    You knocked it home kevin. I was 12 years old at the Champaign mall and saw star wars. I saw it forty times in that theater. I was known in sixth grade as the 'star wars kid'. Star Wars changed my life. I had open heart surgery two years ago, and the only reason I am still here is because I wanted to see this movie. Now that I have seen it, with my dear old friends, I can die happy. Would love to see the rest of the new ones coming out, but I got what I wanted from this planet. Thank you Kevin Smith, you are an upright cool guy, and you give this old man hope for humanitys future.

    The part that kills me every time with Chewie is the relationship he MUST have had with Ben. He was probably uncle chewie. He was there when his best friend's child was born. Watched him grow up, probably protected him like he was his own. But the SECOND Ben killed Han he was in SO much pain, he didn't see the kid he'd known. He just knew the man who'd taken his friend from him and pulled the trigger.

      That comic strip of that scene should be canon. After Kylo kills Han. Chewie has a killshot but he remembers Ben Solo as a baby and a kid. Playing, caring...then he couldn't bring himself to kill Ben so he shoots him in the hip.

    SPOILERS: Hey, Kev, as much as the bloody handprint adds to the dramatic atmosphere of the Stormtrooper scenes, I think a more important part is that it visually distinguishes Finn from the other Stormtroopers. Without it, you have a bunch of identical looking troopers, and your audience keeps having to think about whether the trooper they are watching is the traitor or someone else.

    I love kevin he seems almost afraid of talking about the film. Really reminds me of the beginning of "The Gladiator" where Marcus Aurelius talks about the future of Rome ;-) you can almost just take the word "Rome" and switch it with Star Wars.
    "There was once a dream that was Rome. You could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish... it was so fragile. And I fear that it will not survive the winter."

    A small but very important detail in the ray kylo fight is how enraged ray looks in her face as she is overpowering him. Ppl dont like how she beat him, but how many times have sith talked about hate and anger giving power. And thats EXACTLY what she was tapping into. And maybe thats why the ground splits them apart before she kills him.

    • @noahzard6743
      @noahzard6743 8 років тому +10

    • @Absolynth

      Im talking about common themes found throughout star wars being integrated into the actors performances in a specific scene of the movie...?.... Did I ever say Kylo is a sith? Or that Ray is? I was making an observation, spaz.

      +DuesX187 Stuff like that doesn't get put into the movie by accident. If it was wrong it would get cut out. And JJ had a advisor with him the whole time, a complete Star Wars geek who knew all these little details.
      I think you've found a major plot point for the next movie.

    • @galeforce1066
      @galeforce1066 8 років тому +3

      +DuesX187 Yes, I saw her get a sneer on her face as she butt-whooped him & I sat up & took notice. She looked like Luke in a rage when he clobbered his Pop. That's when the Emperor said: 'your anger's made you powerful'. Rey will be tempted by the Darkside; Kylo will be tempted by the Light. They will tempt each other. By Episode IX, Kylo will convert or she will kill him if he doesn't (if Chewie doesn't kill him 1st).

    • @Absolynth
      @Absolynth 8 років тому +7

      +DuesX187 It also seems like Kylo wears the mask not only because he looks to Vader for inspiration, but more importantly it's probably to hide the likely common signs of personal inner conflict apparent in much of his character to begin with, that would undoubtedly be all over his face, as it often is without the mask.

  • @boomzilla86

    i really cant be the only one who realized it was a rehash of the first movie. not an homage, not a spiritual successor, just a fraternal twin to a new hope. why was that necessary? or at the very least, why didnt they make it less obvious? visually it was nice and most of the acting was good, but storywise they could have been more creative and less predictable. it was good but not nearly as good as people are giving credit for.

    I think Rey is a clone created from Luke Skywalkers arm. Whoever found the blue lightsaber also found Luke Skywalkers arm. C3PO said R2D2 is basically dead and needs Luke Skywalker present in order to come back to life. The moment Rey walks into the Resistance base camp, R2D2 comes back to life and wakes up to complete the map. That should explain why the lightsaber is calling out to her at the cantina 2.0. Maybe to a certain extent, the blue lightsaber thinks it's Luke Skywalker. That should also explain why she didn't need formal Jedi training to pull off some of the stuff she did (handling of the lightsaber, almost defeating Ren, Jedi mind trick w/ stormtrooper).

      It's a good point, but its one of those things where it never seemed like there was an intricate enough battle to need them. Bear with me here. compared to the destruction of the two death stars this one seemed kind of simple, maybe they just didn't need the extra firepower? Just a thought

      Lord Tesram I agree with you regarding the aerial rescue during the assault on Maz's "Mos Eisley"...X-wings were enough and A-wings would have been a nice addition but not required. However, the assault on the star killer base had to have Y-wings and B-wings... I mean it was a bombing mission.

      +Filip Matevski this scene is the scene that clenched the "Rey is Lukes Daughter" theory for me. I've watched it 2x now...going for a 3rd on saturday...and look at Kylo and Rey's faces when "the lightsaber chooses". Kylo is shocked...and so is Rey. Both of them are standing there with "What the hell just happened" looks on their faces.
      Earlier when Kylo is digging in her head he says "you've been dreaming about the ocean...i see the island" then we find out Luke is on an Island in the middle of an ocean. In the Cantina...the lightsaber calls out to her and then the lightsaber chooses her.

    The one prophesied to bring balance to the force wasn't Anakin or Luke,........ it was J.J. Abrams.
    This movie brought back memories of standing in line outside the walk-in in 1977 to see Star Wars. I was 12, there were vendors there hawking Star Wars stuff to people in line, my Mom bought me a Hilderbrandt Star Wars movie poster that I had on my wall for years.
    I agree with Kevin 100% about this movie. It's the real deal.

  • @glowyrm

    Kylo Ren being "torn apart" and "in pain" (his words) by his internal battle between the light side and the dark side is EXTREMELY interesting.
    I love a villain that isn't in complete control and is conflicted, makes for a great character and arc.
    I'm a softy so it's hard for me to say I like it more than Anakin's fall (going to the dark side out of love), but I do think it's more interesting!
    Kylo Ren is awesome.

    • @christianalanwilson434
      @christianalanwilson434 8 років тому +2

      Agreed, Kylo ain't no Darth Vader. At least not yet. And maybe Han trying too hard to bring him back to the light actually helped him fall. But you can really tell, at least for a moment, Kylo is genuinely torn in his choice...a part of him wants Han to take the lightsaber...but in the end the Dark Side, wins out. Here we get to see Kylo's darkest moment, and even then he later seems to shows some compassion to Rey. Definitely fitting for a character who identifies so much with Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker, who ended up redeeming himself at the end.

      Does anyone else think Rey could STILL be Han and Leia's daughter? The way Han looked at her and reacted to her seemed very fatherly...maybe he was terrified of telling her about her lineage given what happened to Ben.
      Still don't 100% buy that Rey is Luke's kid. The setup and parallels between Rey and Kylo seemed much more brother/sister than cousins.
      ALTHOUGH the way that Maz said that the lightsaber used to be Vader's, and then Luke's, and is now her's, nearly confirms that she's Skywalker's daughter.

    [SPOILERS] I disagree about Rey. Let's compare her to Luke from A New Hope: Luke loses his family, his home and a mentor and destroys the Death Star to become a hero of the rebellion; Rey loses nothing because she starts from nothing, and spontaneously becomes a Jedi who saves a lightsaber. Finn and Poe are a better representation of Luke's arc from A New Hope split into two characters. Rey's character is overpowered. _Oh, did we forget to put a Jedi in for the obligatory lightsaber duel? We'll just give it to Rey. She's saved our characters from all their other problems._ Luke was an inexperienced young man. He was a bit whiny, young people are whiny. It gave him room to grow. Finn and Kylo Ren are the most satisfying characters in the movie because they struggle and change as characters, which makes them relatable. Rey doesn't change as a character. She has spontaneous Jedi powers, but how does it change her character? She was already badass, now she's more badass. Did you see her fly the Millennium Falcon? That was badass. She's capable from the beginning to the end. She's has the attitude of Leia + Han Solo with the power of the force comin' out the wahzoo. She's almost certainly Ren's sister.

    Why is everyone raving about Abrahms work? Honestly the movie was good, but not great. It was safe, it took a similar story arc to a New Hope, and kylo is a hipster looking cry baby who should of kept his mask on, Phasma was a joke, and the fact that both Finn and Rey can use a lightsaber with no training and take on Kylo who is suppose to be a trained Dark Force user who can cleary stop a blaster shot in mid air, but can't defeat a untrained force sensitive Rey? Makes no sense! Also after how many years the best thing they can come up with is a bigger death star called star killer!? Very original..... Honestly! and wait, it gets blown up by finding a weakness with X wings! We have seen this before in new hope and Return of the Jedi, and now here. Think of some new shit! There is no need to recycle old shit. I hope that the next two are better cause this one wan't anything special if you really cut it deep with a knife. I love Star wars but this just didn't do it for me

      +RossardJames Finn when he faces the Stormtrooper and first uses the Lightsaber as a weapon he seemed too comfortable at times with technique etc like he has used one before. He even knew how to turn it on. It would of been better in my opinion if some how he was panicking to turn it on and at the last min as the storm trooper comes and goes in for the attack he manages to accidentally turn in on killing the trooper. He ran in balls to wall with that thing. Even though Rey is Force Sensitive and strong with the force like Luke and Anakin, she became too comfortable to quickly in using it with absolutely "NO" training. Luke and Anakin both needed training from Obi wan and Yoda to control their powers and she finds out the force is real and goes hmmm I'm a give it a shot and see what happens and over powers a stormtrooper and Kylo in retrieving it? Also why didn't Kylo stop Chewys cross bow blast like be did before in the movie? Kylo was pre-occupied at that point too :)

It's very shallow in terms of showing anything really new and I've had no interest in seeing it more than once. But I saw Phantom Menace several times when it came out. TFA feels more like a reboot/introduction to me now for the hopefully more interesting movies to come.

      Nah, you're not the only one. But as far as recapturing the feel of the original trilogy? The prequels managed this feat MAYBE a few times across all three movies. But Force Awakens did this with just one film. It's all opinion of course, but to me, the prequels really didn't matter. We already knew how they would end, and what we got seemed like 90% phoned in money-grabbing crap (thanks Lucas) with 10% left for an actual interesting story. Now Star Wars is going into completely new territory, and for a lot of us that's exciting...for others I suppose it's scary.

    Great flick. For those who feel Rey is "too perfect" now, keep in mind she also has all the Luke issues from Empire that Snoke can exploit - too old, a strong emotional connection with Finn already that Snoke could *easily* manipulate to get her to do something stupid, & when she finds out Han was her either uncle or dad who was murdered right in front of her the dark side anger should rise. She's the chess piece Snoke is gonna want; Luke has his work cut out to keep her centered.

      +Aditya C - in a sense he kind of is. He's chosen this Dark Side path for some reason, and his whole deal is that at some level he hasn't entirely come to terms with that. He's desperate to prove to himself and to Snook that he's this force of pure evil, because deep down he knows that he's not.
      I think even killing Solo isn't going to do it for him. It's gonna be one of those things where he thought doing this thing was finally gonna seal the deal, make him the man he wanted to be. But even that can't change who he _is_. If anything, he's probably gonna be feeling guilty about it, it's gonna be staring him in the face reminding him every day that he's not the guy he wants to be.

    Were we watching the same movie, Kevin Smith? She ran away from a vision. Luke didn't listen to people, and he abandoned his training at a few points, but he did it to save people. Even when he was being selfish, he was being a hero. Rey just ran the fuck off into the woods. And why? They could have done the whole imperial sequence without that. She could have stayed in the bar, and gotten separated during the assault, and then all the rest of the scenes could have remained the same. Instead she got scared and ran, serving no purpose except to satisfy the conditions of the Hero's Journey.

      +joffrecordan Seems like Rey can't win with some people. Some say she's a Mary Sue and others complain she rejects the call to action for selfish reasons. She has a character arc and doesn't have to be super heroic for 100% of her first film, and to point out the obvious: running away from something is not whining. She never whined once in fact, she showed genuine fear of that vision (understandably so, it was pretty upsetting and replayed a very painful memory for her as well as showing a massacre by the guy she will be face to face with very soon). She is a different take on the hero archetype which Luke also fits into but isn't she just isn't Luke.

The prequels would have been much better films, had they casted someone else for Anakin, gotten rid of the Gungans, and had diminished the Anakin-Padme relationship and removed all the stupid dialogue.
      To fix this movie, I would just suggest rewriting the whole plot.

    One thing I noticed in this film was the deepness in the characters.
    For example, I felt like I knew Han Solo way better only on this movie than on all the other 3 movies with it. Just simple things, simple dialog lines, but masterfully written, that made all the difference in knowing the characters. Rey and Ren are excelent characters! Really complex and misterious. Finn was also very well accomplished, being the first 5 minutes enough to know about its personality.
    Overall, that's what I loved the most in this film. Of course, the acting was top notch, which helped a lot in what I mentioned before.

      Brian Alvarez It's what makes the most sense. My buddy who is another big Star Wars nut said that Ewan McGregor's voice can be heard in the flashback sequence during Force Awakens. Idk if that's true, but imo Obi-Wan makes the most sense. We know that Luke had been training a new generation of Jedi after Vader was destroyed and we all know that the Jedi code forbids love and relationships as we learned from the prequels. And since Luke was such a die-hard Jedi would've likely followed the code in order to focus training the Jedi. Obi-wan living so long by himself on Tattooine he might've had a relationship despite being a Jedi himself but his circumstance being so different from Luke's might've deviated from the Jedi code to pursue a relationship. Obi-Wan makes more sense than Luke. Besides, after we find out Luke and Leia are brother and sister it would be kind of lame to find out that Kylo Ren and Rey are also siblings. Learning more about Obi-wan's past on Tattooine to reveal that he had a kid would make more sense and be better for the story.

    Funny, I felt like Chewbacca's reaction to the death of Han was too mild. He seemed to scream louder on Hoth when the base doors closed and fought harder when he was about to be frozen in carbonite. It was a really good movie, not as good as any of the original trilogy but better than any of the prequels. And it was nice to see a new Star Wars movie that was not just all "green screen" overload like the prequels.

      It's not fair to a movie goer or the movie to automatically compare it to the OT. I hold the OT in high regard, as well. But mainly because it blew my mind I watched them from the ages of 4-10 and never looked for plot holes and flaws (although the OT is full of them) in movies. I had nothing to compare those movies to as a kid, because they were the only SW movies that existed. Now, they're like old friends of the family I've know for 38 years. Now they just introduced a pretty cool member of their family that I think just met, but I haven't known that family member as long, so of course I'd be closer to the the older friends. Doesn't negate the fact that that new friend is still pretty cool. Plus, as a kid, I didn't nitpick. I just had a blast watching fun amazing SW movies. Going into this, I pre-set my brain to that mindset and came out of the theater ready to get back in line for TFA again and can't wait for the next one.

    • @jonvegard31
      @jonvegard31 8 років тому

      +Eric Ruby Yeah, this is what I keep saying. You can't really compare this movie to the old ones when there's 38 years of nostalgia build-up, or simply from when you were a kid at any point in time. I first saw the original trilogy when I was 3-4 years old, back in 94-95. TFA just can't measure up to that. Even so, I freaking loved this movie, and the generation that's been introduced to SW via TFA might love it as much as the fans of the originals love them.

    Here's some Deep Cuts for you.
    Lucas used to talk about "Hero with 1000 Faces" and the Heroes Journey outline that comes from it being a huge inspiration in his early work; The Dark Night Of The Soul portion of the Journey mentions metaphorically going into a dark cave to face the thing - usually fear - that holds the hero back. Lucas took this literally in "Empire..." when he had Luke face the Degobah Vader in the cave while Spirit Obi and not-dead-yet Yoda chit-chatted.
    "...Journey" talks about how characters will often kill their progenitor (dad's for sons and mom's for daughters, usually) in order to surpass them and move forward in their journey. Oedipus is one of the better known classical examples of this.
    Kylo Ren *has* to kill Solo in order to make the next stage of his journey, as suggest by "Hero With 1000 Faces", one of the core inspirations for the entire Star Wars Universe.
    Deep Cuts, bro.

    I don't buy how Rey is so gifted in the force before she has any real knowledge of the nature of the force. I liked the part where she pulls the Jedi mind trick from a purely visceral level but again how does she even know about the concept of the Jedi mind trick before she has received any training? She only knew the force as a vague myth but she manages to summon advanced methods of the force through only intuition. Even Luke had to be trained before he could really do anything special with the force. Kylo while not yet a Sith had received extensive training from Luke and later Snoke yet this chick with no prior knowledge of the force defeats him by using the force. Perhaps this will be explained later but for now it makes no sense that she has such knowledge of the force itself. I did really like the movie though and I liked the Rey character but its not above a critique at this point.

    • @mercuryman67
      @mercuryman67 8 років тому +2

      I mostly agree with you, but i will point out that Luke summoned his lightsaber in Empire without any real idea that it was possible or even an example to go by. He needed to do it and so the force was with him.

      @anthroparion 8 років тому +7

      +mercuryman67 Luke at least had some training from Obi. He struggled to get the sabe to move a couple of feet. Rey just instantly grabs it from miles away. Kylo was forcing everything, he was no hack. He made Rey pass out, threw her in to a tree, froze her standing ... Then suddenly she grabs the light saber - pre-wig out. what? then Kylo forgets to use the force to kick her ass. Then, she wigs out mide fight and becomes a jedi.
      Why find the map/luke when she does not need any training. Rendered the whole story pointless

    • @Prof_Tickles92

      She didn't know of the mind trick. What I noticed was that Kylo Ren was pushing as hard as he can to break her will, and she in turn was resisting as hard as she could. Think of two energy beams colliding and bouncing back and forth trying to overpower the other. Eventually Kylo Ren proved to be weaker willed(although the novelization explains that while searching her mind for the image of the map he stumbled upon a huge secret, which was implied to be the key to her identity and it distracted him) and Rey's exertion overpowered him for a split second and she got inside his mind, hence the Darth Vader comment. And Rey was just as shocked at what she did, but she probably thought if she concentrated enough maybe she could do it again to someone weaker and overpower their mind, hence the storm trooper

    It's one thing to make nods towards Episode 4, but these writers straight up ripped off A New Hope. So lame, used an entire episode that could have shown us life after Vader and all we basically get is more of the same thing. Say what you will about the prequels, but at least they opened up the universe and made it feel less claustrophobic.

Not to mention, it seemed like the film established a connection between between her and Han and Leia, she had Han's piloting and engineering ability and Leia's force sensitivity. There was also the bit where Kylo read her mind and saw that she thought of Han as the father she never had, then there's the scene at the end where she and Leia seem to share an emotional bond. My money's on her being Kylo's sibling.

      TheRhinehart86 yeah a connection that could easily be Uncle Aunt and niece. My money is still on her being Luke's daughter that he hid away.

    Also, a great point was made. The locations and costumes were 100% on point. Nothing got to flashy or "new", yet the story was COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. That was the key. The second tril, imo, was relying on the ethos.
