I'm Samoan. They performed this in Cook Island Maori when I was in college in 1980s. Started off with Kia orana 🎶🎶 Always loved this song. Grew up around a lot of Maori and listening to lots of traditional waiatas. Always brings happy memories to me.
I grew up in the Waikato and BOP. I've lived abroad for 20+ years. I still love the songs and Te Reo I learnt as a boy. Proud of my land and people, there really is nothing like Aotearoa. Peace.
My brother passed away in NZ after being there for 3 years. He loved it and loved being there with his kiwi parter. He's coming back to Liverpool to be laid to rest and I'm going to play this at his interment with his partner by my side as a last NZ goodbye 😢
I'm Tokelauan,Rarotongan,Samoan and german. My Tokelauan is the most spoken korero spoken at home. Born and raised in Aoutearoa and find Rarotongan and Tokelau are the closest language to te reo. My nan and mum loved waita Maori because they understood word for word and would translate and sing these waita in their own reo. So beautiful.
Tokelau is closest to Samoan and Tuvaluan. Toke has some old consonants and the original proto Polynesian K which is found in Maori and was once in Samoan which is why Maori is understood to a degree.
Being a Samoan growing up in Kapa haka this still feels like my culture lol the live ins, haka offs, kapas the hangis! Miss it all such a beautiful culture
Us Maoris and you Samoans are really the same ppl we both polys who branch off from Hawaii, our ancestors would always visit each other, trade and help each other, ye we from the same waka
Tena koutou. Thanks for sharing. My young daughters liked listening. Was thinking about Nana and this song just stayed in my head all day. My favourite song to sing as a kid. Beautiful
Hi Carlos. I'm about the same with you on this. Roughly 15years so long aye we sang this in our kapahaka performance. Now I forget how to pronounce the waiata properly..,🙄 my daughter reckons i sound like a Pākehā 🤦 ASHAMED OF myself tbh. Should be well tuned by now at my age.. I'm sorry
Beautiful music and dance! I have been twice in Hawaii and enjoyed polynesian music/dance in the polynesian cultural center (Oahu), luaus, etc, and could discover this music. Everytime I heard/see this music/dance, it comes to my mind sea, wind, coconut trees, happy people fishing, singing and dancing. Congratulations to keep alive these traditions!
Beautiful Maori culture. No one could ever imagine how many amazing and unique beauty the native Americans can show to the world, if their countries and tribes are still there.
I remember learning this when I was in Māori culture group at primary school I’m a cocongati but this waiata has stayed always stayed with me ever since then and when I here this at Māori parties it takes me way back to those days Tumeke alright chur ma Māoris👍

How could anyone down vote this video? It's beautiful. Don't have to understand the words at all. Maori music is powerful once it gets going. It's like the heartbeat of the earth, the flow of the waters and wind together, absolutely in harmony! Beautiful and thank you for posting this!
We have to learn this song for prize giving. And I am working so hard because it is my country. I am sure we will do a wonderful job. This is a very inspiring song. I must learn the moves along with the song. 🙂
I remember back in year 6 whenever the Māori group got up to preform this. And at the last part of the haka, all the boys in the school would put their toughest Māori accent and sing along “RUA ANA TE WHENUA WHATI ANA HI!!” I miss that time
I love this song, though I listened to the Hawaiian version. Either version is still beautiful, and it’s awesome to see the same song being performed on the opposite side of the pacific
Why don’t we have people around this world show this !!! So many different races and so many beautiful songs !!! Why are we still fighting race ??? I will never understand it !!! So much beautiful music and food out there !!! Sorry !!! Anthony Bourdain quote !!!
I have travelled to Aotearoa Land of the long white cloud. And did many cultural exchanges from Hawaiian to Maori. Very grateful to have gone to the Marae and meet the elders in spirit and in person ❤❤❤
I remember singing this waiata when I was younger but I am sure we sang a part that said "Kurahaupo te waka...". Is this a regional version for a different iwi?
Hello, my name is Mauricio and I'm from Buenos Aires Argentina. After watching this video, I was very interested in both the song and the dance, since I see that it has things in common with that of my Japanese ancestors. Can you tell me where I can find out about this song and the meanings of the dance movements? And if they are so kind, what is the name of the young lady who dances in the second place, from left to right, since she is very beautiful. thank you very much.
I love it especially when I am A Silveradale school person well I’m practically a student but I just love Kapa haka it’s literally my favorite thing but sometimes I don’t really look forward to it mostly when I am younger when I was younger I used to love it When I was year 1 I embraced my spirit and Kapa haka
