    Wow the beginning was very special and invokes alot of spirit Wairua, the sound will encapulate you as it is literally a Maori Mantra.The ladies are acknowledging all of the waka (boats) that came to Aotearoa (New Zealand) that seeded alot of the tribes and there chieftains. This is reserved for special occasions. As a Maori, I was suspended in animation and could not move till the ladies finished that part!

    I'm so pleased to see young folks carrying on the culture of their ancestors. Too many countries are losing theirs to make place to "progress".

    Beautiful performance, epitomising the biculturalism of Aotearoa NZ. Makes me so happy to see this evolution. When I sang in high school and university 20 years ago, maori culture wasn't so visible or embraced in competitions etc. So awesome to see that that this has changed!!!

Thanks for the respect of our people as our Prime Minister would do, but I would LOVE our lady Adern learn our Poi or our Haka as she has already seen. as has already got most of our respect*

    Have anyone ever seen an explanation of the hand movements?

    • @maorivillian1777
      @maorivillian1777 7 років тому +4

      The wiri-quiver of the hands also means we're alive. Wiri with action brings the story they are telling you alive exactly like sign language.

    • @TechnikMeister2
      @TechnikMeister2 6 років тому +7

      Every NZ child, Maori or not studies Maori culture and is immersed in it. The hand movements are to tell the story. It can be a wedding song, sending the men off to battle, blessing the sun and fruit of the land, saying farewell, welcoming home... There is a Maori song for each event. Along with song there are also the Poi dances with the long and short poi. Its truly wonderful. I can say this. I was married to a NZ lady for 26 years and so my kids are half kiwi. If for some reason I had to move to another country, I would choose NZ. Its a beautiful country with beautiful people.

      It is also artistic mimicry of the fantail bird or tiwaiwaka, among other things. The fantail is regarded as a messenger from between the spiritual and physical worlds.

    • @Geenine44
      @Geenine44 3 роки тому

      @@TechnikMeister2 there is absolutely no immersion happening on the scale you’re describing. If only. Yet Tangata whenua have been battling for this for decades.
