Andrew and Darshan Wienick are proud Saluki owners. In this video they share with the Dogumentary TV family, their life with their pack of Salukis.
Salukis are sighthounds-hunting by sight-and run their quarry down to retrieve it. The normal size range for the breed is 23-28 inches (58-71 cm) high at the withers and 40-60 pounds (18-27 kg) in weight. Female salukis are slightly smaller than males. The head is long and narrow with large eyes and drop ears.[6] The tail of the breed is long and curved. It has the typical deep-chested, long-legged body of sighthounds. The coat comes in a variety of colors including white, cream, fawn, red, grizzle/tan, black/tan, and tri-color (white, black and tan).
"It's like living with royalty."
This is what I always thought of Salukis. There's just something so regal and graceful about their stance, movement, and general physical appearance. So monarch-level.
rusty wine it cuz they r horse
Agree 👌
Form follows function.
Hounds are more sensitive and more aware. I have a hound and she is the best company & always tells me when something isn't right.
Not a Salukis of course-
I mean it’s reasonable since salukis are royalty in Bedouin tribes.
I used to work for Amazon & I seen the same Saluki everyday on my route and its the most athletic dog I’ve seen. It was like a baby horse.
Saluki lovers just come down to Southern Illinois, its our mascot(only school with it)
We adopted one female saluki from Oman last year, beautiful and amazing creatures, and hilarious sometimes, we definitely will keep adopting Salukis in the future, brown tabbies and Salukis will be our forever family members.
Linden Meng.
If you are interested to adopt dogs from Oman, contact me plz. We have around 8 beautiful wadi dogs looking for a loving home.
Got 1 owned a few but from Mesopotamia, now iraq , beautiful dogs
I lived in the Dominican Republic in the late 90s. My dad agreed that we could get a dog. His vet for our cats had rescued a pregnant street dog and offered us one of her puppies. I was so excited when we were able to pick our puppy up. Adorable puppy as they all are, I had no idea that I would be getting THE most special being to come into my life. We named him Chico and couldn’t wait for him to grow and see what kind of dog he was. He grew into a lean, elegant, amazing looking dog that everyone would ask what kind of dog is that. We didn’t know, he was so unique looking and just as human like as he could be. So we swabbed his mouth and sent out for his DNA analysis. He was majority Saluki mixed with unknown hound. We had never heard of this dog and were so surprised to read up on their origins. We have always wondered how a Dominican street dog had a dog part Saluki 🤷♀️. I’m SO grateful she did! Best dog EVER. A once in a lifetime type dog. I will never forget him, he lived 18 years. He was fantastic! This video reminds me of him because the similarities are amazing. I would love to own another one day. Chico always behaved as if he were human 😄
Most of the dogs in Dominican Republic, the street dogs, are sight hounds. They were brought by Christopher Columbus to help them get food in these lands they knew nothing about. That is why a lot of them look so skinny, which is sad because people look down on them thinking they're sick because you can see their ribs and whatnot. I too hung out with these dogs, took me a while to discover their breed, but once you do realize they are hunting dogs everything makes sense. They are the most gentle and magestic dog I've met, a true companion and an asset to any person or family regardless of how active they are. I would never pay for a dog, only Saluki or another sight hound, only dog worth my money.
I love and adore salukis, it was my first dog. Then borzoi, then a whippet, now my sister has 2 borzois and I have 2 whippet princesses. Have I had the economy for that, I would looove to have almost 1 of each sighthound, may be not the afgan cause it is tooo much grooming for me 😅😅 Otherwise I always say - sighthounds are the best dogs, spend a weekend or a week babysitting a saluki or a whippet and you fall in love madly
saluki is common here in saudi arabia
saluki is not for fighting or gaurding but excellent for hunting or being a family member
also can talorate our hot climate
very fast and the cleanest dogs you ever could have
Sam Fryer backwards ass culture is the only explanation
That’s awesome Qassem :) They look like awesome family dogs!
Bro try standard poodles. More cleaner than other breeds, unless they roll in mud.
@@samfryer8132
there many reasons ( btw i have other breeds, canario + two german shepherds)
main reasons , no dog smell ( odor ) and they dont drool + they dont attack humans ( maybe if you train them to attack) + they usually dont interact with human physically ( independent) they like to have their own space
+ to us here in saudi arabia these the best dog can live in our climate where it s easy to reach 50 c in summer
there is misinformation that musilms use these dogs because they are clean as she said in this video
the turth is that this dog breed is available and used every where in middle east especially in the past ( where it is population are mainly muslims) + plus in islam dogs should not be pets or business ( buying and selling them) only if you need them for a reason like hunting or gaurding and saluki are excellent for hunting
Unfortunately this breed becomes recently as rich people pets
-
@@ArtificialgeneralInteligence it could be other dogs as you said but remember saluki is an ancient breed and well known for this trait unlike other breed ( personally i dont like salukis but i see them every where here)
We adopted a rescue Saluki mix from Qatar, and I'm amazed at how well he corners and runs considering he only has three legs! They're amazing animals and I'd love to adopt more!
😊
The interview went so well and it was very informative with regard to the Salukis. I can definitely listen to the couple the whole day telling us just how great the Salukis are! You can tell that they really are hands-on parents to their dogs. Maybe you can do another interview for the Chihuahua? I'm sold!
I have owned Salukis for thirty years, the most beautiful and loving of all dogs.
I had 2 Saluki's, we trained them not to chew things and not to beg or steal food, they learned very quickly and were the most respectful dogs. It is also possible to train so that they will not run after squirrels while off leash, but that does take quite a bit of time. Truly Incredible creatures.
Are they ok with cats?
@@cloudstreets1396 Yes they are, especially when socialized at a young age.
The Saluki was the breed that actively got me interested in the Sighthound group. Would absolutely love one of these beauties in the future.
😂👍
We live in the UK and used to have a saluki x greyhound he loved to sit on my lap like a cat.
If we tried to keep him out of the bedroom at night he would howl to be with us.
He once jumped straight over a 1.5 meter high gate from standing and chased the paper boy on his bike. Thankfully the paperboy wasn't hurt and had a sense of humor and was laughing as i prized the dogs jaws from his trousers leg. Somebody once put their hand into our daughter's pram he had hold of their wrist before i could blink. but he was so gentle he didnt even scratch them.
He had a quirky personality and constantly made us laugh.
R.I.P Barney..
ive always thought of them sort of breeds as beautiful and as i may be getting one, i believe he'll make my mental health so much better.
Thank you for the information. Very responsible and great owners for great dogs.
The very moment this rare and extrem elegant dog enters your life, nothing will be the same!!! In no time will be the king of your heart & house. Very good interview.
I’ve owned Salukis since 1998 and this is spot on information about the breed. Great job!
Are they expensive?
Simply the world most beautiful dogs..
Ive had the pleasure of owning greyhounds and also a part saluki lurchers.. There is something about sight hounds apart from the occasional mischief are so relaxing to have around the movement of them is pure grace
My greyhound deerhound mix can jump a six foot fence without a running start. I love watching him run. Such a great and loving dog. He is a prince though, big time spoiled crybaby. Sight hounds are really special.
The best so far.... no one can have one Saluki only
I have a rescue saluki from the UAE and he is the loveliest doggo there could be. I agree that is a very clean smelling animal. I let him off leash outside once to see what would happen and he went walkabout for about 1.5 hours. Never doing that again. He is sweet tempered and neurotic about a handful of things but he trusts me and has learned to overcome so many fears.
From what organization did you adopt? I used to volunteer at 2 shelters a while ago and I kept recommending salukis to visitors in fact I have 2 salukis 😂
@@khalidayoub11 Animal Action UAE.
Wow, you're very fortunate he came back at all! When we adopted from STOLA we signed papers that we would never let them off leash unless in an enclosed area with a 6+ foot fence.
@@janet-Spirit_of_the_Living_God yeah I didn’t have an enclosed back yard for a few weeks when I moved and took a risk after three years of owning him. Never again.
Totally amazing, we enjoyed our wonderful friend till his age took him, thank you Levi for educating us and the time we had together in Ruovesi, Finland …
have three. Beautiful dog, good with kids not small pets though, need space to run as they are active.
Very sensible one minute and daft as a brush the next. Loving dogs, who are good for everyone. Recently lost our boy, Osh, who was a rehome and aged about 15 when he went - such a great dog and really missed. We had ours with cats and no problem, happy around kids of all ages, love food and not fussy on what they eat. They will generally do whatever it is you want to do until they decide it's their turn and that's when the personality comes out. Osh would always stamp his front paws on the floor like some petulant child telling off their parents.... but always in a fun way. Quite vocal when they want/need to be. Not really a guard dog as such, but were great for telling me when the mobile phone/MS Teams was calling... the dog knew what a ring tone was and would always alert me to it. Seemed to naturally understand any and all commands related to sleeping/bed etc. Super dog breed and one I can highly recommend for anyone.
I have a Saluki Lurcher and I can't stress enough how vulnerable my dinner is.
Also, when you describe them as intelligent, devious more like!
I've always loved Salukis: the only possible hound to hunt unicorns with.
🤨
Hi, I do have my second Saluki right now... 24/7 wiht here... again... I do have 3 child... yes Salukis like childreen... but it is possible to let childreen going out in freedome... I am also able to let Saluki going out in freedome without catching any deere or rabitte... it is working with strong force by my selfe... best dog in between cat I ever did... schöne Grüße Jürgen
They’re so gorgeous! 😍
Great dogu, thanks for the perspective on this wonderful breed!
We have a saluki first one.we got him from dogs trust. He's an absolute beauty. He's friendly with everyone social with other dog's naughty and playfully. And his recall is unreal when he's off the lead no matter were he is as soon as we shout his name he's straight over.
You got lucky with that one, man. You never know how they're going to act when they're off in the wild for the first time.
It isn't Colin or Prince is it?
wade Wade we might be about to get a saluki from dogs trust it’s very exciting
@@oliviaplayer8039 I have saluki from Dog's Trust. Best hound ever. Love her to bits.
We are about to adopt a Saluki from Dogs Trust
They are super smart dogs
Thank you so much for this video. I am finding myself completely falling in love with this breed and greatly considering purchasing one, and eventually two. They are magnificent in so many ways.
Such a great video!
These dogs are lucky they have such a loving family
Although I don't agree with most of your training methods, or lack thereof with certain behaviors, I still appreciate the spotlight you've given to this astounding and loving breed
I've waited for this video for forever! Thank you so much. Looking forward to the Borzoi.
Totally correct about everything. Thank you. Having been married to a Saluki ( please laugh ) 35 years ago, he was a Prince. X x oo, my darling Pagan. Beautiful creature. Wish that I could post his picture.
I an avowed terrier person BUT I'd certainly have one of these royal darlings !!! They are breath taking! Love them❤️❤️😘❤️
My highschool mascot is a Saluki!! In the 70s our school combined with another school and decided on the name because the sports conference we were part of was the North Egypt Conference (I think southern Illinois is known as North Egypt, don't ask me why). It also had to do with SIU being the Salukis.
Beautiful dogs.
Thank you for the information.
I wish you rainbows.
I live in Arizona and i can't wait to have me one of these beautiful creatures, one day!
Update?
Love Salukis
For Years, I've always been so fascinated by this breed, the Salukis. They just look so graceful and look like a great dog to have around the house. Hopefully in the near future, I get to own one of these one day. Can you please create a TOP TEN best Dog breeds to have in an Apartment setting ? that would be great!
I have a saluki mix in an apartment and when we’re not walking he’s just sleeping. When I take him to my partners with their big yard and dog, he’ll play a little and pass out under his favourite tree by the pond again.
We have saluki cross greyhound pup and hes very sneaky and cheeky haha definitely manipulative and food motivated. Just like yours 2-3 zoomies and 2 daily walks/ runs will keep him happy. Hes very stubborn and loves my son. He just cant be left alone he howl and whines. Hes very talkative as well. Especially if he wants food or everyone to shut up and go to sleep hahaha love him to bits!
Really have that royal vibe and standing out from other breed.
It’s like you know exactly what the people want to know and see!
salukis are the best!! only dog breed ill probably ever own lol, theyre just too good
Thank you so much for this video. My favorite dog breed. I'm a sighthound fanatic. 😉😁😍
So fun to see how others live with their saluki. We love our 11 saluki and live with them all in our house in Sweden.
Afghan, Saluki, Greyhound e Doberman are among the most beatiful dogs.
Yay, finally salukis! THANK YOU!
Borzoi's next please
Kaitlyn Jenkins yesssss
@@nicoleffion1563 I want a borzoi and a sharpei ..I need to know the pros and cons
Kaitlyn Jenkins shar pei dogs can be great apartment dogs and don't need much exercise only around 40 mins however are very stubborn and not a good first time dog has they need lots of training and lots of grooming to care for the wrinkles on them. Borzois need lots of space and a exercise and lots of training they also aren't the best in living in apartments but they are a loving affectionate breed to their owners. I would suggest doing more research as well so you can get all the info you need on these breeds!
We had a male borzoi who was unfortunately a bit agressive. They can be very nervous and agressive, I've heard from many other borzoi owners. But of course loved him to bits. It was very hard with him, but he was obedient as can be. Could walk off leash, once he even went after a rabbit in the woods, but came back with just one call back. The older he got, the harder it was with him (but we also blame the breeder for carrying on with breeding a nervous mom)
@@TheGardenOfMae Western-bred shar pei have a lot of health problems and low quality of life because of it. Inverted eyelashes rubbing against their eyes, stenotic nares (nostrils pinched shut), tons of skin problems. They are very loyal to one person although still aloof towards them and can be nice enough with tons and I mean tons of socialization as a pup, but still not exactly friendly or "doggy", same thing as with Akitas, Chows, etc. You need a professional puppy trainer involved from day 1. They are known for having a quiet, short fuse like those two as well - no growling, straight to the bite. Not a good choice for families. If you're still interested there are healthier "traditional"/"bone mouth" shar pei breeders out there but very expensive and hard to find. A somewhat similar breed to the traditional shar pei is the Thai Ridgeback.
Borzoi are known to be more neurotic and wild-animal-like than the other sighthounds, they are a sight to behold but require a very specific lifestyle. Namely living in the secluded Russian wilderness as a hunting hound. Go for a greyhound, whippet or saluki instead if you think a sighthound is right for you.
Love the work covered my favorite breeds so far
Doberman
Rhodesian ridgeback
Belgian malinois
Weimaraner
German shorthaired pointer
Saluki
Now just need to see greyhound and standard poodle and I’ll be good lol
Love the Saluki when they run free ❤️
thank you for introducing me to these beautiful dogs :)
I’m getting a beautiful silver saluki and I’m going to call her Cleo after Cleopatra as the breed originated in Egypt and Salukis generally give off a regal vibe to me
Beautiful dogs. Thank you for sharing
Thanks so much for this video. I have always loved Salukis, but have never owned one or even been around one very much other than at Dog Shows. I would own one or ten in a heartbeat. Thanks again for the video.
Gorgeous dogs!
This video was very informative. Thank you.
I have a Lurcher, she is a Saluki cross whippet, But she's extremely Saluki dominant. Most don't even beleive me when I tell them she's a lurcher. She's the most Human dog in the world. If you smile at her, she squints her eyes and smiles back. She always steals food off the counter whenever possible and claims ownership of the couch whenever she can. She lives with a Bichon and Another Lurcher (Woolfhound cross Pointer)
I love this breed
Stunning dogs
The Game of Thrones names are awesome! You're on a roll Z I can't wait for this channel to really blow up.
5 Salukis!!! So mani frands! Eye am Whippet and eye aproof of dis video! 🐎
Make one about Afghan Hounds!😍😭🐶
Thanks for this video! We're on our way to a meet and greet to adopt a saluki mix. Fingers crossed that he's a good fit!
Was he?
Yay im so happy you did a Saluki video! Love it!!
Great video!!! Love every video you make! This is one of my faves!
Gorgeous dogs.
Funny they have GOT names! I always though Viserys Targaryen reminded me of a Saluki. He was a horrible, but these dogs are stunning. Once I move out of the city I'm getting one
Are we not going to talk about the amazing names of these dogs, they named their salukis after Game of Thrones characters. John, Aria, Khaleesi, and Missandei.
Came here to say that. Lol funny people
Omg
Pretty overrated imo
i guess u just want to talk about game of thrones xD
its not just the dogs its the cats
Adored our Saluki, she was very nurturant and mothered two stray kittens and also a jack russel puppy. . Is her huge.y but I am now too old to consider taking on another.
Awesome video, very elegant dogs!
i loved this so much!!!!
My mother’s side of the family is into showing, like showing dogs and we own Salukis. Currently we own 5, we didn’t train them to not chase things or bark or chew things or anything else, but we did train them to sit, lay down, stay, etc. they are truly magnificent creatures, and a huge part to me is that they all have such unique personalities. They grow strong bonds and make social groups, it’s beautiful to own one. Truly like living with royalty. My siblings and I must have helped grow them to be used to kids, so I would say if they’ve been around kids their whole lives, they will be friendly towards them. My family used to own 6 Salukis and if we still had twilight we would’ve had 7. We own one smooth Saluki while the rest are all feathered, Salukis are also very good at turning fast. Our Salukis chase each other around the yard switching between who’s being chased. Sometimes, if it’s just two in the yard, Anthem and Cisco will chase each other flipping back and forth until they stumble away or have to go inside. Sense Salukis are sight hounds, they are very observant, but one of ours, JL, often stares at the tv watching it. It’s very true that Salukis are couch lovers, so to help them we made a rule that they can only be on the couch if they are on a blanket or someone’s lap. This rule is broken by Anthem and occasionally shimmer.
I love the saluki. Their ears are adorable
Poetry in motion.
Aye have a Saluki cross coming over from Dubai this week , cant wait
I was in Estonia this year competing in the Lure Coursing Championships with my Saluki and when I was in the city people would frequently stop me and ask for pictures because ''she looked like a princess'' so yeah, like living with royalty :)
This is one of my favorite if not my favorite dog breeds. I hope to own one one day but it's hard to find one in georgia
Lovely to see your video! I used to have a Black and Tan female Saluki when my children were small, it was an ideal dog for children. She loved to run on the beaches here in South Africa and was very much befriended to our other dogs. And yes, it is a privilege to own a Saluki! Unfortunately I live on a farm now, there it would be not a good idea to keep a Saluki because their hunting instinct is very strong. My Saluki girl Shirvan will be always in my heart!
drinking game: take a shot every time she interrupts him.
me: *gets drunk*
She’s the alpha
@@Coachat she's just a wife
Wow, this inspired me to get a saluki and borzoi! Thanks!
I got what I thought was a great Pyrenees but as she grew it was obvious she wasn't purebred. Did a DNA test on her and she's got Saluki in her. Not much but it explains her structure, her bark and whine sound, she's 75% pyrenees but she has almost all the characteristics of a Saluki. It's nice to finally understand why she's the way she is.
I had 3 greyhounds and fostered many. At the dog park, when there were little dogs running around, I would simply put basket muzzles on the greys. That way I knew no one would get hurt if they chased.
“You can live in a apartment or condo and have a Saluki” Thank you for clarifying I need this dog XD
good job Dashan
Keep up the great work 👌you should check out the Azawakh 💖 number 1 sighthound imho
I love these. Wish I have space or a big farm. I would love to have them.

I was so happy to vote against dog racing!
So you like greyhounds... But not racing.. wtf
@@spoderman5481 Greyhounds are abused and killed in the racing industry and it is considered abusive. They live in poor conditions. Do research.
@@houseoftheshepherddogs7944 abuse and being killed = abusive, no shit. Letting a race hound chase a rabbit or rag or whatever they use isn't abuse tho, you can't force em to run, I'd they don't wanna run, they won't, I see nothing wrong with letting them race. Any breed can be abused, its not just sporting and working Dogs. Most toy breeds are inside a house all day and are overweight, that's abuse, letting a sighthound do what it's meant to do, run, is not
yes and the fact Florida voted to ban racing will have a massive impact, in a short time the 4000BC history of the greyhound could become extinct!
people will stop breeding!
the people of Florida should have voted against greyhounds being used by US forces as war dogs!
Ssounds just like any sight hound.
I just noticed you talked about attacks from Saluki's. In my experience these attacks are pack driven and they like to tell young dogs how to behave!
Saluki is my favourite dog breed
They would be the super models of the dog world lol.. just beautiful for no good reason...
Afghans still hold that title but yes they are beautiful and very elegant but so are Afghans. I have a greyhound who I adore as he has such a quirky persona

REALLY enjoyed this video❣️
Holy shit, this poor guy.
Your comments about Salukis are exactly what I think about them. Had 3of them and fell in love with each one one after the other. I want to be a Saluki in my next life. Lost my last one last year ( brain tumor) and feel my life so empty without him. Hope to get another one in a few months. Beaches are not the same without a saluki.
