let me take a drag. That drag was one of the NASTIEST things I had ever had happen to me. I gagged and coughed. Mom told me,"I hope that horrible drag of a cigarette taught you a VERY valuable life lesson." It did and I never smoked again and never will."

And yet years after the ads were banned kids still continue to smoke. Almost seems like theres a minimal connection if any.

As a 6 year old back then in the 90s, i was collecting the joe camel matches. The matches had the cool art. I used to collect them like baseball cards. my favorite was the one where he was on a motorbike, reminded me of the terminator. I highly doubt however i would want a Tshirt or a hat or some Joe Toy, i just liked collecting the matches. I remember being disappointed that there weren't any new camel joe arts on matches but i had no idea as a child that it was gone forever, otherwise i wouldn't have thrown away those pristine matches when i got bored of them later in life.

it's not a problem of cigarette companies reaching to children, it's a problem of parenting and education

Interesting Observation--- During the 1970's, I was an officer in the Huntington Beach jail--- We observed that anyone with Unfiltered Camel Cigarettes had done time in either state or federal prison.

Interesting how accurately they manage to depict the average “cool” person in school:
    -smokes
    -big mouth
    -small brain
all this is reflected in Joe’s appearance
    (I am sorry Joe)
