I repotted one with piece of bed plank and gave it to my oldest human seedling. It gives me a good excuse to visit her once a week. I bring 4 liters of rainwater for her fussy plants each time. It's beginning to look good in her little home. She told me that she spends more time there, now that it feels like her hyggelige childhood home. Plants can do amazing things to ones wellbeing
That mold is actually a type of beneficial fungus and a very good sign if you have this in your pots. It's called mykorrhiza and has lots of good effects on your plant.
I've had the green/yellow mold in my lipstick plant. I was ready to give up on it, until I found an old book called: my plant is sick. It told me to put some rusty nails in the soil. It actually worked. It's still not that bushy as yours, but it's doing much better!
My monsteras had thrips and I had to throw away all of them except two leafs to propagate. They have roots now and no thrips. I’m so happy it survived.
Your videos are always informative and your humour is brilliant, so enjoyable to watch. The only plant channel that is educational and makes me LOL at the same time. 😂
Great video! I have some type of philodendron of a similar size as your Monstera but I don't have the space to *only* show its 'pretty side'. I'm glad you addressed the drainage holes situation - 9:32 - as I didn't see a drip tray for your plant. Kudos on your 10-year plant dad journey. I'm currently at 12 years with my plant parenting!
The image of you hugging the Monstera was hilarious. That's how I felt when I started buying them. My monstera in lechuza pon, I damaged part of the stem by accident so I am glad that it is growing and thriving.
My grandparents had a gorgeous monstera growing up the trunk of a coconut palm in their Miami, Florida USA backyard. It definitely grows as a vine when it can, and your video gives ample proof of that, It also gets nice and bushy if it has proper light. (Yous is beautiful.)
If you can't provide drainage, airate with a pencil so the roots are still getting oxygen! Second, if your pot is otherwise ok for the plant, you can take a drill and drill a hole without removing the plant, the counter pressure of the plant pressing on the pot should prevent the pot from breaking. Similarly some ppl will submerge an empty plot and drill it when it's full of water for the same counter pressure. If you're going to do that though, make sure you've got a suitable backup pot just in case! I've 3 in my pot and i know i should separate them but then i see the largest of them and think I'll need to get s second home for them if i do.
Another issue with having multiple plants in one pot and not managing them properly is that one or two will grow really well, and end up overshadowing the rest. I repotted a very cramped monstera a few years, and even tho all the stems reacted very well to it, some of them ended up beneath the biggest leaves and not growing as well. They pretty much end up competing for light and nutrients as they are not really sharing like one single plant would. So I think 2-3 plants at max and making sure they all get proper positioning and light is key to get good looking and happy plants
Informative, well edited, and your sense of humour makes the video all the more enjoyable - the psychologist session with the Monstera was 'deliciosa' ;)
I noticed that the new leaves were babies. Fortunately, I don't hack the mama up too much, so it's okay. I had a monstera in a pot outside that had a giant aerial root (maybe 4 ft), and I cut that section to propagate. I've just planted the mama under a tree, and I'm excited to have it climb up like the pothos and syngonium do around here. I popped the cutting in a giant vase, and that giant root didn't fit lol. I also have some cuttings that I've left perpetually in water, and it's cool to see the roots and new leaves through the vase. There's a reason Monsteras are so popular 💚
I've had a big monstera for almost 2 years now. She's my unruly child compared to my other plants. I'm learning to be a better plant mom thanks to her. My next plan is to create some new potted monstera babies out of her !
Lots of good information and advice. The monstera is one of my favorite plants and I’m not sure what to do with it because it was getting so big. I hate to cut it but I think I must.
I got my first Monstera a couple of months ago, with your previous tips of not doing much with it, keeping clean and the right position it pushed out a new leaf from its largest growth. The leaf was huge and holey. I'm really happy with it.
About your beautiful big Monstera in the orange plastic pot - you could possibly just drill the holes without moving the plant and find a big saucer/plate/tray to put underneath. I'd think the damage to the roots would be minimal, but totally worth it.
I absolutely ❤ U mentioning Lee @KillThisPlant!! U two are my favorite & are my go to's for ALL of the Monstera advice & troubleshooting. Ive had my Monstera for a little over 2 yrs now.(2yrs & 3 months to be exact) I got it on my bday, it was a gift from My fella. But Lee is awesome & So are U Mr. Sheffield! Thank U for the videos.
If you want to keep it in the pot, why not add holes to the bottom with either a drill or sodder iron? Just a thought. I recently bought a cheap sodder iron so I could by cheap plastic pots from the dollar store and add drainage holes. They look better than the nursery pots and don’t need a decorative pot.
When I cut my Monstera Albo the next leaf turned out to be a lot bigger than the previous leaves. I think that If you give your plant a lot of light it will usually size up.
I remember our monstera before we moved. It was nearly 2qm in the old place. It had the PERFECT spot. We had to move house and the plant got cold and we couldn't find the right place and in the end it started dying. I cut it down and gave it to a doctor at the clinic I work. It has a nice corner in a bright büro and seems to recover after two years now.
Monsteras refuse to die. I have one that has been through two divorces, been overwatered and not watered for months, had all its leaves burnt by full sun exposure, fertilized every week and not fertilized for years, pot bound and repotted, the list goes on.

Just preparing Monty for fall, he’s been very happy, but become a bit overwhelming. I almost cut him back like I do my others when moving them inside. I just had to cut down my too tall monstera albo. Not only is the mother plant making 2 (!) new shoots, all 3 cuttings from the top part have nice roots and new growth. Feeling lucky 😊
It was emotionally soooo hard task to do, but I had to get rid of the two top leaves of my Monstera. :( They started yellowing, since it took me too long to give it a bigger pot. The roots literally started to escape the pot. Reason: warm autumn temperatures here in Finland and my summer flowers just bloomed and bloomed and the pot they were in, was ment to go to my monstera after removing summer flowers. Well, it is still interesting to find out how the Monstera will start to grow. It wont reach the roof too soon, I quess. Eventually I need to cut it again. Will be too expensive to move to a location with higher rooms. :D
Hi there! I'm an old plant lover, but had to limit my plant life desperatly for much of my adult life for various ressons. I've recently become a plant parent again & FINALLY got my own Monstera. I've wanted one since childhood!! Supposed to be deliciosa, but idk. The pot had 5 juvenile plantlets, so I believe they were mere seedlings. Anyway, she's been w/ me for just over a year & she's done well considering our lighting isn't great.(IDKY, but I've had little luck w/ plants in this house since I moved in!) Seems remember you saying yours is 6 ft from a window, something else a few feet out, etc. I had her about 3 ft from a south facing window, on top of a stack of stereo speakers. Recently, i got cheap lights from Temu. Don't know if they work yet. Then a couple of weeks ago I had to move her for a minute & dropped her! 😱 One broke & much of the soil at the top poured out. What should I have done right then? What I DID do was to put the broken one in water & had two 1 inch roots within a week! I replaced the soil the best I could & tied her to a small moss pole. A few days ago, one of the smaller plants which didn't get re-covered deeply enough to stand solid, broke just a hair below the soil, so she's in water, too. The main plant(s) seems to be "OK" but nothing like she was. A couple of leaves were damaged & I believe will die, but otherwise she's just weak & wobbly. Do you have any advice for me? How long must I wait from seedling to fenestrations? I'm impatient b/c I'd like to see some before I die! Same thing for my epiphyllums blooming! I'm 67 & in poor health, sooo.... Plants & books are "my thing"! OBTW, IDK whether you have experience w/ cactus, I don't recall seeing any, but I'd appreciate tips if you have any! I ordered large, thorn free prickly pear pads this Spring, for outside. They've been laying on top of dry potting soil but haven't put out roots. Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong? This seems to be a problem for me w/ most succulents. I do as I read, but most cuttings shrivel up & die before roots show up! Am I just too good at ignoring them??😁 Thanks for your time & for putting out your videos free for folks like me! I love to watch them! Lee's as well! I sure appreciate you!
It can take a few months to start seeing fenestrations. Depends if it’s got enough light which sounds like it does. If the original plant is in a bad shape it’s probably best to focus on the cuttings you’ve made
So i inherited a gigantiv monstera. And i think it developed roots even at the top of the plant. I would like to trim it so not as wild. Im just wondering what i can do to make it look more beautiful and getting rid of all the extra dtems and roots. Thanks for your help
Can you tell me what monstera that is to the right of the big momma lol at 4:26 I think I have her and everyone keeps saying it's an andessoni which I already have, but they look completely different.
Lesson learned. I did this and my Monstera is putting out unfenestrated leaves. However, I don't even mind, it's still quite beautiful. But, I will not be doing THAT again. 💚💚💚
You're lucky at least you still have yours😢. I brought one home years ago it had one tiny leaf, it grew very quickly and touched the ceiling. 😮 I had to give him away to a place that had two story high for the ceiling.🥹 I still miss him but where I am now my ceillings are even lower.☹️
@@SheffieldMadePlants He was full and bushy and I don't remember how many leaves, but his new leaves 😔 were bending along the ceiling, short of opening the window and letting him continue outside the building, what could I do? I'm in Quebec so that wouldn't have worked for the winter ❄️ One little leaf, I told myself how big can he get? When he was a baby he sat on the coffee table 😂😭
Can we all just take a second to appreciate Mr.Sheffields jokes please😂😂😂😂My favourite was" Nubes, not Boobs"has to be my favourite coz he's not a millennial😂😂
That was so entertaining and informative, thank you! My monstera has a lot of super duper long aerial roots. I don't currently have it staked (but I will do that today!) so do I just try to wrap those roots back up the new stake? Thank you! :)
I was really surprised when after not watering my indoor monstera for a few weeks, it put out a giant leaf with tons of fenestrations. It goes to show that they really don't need too much fussing over. Granted, I live in the tropics so it has plenty of warm, humid air to thrive on, so results may vary. The only thing I regret is buying one that already had a sideways growth on one of the main stems, so I have been trying to deal with that as it is trying to grow on the corner of the room walls 😂 Said beautiful new leaf is on the sideways stem.
Thanks for the video & tips. At 3:31 there is something visible in the pot; is that a clay vessel? I would live to pot mine up with an olla like that, if it works well.
I have a huge one and all the leafs are massive but got damaged in the storm but the and roots are great. I don’t want to propagate it or cut the main stem at at all BUT I want a pretty plant - If pull/cut off the leaves only -- will it push a new *large leaf?
Hi I have the monstera( swiss cheese ) plant growing in a pot inside and growing up a support screen in my entrance lobby. Problem is it has become tall but sparse leaves on it. I want it to be tall but how do i get the stem to grow enough leaves with shoots spreading everywhere? I want a monstera cover. I get light from my double ceiling windows some 20 ft away
i have three monsteras in one pot since about 10 years. , repotted 3 times. It is growing tall, lots of leaves, but almost no windows. I think one of the vines is about 3m long 😅 I think I need to shorten it, what do you think?
Omg the stories I have with my monstera as well 😅…i stunted its growth so bad causing it to develop a mini mature leaf. Then it reverted to juvenile. Probably the worst thing I did was put it in a super sized pot bc it looked nice and filling it with 100% garden soil! 😂 ultra root rot and fungus gnats. To finish it off, I put it in a dark corner with a tiny ring light 😂. Today it looks amazing now with huge leaves.
Got any Deliciosa or just Borinsagna... or however you spell it lol I have 8 "small form" or borinsagna monstera before I got a real deliciosa. The ones you buy at the garden center are small form borinsagna.
Your voice sounds deeper here are you well? All good points here per usual. But the part that demands the most world-wide attention is, why can't somebody make inner pots with drainage holes, that fit perfectly inside outer decorative pots with no holes, that you want solid, where you don't have to drill holes and deal with unsightly shallow watering trays underneath?
I have a monstera that I purchased a few months back. It came with 3 full leaves, but one of them was split on one side, and the spine snapped in the middle, a second was deformed and produced another deformed leaf. The plant is green and healthy, with no signs of dying. My question is, do I cut the broken and deformed leaves off (if yes, where) or leave them?
Great video Sheff! 2 monstera questions; now I know you use the self watering stakes now, but when you were watering, did you let the monstera dry all the way out or keep it moist? I've heard conflicting info regarding this. Also, whats your hot take on monsteras liking to be root bound? Do you keep yours tight or let it groove? I recently had repotted my lil albo into a pot 1-2 inches bigger than the root ball...and in 5 weeks that sucker was so rootbound in its new pot i had to upsize already! Seems repotting that much would be detrimental? Thanks again for all the info mate, your wisdom and humor have made me a better plant parent.💕
I made the same mistake with my Monstera, not giving it something to climb up to. Now I need to prune the biggest, longest stem with beautiful leaves. Not looking forward to it but it has to be done I guess. Gonna put it on water and hope for the best. I just want my Monstera to be much more vertical instead of the mess it is I made of it now.
My monstera keeps growing new leaves but then they turn yellow and die. Also the tips get crinkly and gray. I really want to help it but don't know what to do. Not all leaves are affected so I've been just cutting the leaves that are (hopefully this is not a bad thing to do) and hoping for the best
Can I cut the long roots growing off the potted plant or just let them be? I just added bamboo stakes since I watched this but I have really long shoots coming off of it and I’m just not sure what to do with them. Thanks in advance!

Sitting here watching this video while staring at my monstera cutting that I had to chop completely off again because of yellowing leaves- but it's sprouting 4 new stems?! Do I have some plant magic going on I didn't know about??
Hi! Your videos are very cool and useful. Thanks! However, I have not found an answer to my question about my monster growing as an epipremnum. It just keeps going up, and I'm not sure what to do about it. Could you please help me?
@@SheffieldMadePlants I'm sorry that I can't explain my situation clearly. My Monstera plant grows only upwards, and its leaves are quite small. It already reaches one meter in height and is only about 30 centimeters wide. I would like the leaves to become wider, like your monstera, which grows against the wall. How can I achieve this goal? Maybe I have another kind of monstera that grows like a vine? I could attach a link to the photo to show what it looks like.
This video is very informative and very funny!!! Thank you for sharing! Question: Does your cinnamon tea recipe work on the fungus gnats as well? Which method is more effective and do you prefer~ the worms or cinnamon?
Newbie here. This might be a silly question but can you repot the props back into the mother plant pot? I do not have space for any more and my fingers are not currently green enough to share the props!

It can take a few months to start seeing fenestrations. Depends if it’s got enough light which sounds like it does. If the original plant is in a bad shape it’s probably best to focus on the cuttings you’ve made
@@SheffieldMadePlants thank you! She's not TOO bad. If I knew how, I'd send pic.
It’s an adansonii 😁
😂😂😂😂I watched this and proceeded to do exactly what you said not to...😢😢😢... I was tired and not thinking.😂😂😂😂
Lesson learned. I did this and my Monstera is putting out unfenestrated leaves. However, I don't even mind, it's still quite beautiful. But, I will not be doing THAT again. 💚💚💚
Thanks for sharing!
One thing I found out is that monstera borsigiana does get perforations in its leaves, just not as much.
Yep true 👍
You're lucky at least you still have yours😢. I brought one home years ago it had one tiny leaf, it grew very quickly and touched the ceiling. 😮
I had to give him away to a place that had two story high for the ceiling.🥹 I still miss him but where I am now my ceillings are even lower.☹️
Sounds wild. Did it have lots of leaves?
@@SheffieldMadePlants He was full and bushy and I don't remember how many leaves, but his new leaves 😔 were bending along the ceiling, short of opening the window and letting him continue outside the building, what could I do?
I'm in Quebec so that wouldn't have worked for the winter ❄️
One little leaf, I told myself how big can he get? When he was a baby he sat on the coffee table 😂😭
Can we all just take a second to appreciate Mr.Sheffields jokes please😂😂😂😂My favourite was" Nubes, not Boobs"has to be my favourite coz he's not a millennial😂😂
Haha Thanks!
@3:25 probably as big as mine is!
I think some of its leaved reached at good 50cm and it is not even that old either!
👍👍👍
Seriously though I needed this vid! Ive kept my monstera alive for almost a year. Thats good for me😊
That's great!
What should i do with ugly leaves? Should i just cut of the part close to the leave?
Cut the leaf off at the base
Maybe you can bring in a tarp to repot that big Monstera in situ? Good luck 😁
That's a good idea!
That was so entertaining and informative, thank you! My monstera has a lot of super duper long aerial roots. I don't currently have it staked (but I will do that today!) so do I just try to wrap those roots back up the new stake? Thank you! :)
Glad it was helpful! No need to do anything special with the aerial roots. Leave them to do their thing.
@@SheffieldMadePlants thank you 😊
Great video one question I got 1 stem growing roots 3 of them, longest about 2 inches want to ask when is the best time to pot in soil ?
About 3 or 4 inches in length
There's something about the sound quality that reminds me of pre-2000..
Don’t understand
I was really surprised when after not watering my indoor monstera for a few weeks, it put out a giant leaf with tons of fenestrations. It goes to show that they really don't need too much fussing over. Granted, I live in the tropics so it has plenty of warm, humid air to thrive on, so results may vary. The only thing I regret is buying one that already had a sideways growth on one of the main stems, so I have been trying to deal with that as it is trying to grow on the corner of the room walls 😂 Said beautiful new leaf is on the sideways stem.
Ah yes that can be tricky. Is it climbing up something?
Wow…great info about getting large fenestrated leaves!!
Glad it was helpful!
what about getting rid of dry/brown/yellow leaves? Where exactly should they be cut? Could you please do a video on that? @SheffieldMadePlants
Cut the petiole where it meets the stem. As long as the stem is not cut you're fine
Thanks for the video & tips.
At 3:31 there is something visible in the pot; is that a clay vessel? I would live to pot mine up with an olla like that, if it works well.
Yes a little terra cotta stake for gradual watering. It’s good
I have a huge one and all the leafs are massive but got damaged in the storm but the and roots are great. I don’t want to propagate it or cut the main stem at at all BUT I want a pretty plant - If pull/cut off the leaves only -- will it push a new *large leaf?
If you leave the stem it will send out a new leaf at the top
Hi
I have the monstera( swiss cheese ) plant growing in a pot inside and growing up a support screen in my entrance lobby. Problem is it has become tall but sparse leaves on it.
I want it to be tall but how do i get the stem to grow enough leaves with shoots spreading everywhere?
I want a monstera cover.
I get light from my double ceiling windows some 20 ft away
A Monstera won’t branch out. You’d need more plants in the pot. Plus lots of light to get short internodal spaces
What type of wood did you use for the stake?
i have three monsteras in one pot since about 10 years. , repotted 3 times. It is growing tall, lots of leaves, but almost no windows. I think one of the vines is about 3m long 😅 I think I need to shorten it, what do you think?
No slits you mean?
9:28 Yep that is definetely mold lol
Some interesting comments about that 👇
@@SheffieldMadePlants Ooh yeah i see it
I’m still confused on what I’m supposed to do. If I’m not to prune it like that-are you just saying to leave it?
Yes, avoid pruning unless you want to reset the plant
Great video, thanks!
Thanks for watching 😁
I’m looking, specifically, for those terracotta self-watering tubes! I can’t seem to find them in the description!
They're in my amazon store linked in the description
@@SheffieldMadePlants thank you!
The white fuzzy stuff could just be harmless houseplant fungi (I forget the name) it does appear when soil stays overtly moist 😅
Yeah sounds like that’s what it is
Omg the stories I have with my monstera as well 😅…i stunted its growth so bad causing it to develop a mini mature leaf.
Oh well sounds like he’s forgiven you 😅
Some of my monstera leaves were browned and ripped from when I bought it at the store. I cut them off- is that bad for my plant?
No it will grow some more
Got any Deliciosa or just Borinsagna... or however you spell it lol I have 8 "small form" or borinsagna monstera before I got a real deliciosa. The ones you buy at the garden center are small form borinsagna.
Yea hard to get hold of Deliciosa
Your voice sounds deeper here are you well?
All good points here per usual.
But the part that demands the most world-wide attention is, why can't somebody make inner pots with drainage holes, that fit perfectly inside outer decorative pots with no holes, that you want solid, where you don't have to drill holes and deal with unsightly shallow watering trays underneath?
Yeah i had a stupid cold that went on for 2 weeks. Maybe you could start that business...
Totally agree with your pot idea! I find it so frustrating, trying to match inner pots with outer decorative pots. They never completely match/fit.
Mr Sheffield you crack me up 😅😂👌👍👍
Cheers!
Hi 👋 where did you buy the clay water feeder in your monestera? Great vlog, thanks. Peace 🧚
Amazon. I think I’ve got in my Amazon store linked in the description
@@SheffieldMadePlants ahhhhh thanks 4 reply, that’s great 😃
Amazing video - as always!
Have you got any on your melanochrysum? Would love to know your care tips!
Thanks! Not specifically no
Great video, and funny to Bro. Much respect😆😆😆😆
Thanks!
If they’re making the plant look ugly then I’d cut them off
@@SheffieldMadePlants it's a bit ugly. Where do I make the cut at the base of the stem?
@@larrywilkins6727 I’d cut to the nearest decent leaf
Hilarious and informative. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Do you also have a Monstera Adansonii? Im looking for more info. mine doesnt look very happy
My Monstera Adansonii Is Thriving Now I Do This

I have thrips on my Monstera, leaves are all getting brown and unhappy how to get rid of them for good? Idk what to do have tried everything
Beneficial mites?
Small form Monstera deliciosa need to climb, but large form actually like to crawl and activelly try to avoid height.
Fair shout 👍
I saw a giant variegated monstera in our local garden centre yesterday, £799 😱 I’ll count the leaves again in a couple of weeks time 😂
Blimey how much!
Great video Sheff!
2 monstera questions;
now I know you use the self watering stakes now, but when you were watering, did you let the monstera dry all the way out or keep it moist? I've heard conflicting info regarding this.
Also, whats your hot take on monsteras liking to be root bound? Do you keep yours tight or let it groove?
I recently had repotted my lil albo into a pot 1-2 inches bigger than the root ball...and in 5 weeks that sucker was so rootbound in its new pot i had to upsize already!
Seems repotting that much would be detrimental?
Thanks again for all the info mate, your wisdom and humor have made me a better plant parent.💕
Thanks! I let the soil dry out. Monsteras don’t much like wet feet. I don’t rush to repot. They don’t seem to mind too much
Mr Sheffield, how do i get on to your Amason store.?
It’s in the description to all my vids. Depends where you’re based
I made the same mistake with my Monstera, not giving it something to climb up to. Now I need to prune the biggest, longest stem with beautiful leaves. Not looking forward to it but it has to be done I guess. Gonna put it on water and hope for the best. I just want my Monstera to be much more vertical instead of the mess it is I made of it now.
Should grow roots no problem
My monstera have made babies. One plant is now three, with a fourth one starting. How can i best support this new growth? Prune the older branches?
Not sure what you mean. Monstera don’t tend to grow babies? They grow a single vine
@@SheffieldMadePlants Maybe I need a UA-cam channel. Lol.
My monstera keeps growing new leaves but then they turn yellow and die. Also the tips get crinkly and gray. I really want to help it but don't know what to do. Not all leaves are affected so I've been just cutting the leaves that are (hopefully this is not a bad thing to do) and hoping for the best
Have you had a look at the roots for rot? Are there any pests?
@@SheffieldMadePlants I suspect there could be thrips? And the roots are getting really long so I need to get a bigger pot
My monsters had root rot, so I had to remove all the soil to bare roots. Now it's dropping. How do I rescue it?
The ultimate solution is to propagate it and start again
Can I cut the long roots growing off the potted plant or just let them be? I just added bamboo stakes since I watched this but I have really long shoots coming off of it and I’m just not sure what to do with them. Thanks in advance!
You can them off. No harm to the plant
Is there a link thing for this patrion(?)channel, it seems like I am missing a lot! I don't know if it will work on my computer though. Thanks for the information. I love the humor and your editing moves like Jagger! Peace.

Sitting here watching this video while staring at my monstera cutting that I had to chop completely off again because of yellowing leaves- but it's sprouting 4 new stems?! Do I have some plant magic going on I didn't know about??
Are they small? Normally one dominates and takes centre stage
Hi! Your videos are very cool and useful. Thanks! However, I have not found an answer to my question about my monster growing as an epipremnum. It just keeps going up, and I'm not sure what to do about it. Could you please help me?
Sorry not sure what you mean
@@SheffieldMadePlants I'm sorry that I can't explain my situation clearly. My Monstera plant grows only upwards, and its leaves are quite small. It already reaches one meter in height and is only about 30 centimeters wide. I would like the leaves to become wider, like your monstera, which grows against the wall. How can I achieve this goal? Maybe I have another kind of monstera that grows like a vine?
I could attach a link to the photo to show what it looks like.
@@toorutakayama7686 yes send me a photo to my email. It’s in my bio

Question: Does your cinnamon tea recipe work on the fungus gnats as well?
Which method is more effective and do you prefer~ the worms or cinnamon?
