My brother bought a salvaged buick for $250 Never changed the oil, drove it for a year before spinning out in the snow and getting it stuck in a ditch. Got it out of the ditch and drove it across 3 states on the same tank of gas. That $250 car outlasted 2 of my vehicles.

I bought a LeSabre in a weird financial time, and it ended up being the most reliable car I've ever owned. Old Buicks aren't lookers, but they're absolutely amazing to drive on long distances.
I can't agree more. We bought our 99 LeSabre in 2008, and got another 9 years out of her before we laid her to rest. Aside from a fuel pump, brake lines and the engine mounts going at the end, never let us down, most reliable car we've ever owned. You can see a video of her on my channel. Now we have a '94 Roadmaster - incomparable ride, V8 Power, Luxury AND economy, yes you can have it all when engineers do it right. Guess I'm a Buick man!...:o) Cheers! Bellarmine

My dad drove one of these for years as the family beater. I drove an 01 Camaro while I was in college. I had to get the clutch replaced on the Camaro, so dad let me borrow the Park Avenue while the Camaro was getting the new clutch. I couldn’t believe how much fun that car was to drive, it really had a ton of power and the ride was incredible! When it came time for us to swap cars again, we both wanted to keep each other’s rides 😂

As a father of a 15 year old I find myself hunting for her first car. The ex pointed at a Kia Sportage for $3900 (um no) and saw a Jeep Grand Cherokee but with 200k and $4k, not so much. So I have both the ex and my daughter talked into a 3800 car regardless of the brand for around $2000 and have 6 options so far. Thank you again for reminding me of the awesome that is Buick!

A 1992 Buick park avenue I bought for $500 was one of my best purchases ever. Sure it was filled with drugs from the previous owner, but it had dual climate control and felt like a couch!

@Beardio U right bro, i live in the city where every corner has a stop sign or a light, therefore i dont go that fast, & i drive locally, nothing far at all... When the engine temp starts to look like its inclining past the 3 qtr mark i turn the car off for a good minute, but usually it will stay in the mid level temp.

Old buicks are the best. Loved my 2000 LeSabre with the 3800 v6. Great comfy cruiser car that did the job and was easy to maintain. I thought it looked nice. I like the park avenue also as well as the Gen 2 park Ave.

Yes, inspecting the undercarriage and lower body panels is important, and there are actually some really poor design aspects to these like the steering-fluid pumps and access that can cost a significant amount of money to get replaced if they fail. My wife worked at a Buick dealership and the percentage sold that required multiple visits to the shop for repair soon after was ridiculous. They should definitely be cheap.

Great video! You reminded me about everything I absolutely loved about my 1996 LeSabre. My dad picked that car out for me when I was 16, and...I cried when I saw it. Not happy tears, either - I thought it was so ugly. I was angry when I got into the driver's seat - but by the time we got home, my attitude had completely changed. It was comfortable to sit in and drive, and it had so much power despite looking like...that! I kept that car for 11 years and honestly still sometimes regret selling it. My mid tier modern sedan doesn't handle half as well and is way fussier to maintain.

So we instead it cars like these that are still good and still got plenty of years left in them. This was the first car I ever drove. I loved that thing, because it was a tank, and the torque steer was hilarious. I'll be honest...I wouldn't mind finding one and having it just to have a classic boat.
Caleb Miller me too. Mine didn't torque steer much as far as I recall. Granted, mine had the Gran Touring Suspension package, which made her handle pretty well for a boat! I miss it a lot.
My first car was a 2000 Buick Century that my grandparents gave to me. I actually liked the car. It rides very smooth and was super comfortable. It handled like a boat but I never felt unsafe. The transmission was also very slushy but remember the target audience was older people for the most part. It wasn’t a race car by any means, but it was a fantastic cruiser on the highway, especially on long commutes. The interior was plain and basic but didn’t feel super cheap. It was also dead silent inside the cabin even at high speeds. It got decent gas mileage and I haven’t had too many major problems. I did have to replace all of the speakers, radio, the horn, flush the coolant system, replace the driver-rear brake line, replace front wheel bearings and front left sway bar and suspension system as well as the bumper and driver front fender (someone hit the car). I still have it as a backup car just in case. I feel like it is a good commuter car. It is more comfortable than a Camry or a Civic.
My son started out with one of these and let his brother drive it during high school after the older one went to college. They both loved it. When I realized I needed something softer than my MINI Cooper S (super charged) because my old body couldn't take the firm suspension any more, I remembered the Park Avenue. I ended up with a 2007 Lacrosse with an un-blown v-6, but the ride and seats with all the supports were there and my back is so much better. You are so right about these cars. I'm looking for a second as my bacup car it is so good.
I own a 99 Park Avenue Ultra with over 250k miles on it. I love it! Always called Buicks the working class Cadillac. My 30 yr old son has a La Sabre that fits his 6'3" frame comfortably. The only money I've had to put into it in the last 5 years is new tires and a MAF sensor. 3800 Supercharge motor runs so smooth you can't tell it's on til I gun it! Sound system is awesome, heated seats and climate control a/c, vanity mirrors and CPU in instrument panel readings work for me like a secretary. I've owned Cadillacs and other Buicks but the Ultra is my favorite.
Gotta love the old 3800 GM cars. I had a normally aspirated Park Avenue, and the thing would sometimes read 999 (KILOMETERS!!) to empty. That's phenomenal fuel economy from a fairly large V6. And, like you said, parts were so cheap. Not that anything ever broke. It really is a smart buy for someone looking for a cheap car.
Im on my second 3800 Series 2 supercharged car. Very reliable drive train if you leave them mostly stock. Otherwise the transmission becomes unhappy. Ive never been stranded by either. Body rot is what takes them out up here in the north east.
Ryan Burke they do get some rest I'll make that but they don't get it like the bonneville's for the gtp's where the Rockers are completely gone floorboards about to fall out when you're rolling down the road you feel a really major draft and if you live in a cold climate Things become smaller when speed increases Buick did use different paint primer clear coat that's the reason why they don't rust out and then normal common areas like a GTP Bonneville
My experience was first with an 01 GTP. 152k miles and rotted rockers. I live in New Hampshire and work on Massachusetts. I drove the 01 GTP to 180k and replaced it with an 03 GTP with 117k miles. I am again suffering from rocker rot almost 4 years later and 143k miles. The Grand Prix and Bonneville definitely get extra body cladding that holds the road salts. Luckily ive avoided the rear shock tower rot from the addition of plastic wheel well liners in 99 or 00. And they figured out the gas door rot. Probably also helped by the fender liners. I also dont dislike the 97+ Park Ave Ultra. I dont find them as "bubbly" as he says. And I definitely wouldnt mind a Riviera. Of course the gearing isnt the same as the GTP or Regal GS but still a damn tank.

Vankicks Did you have the plastic intake gasket and egr stovepipe addressed on your engines? This is what typically causes hydro lock and premature 3800 series ii death
Best cheap car I ever owned. I has a 1991and 1995 and I took them both to nearly three hundred thousand miles. and the killing part is that they both were running when I got rid of them. They both had broken axels. when can be repaired for less then 200 bucks.

As an owner of a 96 Buick Roadmaster I agree. These things are TANKS! Mine has the LT1 V8 (not a V6 like every other buick!) and is RWD. Its the biggest sleeper car ever, but it sure does drink gasoline!

Lavar balls son Keep in mind that there's a lot to go wrong in them, and that gas costs add up. You won't get over 20mpg. After 50k miles that's almost 4000$ more than something that gets 30mpg. My Buick had a ton of issues. When I gave up on it the Toyota that replaced it has thoroughly payed itself off.
Lavar balls son A full 18 gallon tank lasts for 4 days, low quality transmission and torque converter. I had a 2003 Buick park Avenue ultra. I took proper care and drove slowly. However the torque converter and transmission failed at 170k miles. Got rid of it and got a toyota celica gt. I couldnt be happier. 27mpg, accelerates twice as fast with a 1.8L vs the 3.8L supercharged. It now has 189k miles. Had to only change oil so far. :)
Enayet Khan News flash Most transmissions fail between 150k and 250k. Those had decent transmissions. If you drive with a lead foot, or live in hilly areas, any transmission will likely fail around 170k.
droopmodMRC i bought the car with 150k miles on it. It was from Michigan. Maybe the previous owner drove it rough. The car was really good in all other aspects to be honest. And also maybe that specific car had faulty parts in it.

I got a used 2000 lesabre. 2000 bucks. Just needs a arm and wheel.hub work, sway bar inlinks, and a motor mount, but even that's not to severe yet. Freshly changed oil and redone ac. I've had to replace air filter. License plate bulbs, 3 taillight bulbs. Soon to be driver then signal. I'd say not bad.

I had both a 94 and 95 supercharged Park Avenue as well as a 95 supercharged Riviera. All were good reliable cars that were fun yet comfy. I miss my 94 Ultra the most, however, because it was all black and was the only car like it in my neighborhood.
Yes, park aves are great cars. Had a 97 blue on blue ultra. The transmission ended up failing at a time when I didn't have the funds to replace it so I had to let her go :(. Its amazing how cheap these cars are. So much for the money.
Growing up on a used car dealership, I have driven and been in so many of these cars. Every edition GM made I’ve driven, and I absolutely love them. I have an unhealthy attraction to so called “grandpa” cars. But damn, they’re so much more comfortable and luxurious to drive than other European cars of the same class. These kinds of cars will never be topped in my heart.
The one repair that you may need more than once (if you have the 3.8) on your way to 300,000 miles is the intake plenum that tends to slightly melt and dump antifreeze into the cylinders. Plastic plenums...an idea we could maybe have lived without.

My dad had a twin to this car. I loved that little license plate slot. Had fun asking my kids to change plates on it. And asking them to fill up the tank on my '56 Nomad & my '58 Impala. It's like handing a millennial a rotary telephone and asking them to make a call..... Love to stump them!
My buddy has 2 of these. Hoovie is right. These Buicks, (and the Grand Marquis, imho) are the best used - car deals ever. And no one knows this. Everyone I know thinks they're being clever wanting a used Toyota or Honda, and they pay top dollar for a worn out POS, because thats all they can afford. But these Buicks are better because they are super durable, comfortable and CHEAP.
the problem is that Toyota and Honda has good resale value.. they do make cars that last and as soon as people got wise to this the resale value shot up like a politician on viagra... the thing with Buick, old Cadillac and Lincoln is that old people bought them and most old people know how to take care of cars where as nowadays someone who is a non car guy may buy a new car and never change the oil or do any maintenance until he/she sell the car to buy a new one (these old Buicks wouldn't survive that).... a friend of mine was going to buying a used Prius to get to work and back, the car had had 150k miles and owner "changed the oil every year" (the car was 4yrs you do the math) also never changed plugs (i was amazed it was still going) and tires was changed... this is why Toyota used a timing chain for the engine, they know the type of people that would be buying their cars... lol
hmshyperion You're right! The Grand Marquis/Crown Vic twins are reliable as well. Police dept in my home city still have a few Crown Vics in their fleet.

I’m a cash guy, always will be (financiers don’t need my help getting rich 😉), and to this vid’s point, you get WAY more for your money with one of these than some 4cyl lawnmower cloth seat Camry or Accord. My first car is a 2000 Buick Century and I absolute love it. It was a hand me down from my grandma with only 58k miles. I've put nearly 75000 miles on it with no issues, just normal wear parts. Even after all those miles and getting into an accidental that bent the radiator and engine cradle, it ran and drove like nothing one it got bent back into place. I took it on 3 road trips, once from Michigan to Indiana and twice from Michigan to Tennessee, all with no problems. These Buicks aren't without some issues tho: theres the plastic intake gasket issue that plagued the 3.1s, 3.4s, and even 3.8s, as well as the weak 4T65E transmission with shifting issues. However, these are all fairly cheap fixable issues that once dealt with these cars are dead reliable: replacement intake gaskets are now aluminum and a $40 shift kit from amazon solves the transmission shifting problem.
I just recently bought a 99 lesaber and put a whole lot of classic chrome car parts on it and i felt like it was the baddest car in the world definitely made for smokers me and my friends hotbox it and use all 4 ash trays in the car (center, passenger door, both rear doors) unfortunately i got into an accident about a week ago and bent the front end a bit but it took it like a champ and its still running strong the radiator was a beast no leaks or anything still i highly recommend buicks to anyone looking for a good reliable car for cheap

My 2000 Buick Park Avenue is the best first car I could ask for, I absolutely love it, $800 from my Grandma and I'm off to the races. I'm going to modify the exaust just because a Grampa car with an obnoxious exhaust will be hillarious. The Mustangs from the early 90s were 4 cylinders and these old Buicks got more horsepower😂😂
Yep that 3800 V6 was one of the best engines GM ever made. Reliable and inexpensive to maintain with just the right amount of power and great fuel economy for a large V6 engine. Sadly they discontinued them in 2008 because they were too good and they weren't making any money in repairs off of them lol. 😂😂😂😂
@@joshuamartindale868 The only 'problem' with the 3800 engines is that they usually outlast the car. (Not uncommon to log 250K-350K miles on one if it's well maintained.)
My friend got one when she was 20 and loved it. There were a few small broken things here and there, but it was a decently powered couch on wheels that actually rides really nice. Good luck in your search!
Hoovy is incorrect. If you are broke in ANY age group don't buy a car with unneeded luxuries such as power windows, air ride suspension and a V6! Buy a car with manual windows, manual seats, and a 4 CYLINDER! It is better on gas and there is less to break. Then again, I don't think Hoovy would expect many people to take his advice, as he frequently admits to being an idiot.
See I disagree. My first car was an 91 Mercury Grand Marquis. Power Everything. It was a pleasant place to be. Sure, some of it was broken, or eventually broke, but I learned how to fix some of it, and I learned to just deal with the rest of it being broken. And here is the real kicker. You Cant BUY those cars cheap anymore. According to auto trader, the cheapest car with under 100k miles is a loaded '03 Buick ($1200). The cheapest 'classically' cheap car, a 2006 Nissan Ultima (which is still power everything) is $3,300. Ask me which one Id want to drive every day?
One quirk with these cars is the glitchy way they drive through the front glass window of a strip mall business after confusing the break and gas pedals. With the turn signal flashing.
I just bought a 2000 Park Ave ultra for $2k, low miles, no rust, great cond, best car for my money ever! Dopey body style I admit, and you don't want to be the center rear passenger (very uncomfortable) but leather seats & every option imaginable AND everything still works, so no complaints.

I'm still loving my '03 Century with only 114k miles. Had to replace the head/intake gaskets, window regulators, high/low beam switch, but its like riding on a cloud, with 30mpg! I only hope to find a good used Ultra someday.
I've got as high as 32 mpg cruising the freeway in my 1998 Park Avenue..... at 80-85 mph! You simply MUST use the cruise control if you don't want to get a ticket in one of these smooth riders!
Yeah, the panther platform is what those cars are, the ford crown vic, mercury grand marquise, and Lincoln town car. They are all the same car essentially and many of the parts especially with the mercury and ford are interchangable, also junk yards are full of old crown vics from cab companies, police departments, and rental companies so there is a huge supply of cheap used parts. The problem is the genie is out of the bottle on the panther platform and how good they are so their value and therefore prices have gone up. When it comes to maintenance the crown vic is a cheaper option than the Buick which didn't sell in nearly as large of numbers. Also the 3800 V6 is a really good engine but did have problems with blown head gaskets which lead to engine knocks and warped valves, it was not a problem of design, but the result of owners not looking at the users manuel and putting water in the radiator when low on coolient during summer months, with most cars this isn't a problem since it isn't winter but with the 3800 you had to use the manufactured recommended anti-freeze for coolient because water would turn the rubber used in the head gaskets into a sludge that would collect in the oil and sludge up the valves causing the head gasket to blow and the valves to warp. Make sure to get the engine on any 3800 looked at to make sure this had not happened, if it is properly maintained the 3800 is a good motor.
As an European, I don't understand why cars like this are so underrated in US. In Europe, people sometimes pay quite a bit for these, that's with expensive gas and ridiculous parts prices. I hate the modern "sporty everything" or "MEGA SHIP SUV" bullshit models. Cars should be comfortable and "nice".

This is an awesome video. I picked up a clean as hell '92 Park Avenue Base with only 82K original miles on it in '15. Fell in love with it. Plus, the air ride suspension in the rear still works, mostly.. It has surely had its fair share of quirky problems, but I absolute love the beast.
I bought one with 110,000 miles, I got the transmission rebuilt at around 170,000 miles and I drove it with no major problems up to 285,000 miles and the only reason I got rid of it was because some idiot broke into it and vandalized its dashboard after they could not find anything valuable in it.
I cannot express how much I love those Buick PAUs. Unless they changed up the wheels for '96, the Ultra should have a turbine style alloy wheel. In any case, I adore this car and it looks to be in fantastic condition. Please take care of it.
u are right austin99etc. we had a black 96 with the turbines wheels. also missing is the rear seat vanity mirrors, although that could be a delete bc this one has a sunroof. i inherited that car and put over 200k on it.
Sunroof cars didnt come with vanity mirrors, and the wheels on this car are from a base Park Ave, the offered the 15" with large center cap and the 16" grand touring
Only the Gran Touring package had the turbine alloy wheels. The base suspension package and the Dynaride package had hubcaps. Mine had the Gran Touring Package and the turbine wheels, which really made the car look nice.
h2wntsu yep. That's how both my 94 and 95 Ultras were. Sunroof and Gran Touring package with no rear vanity mirrors, which didn't bother me. After all, I was the only one who drove it and I hardly had anyone ride in the back.
As a millennial driver of a 99 LeSabre still going strong at 170k miles I absolutely love this video. Almost as much as I love my LeSabre and its amazing volume knob and the incessant beeping of the climate control.

My first car was a 1996 Buick LeSabre wow I got it for free from my dad because it was his old car it only left me on the side of the road twice once because it was really really cold out and I was a new driver and left the gas cap off moisture got inside and when I finally put the gas cap back on and it started to sputter and died and the second time it needed a a water pump. Those good old 3.8 L engines are quite reliable and somewhat powerful for a car like that and every once in a while you’ll come across a supercharged model a lot of them are extremely comfortable and come with a lot of bells and whistles for cars of that era yet again I agree with you 100 percent
WOW, I am so glad to see this review. I have been talking about old Buicks being a great value for years and everyone (But those who have bought one!) laugh. But the cream of the crop is the 1993 - 1996 Roadmaster with the 5.7L LT-1 V8. Those big V8 rear wheel drive Buicks are super reliable, quite powerful and have an amazingly smooth ride. The LT-1 is actually superior to the V6 in reliability.
The Buick Roadmaster Wagon and Sedan are almost as powerful as their Chevrolet Caprice Wagon/Caprice/Caprice Classic/Impala SS/9C1 cousins, archangele1.
they actually are pretty close in estimated mileage believe it or not. I had a roadmaster and I would average about 26-28mpg on the highway at a steady 65mph. I just got 32mpg in my 92 lesabre this past weekend going 65mph. Nowhere was this car ever rated or estimated for that. It's all about how fast you drive. The v8 could probably pull 30mpg if you kept it at 60-62mph I really think the EPA's estimated mileage for highway is based on 75mph, which I see no reason to drive that fast. I will literally get passed by the same truck on the interstate numerous times. Why?? They have to stop for gas every town because they are going 80mph. So at the end of the day we end up at the same destination at the same time. Driving faster than 65 doesn't get you to your destination any quicker. All it does is cost you more money.
My 2012 Buick was 8500, 131,000 miles, and was a 'garage car' from the dealership which meant it had no issues and it barely had any scratches and the inside cosmetically had no issues and all the internal buttons work perfectly, the key fob works perfectly, the drive is hella smooth...Like there IS NO ISSUES...and it was pretty affordable and I'm 17 and I'm paying for it by myself(my first car) the dealership upgraded the tires...it has the V6 engine 3.6L, premium 1 model,6 speed shift
This is what my parents have owned for the past 45 years. I really like the "noise and smell" guide. My mother was always reporting new noises and "funny smells" to my brother and I, and wanted us to try to fix them. Buick has tried to attract younger buyers for years, but with only limited success.
I just found a 96 park avenue ultra with 166k for only $1500, now for the next 2-3 months imma work my ass off and save up for it *update* I did not get the park avenue but I did get a lesbate for $1000 😌👌🏻

Never changed the oil, drove it for a year before spinning out in the snow and getting it stuck in a ditch. Got it out of the ditch and drove it across 3 states on the same tank of gas. That $250 car outlasted 2 of my vehicles.

I can't agree more. We bought our 99 LeSabre in 2008, and got another 9 years out of her before we laid her to rest. Aside from a fuel pump, brake lines and the engine mounts going at the end, never let us down, most reliable car we've ever owned. You can see a video of her on my channel. Now we have a '94 Roadmaster - incomparable ride, V8 Power, Luxury AND economy, yes you can have it all when engineers do it right. Guess I'm a Buick man!...:o) Cheers! Bellarmine

My dad drove one of these for years as the family beater. I drove an 01 Camaro while I was in college. I had to get the clutch replaced on the Camaro, so dad let me borrow the Park Avenue while the Camaro was getting the new clutch. I couldn’t believe how much fun that car was to drive, it really had a ton of power and the ride was incredible! When it came time for us to swap cars again, we both wanted to keep each other’s rides 😂

As a father of a 15 year old I find myself hunting for her first car. The ex pointed at a Kia Sportage for $3900 (um no) and saw a Jeep Grand Cherokee but with 200k and $4k, not so much. So I have both the ex and my daughter talked into a 3800 car regardless of the brand for around $2000 and have 6 options so far. Thank you again for reminding me of the awesome that is Buick!

When the engine temp starts to look like its inclining past the 3 qtr mark i turn the car off for a good minute, but usually it will stay in the mid level temp.

Yes, inspecting the undercarriage and lower body panels is important, and there are actually some really poor design aspects to these like the steering-fluid pumps and access that can cost a significant amount of money to get replaced if they fail. My wife worked at a Buick dealership and the percentage sold that required multiple visits to the shop for repair soon after was ridiculous. They should definitely be cheap.

Great video! You reminded me about everything I absolutely loved about my 1996 LeSabre. My dad picked that car out for me when I was 16, and...I cried when I saw it. Not happy tears, either - I thought it was so ugly. I was angry when I got into the driver's seat - but by the time we got home, my attitude had completely changed. It was comfortable to sit in and drive, and it had so much power despite looking like...that! I kept that car for 11 years and honestly still sometimes regret selling it. My mid tier modern sedan doesn't handle half as well and is way fussier to maintain.

This was the first car I ever drove. I loved that thing, because it was a tank, and the torque steer was hilarious. I'll be honest...I wouldn't mind finding one and having it just to have a classic boat.
Caleb Miller me too. Mine didn't torque steer much as far as I recall. Granted, mine had the Gran Touring Suspension package, which made her handle pretty well for a boat! I miss it a lot.
My first car was a 2000 Buick Century that my grandparents gave to me. I actually liked the car. It rides very smooth and was super comfortable. It handled like a boat but I never felt unsafe. The transmission was also very slushy but remember the target audience was older people for the most part. It wasn’t a race car by any means, but it was a fantastic cruiser on the highway, especially on long commutes. The interior was plain and basic but didn’t feel super cheap. It was also dead silent inside the cabin even at high speeds. It got decent gas mileage and I haven’t had too many major problems. I did have to replace all of the speakers, radio, the horn, flush the coolant system, replace the driver-rear brake line, replace front wheel bearings and front left sway bar and suspension system as well as the bumper and driver front fender (someone hit the car). I still have it as a backup car just in case. I feel like it is a good commuter car. It is more comfortable than a Camry or a Civic.
My son started out with one of these and let his brother drive it during high school after the older one went to college. They both loved it. When I realized I needed something softer than my MINI Cooper S (super charged) because my old body couldn't take the firm suspension any more, I remembered the Park Avenue. I ended up with a 2007 Lacrosse with an un-blown v-6, but the ride and seats with all the supports were there and my back is so much better. You are so right about these cars. I'm looking for a second as my bacup car it is so good.

I own a 99 Park Avenue Ultra with over 250k miles on it. I love it! Always called Buicks the working class Cadillac. My 30 yr old son has a La Sabre that fits his 6'3" frame comfortably. The only money I've had to put into it in the last 5 years is new tires and a MAF sensor. 3800 Supercharge motor runs so smooth you can't tell it's on til I gun it! Sound system is awesome, heated seats and climate control a/c, vanity mirrors and CPU in instrument panel readings work for me like a secretary. I've owned Cadillacs and other Buicks but the Ultra is my favorite.
Gotta love the old 3800 GM cars. I had a normally aspirated Park Avenue, and the thing would sometimes read 999 (KILOMETERS!!) to empty. That's phenomenal fuel economy from a fairly large V6. And, like you said, parts were so cheap. Not that anything ever broke. It really is a smart buy for someone looking for a cheap car.
Im on my second 3800 Series 2 supercharged car. Very reliable drive train if you leave them mostly stock. Otherwise the transmission becomes unhappy. Ive never been stranded by either. Body rot is what takes them out up here in the north east.
Ryan Burke they do get some rest I'll make that but they don't get it like the bonneville's for the gtp's where the Rockers are completely gone floorboards about to fall out when you're rolling down the road you feel a really major draft and if you live in a cold climate Things become smaller when speed increases Buick did use different paint primer clear coat that's the reason why they don't rust out and then normal common areas like a GTP Bonneville
My experience was first with an 01 GTP. 152k miles and rotted rockers. I live in New Hampshire and work on Massachusetts. I drove the 01 GTP to 180k and replaced it with an 03 GTP with 117k miles. I am again suffering from rocker rot almost 4 years later and 143k miles. The Grand Prix and Bonneville definitely get extra body cladding that holds the road salts. Luckily ive avoided the rear shock tower rot from the addition of plastic wheel well liners in 99 or 00. And they figured out the gas door rot. Probably also helped by the fender liners. I also dont dislike the 97+ Park Ave Ultra. I dont find them as "bubbly" as he says. And I definitely wouldnt mind a Riviera. Of course the gearing isnt the same as the GTP or Regal GS but still a damn tank.

As an owner of a 96 Buick Roadmaster I agree. These things are TANKS! Mine has the LT1 V8 (not a V6 like every other buick!) and is RWD. Its the biggest sleeper car ever, but it sure does drink gasoline!

Keep in mind that there's a lot to go wrong in them, and that gas costs add up. You won't get over 20mpg.
After 50k miles that's almost 4000$ more than something that gets 30mpg.
My Buick had a ton of issues. When I gave up on it the Toyota that replaced it has thoroughly payed itself off.

Lavar balls son A full 18 gallon tank lasts for 4 days, low quality transmission and torque converter. I had a 2003 Buick park Avenue ultra. I took proper care and drove slowly. However the torque converter and transmission failed at 170k miles. Got rid of it and got a toyota celica gt. I couldnt be happier. 27mpg, accelerates twice as fast with a 1.8L vs the 3.8L supercharged. It now has 189k miles. Had to only change oil so far. :)
Enayet Khan News flash Most transmissions fail between 150k and 250k. Those had decent transmissions. If you drive with a lead foot, or live in hilly areas, any transmission will likely fail around 170k.
droopmodMRC i bought the car with 150k miles on it. It was from Michigan. Maybe the previous owner drove it rough. The car was really good in all other aspects to be honest. And also maybe that specific car had faulty parts in it.

Super Charged4life I bought A 2001 saturn SL for 1400 and it replaced a 1996 accord wagon. Saturn's are totaly underrated cars I call it and the revised ions a best kept secrets, all mine does is burn oil at 167k miles

The 3800 v6 with a turbo was one the best engines ever manufactured by GM. The Buick Grand National was a beast!
There are turbo kits for this car which get up to 600 hp. The transmission will also have to be upgraded though, but what a sleeper!
I got a used 2000 lesabre. 2000 bucks. Just needs a arm and wheel.hub work, sway bar inlinks, and a motor mount, but even that's not to severe yet. Freshly changed oil and redone ac.

I had both a 94 and 95 supercharged Park Avenue as well as a 95 supercharged Riviera. All were good reliable cars that were fun yet comfy. I miss my 94 Ultra the most, however, because it was all black and was the only car like it in my neighborhood.

Yes, park aves are great cars. Had a 97 blue on blue ultra. The transmission ended up failing at a time when I didn't have the funds to replace it so I had to let her go :(. Its amazing how cheap these cars are. So much for the money.
Growing up on a used car dealership, I have driven and been in so many of these cars. Every edition GM made I’ve driven, and I absolutely love them. I have an unhealthy attraction to so called “grandpa” cars. But damn, they’re so much more comfortable and luxurious to drive than other European cars of the same class. These kinds of cars will never be topped in my heart.

The one repair that you may need more than once (if you have the 3.8) on your way to 300,000 miles is the intake plenum that tends to slightly
melt and dump antifreeze into the cylinders. Plastic plenums...an idea we could maybe have lived without.

My buddy has 2 of these. Hoovie is right. These Buicks, (and the Grand Marquis, imho) are the best used - car deals ever. And no one knows this. Everyone I know thinks they're being clever wanting a used Toyota or Honda, and they pay top dollar for a worn out POS, because thats all they can afford. But these Buicks are better because they are super durable, comfortable and CHEAP.
the problem is that Toyota and Honda has good resale value.. they do make cars that last and as soon as people got wise to this the resale value shot up like a politician on viagra... the thing with Buick, old Cadillac and Lincoln is that old people bought them and most old people know how to take care of cars where as nowadays someone who is a non car guy may buy a new car and never change the oil or do any maintenance until he/she sell the car to buy a new one (these old Buicks wouldn't survive that)....
a friend of mine was going to buying a used Prius to get to work and back, the car had had 150k miles and owner "changed the oil every year" (the car was 4yrs you do the math) also never changed plugs (i was amazed it was still going) and tires was changed... this is why Toyota used a timing chain for the engine, they know the type of people that would be buying their cars... lol
hmshyperion You're right! The Grand Marquis/Crown Vic twins are reliable as well. Police dept in my home city still have a few Crown Vics in their fleet.

I’m a cash guy, always will be (financiers don’t need my help getting rich 😉), and to this vid’s point, you get WAY more for your money with one of these than some 4cyl lawnmower cloth seat Camry or Accord. My first car is a 2000 Buick Century and I absolute love it. It was a hand me down from my grandma with only 58k miles. I've put nearly 75000 miles on it with no issues, just normal wear parts. Even after all those miles and getting into an accidental that bent the radiator and engine cradle, it ran and drove like nothing one it got bent back into place. I took it on 3 road trips, once from Michigan to Indiana and twice from Michigan to Tennessee, all with no problems. These Buicks aren't without some issues tho: theres the plastic intake gasket issue that plagued the 3.1s, 3.4s, and even 3.8s, as well as the weak 4T65E transmission with shifting issues. However, these are all fairly cheap fixable issues that once dealt with these cars are dead reliable: replacement intake gaskets are now aluminum and a $40 shift kit from amazon solves the transmission shifting problem.

I just recently bought a 99 lesaber and put a whole lot of classic chrome car parts on it and i felt like it was the baddest car in the world definitely made for smokers me and my friends hotbox it and use all 4 ash trays in the car (center, passenger door, both rear doors) unfortunately i got into an accident about a week ago and bent the front end a bit but it took it like a champ and its still running strong the radiator was a beast no leaks or anything still i highly recommend buicks to anyone looking for a good reliable car for cheap

Yep that 3800 V6 was one of the best engines GM ever made. Reliable and inexpensive to maintain with just the right amount of power and great fuel economy for a large V6 engine. Sadly they discontinued them in 2008 because they were too good and they weren't making any money in repairs off of them lol. 😂😂😂😂

A friend of mine has a 1985 Pontiac Parisienne. Like the Park Avenue, the interior is spacious and the seats are super comfortable.

Hoovy is incorrect. If you are broke in ANY age group don't buy a car with unneeded luxuries such as power windows, air ride suspension and a V6! Buy a car with manual windows, manual seats, and a 4 CYLINDER! It is better on gas and there is less to break. Then again, I don't think Hoovy would expect many people to take his advice, as he frequently admits to being an idiot.

See I disagree. My first car was an 91 Mercury Grand Marquis. Power Everything. It was a pleasant place to be. Sure, some of it was broken, or eventually broke, but I learned how to fix some of it, and I learned to just deal with the rest of it being broken.
And here is the real kicker. You Cant BUY those cars cheap anymore. According to auto trader, the cheapest car with under 100k miles is a loaded '03 Buick ($1200). The cheapest 'classically' cheap car, a 2006 Nissan Ultima (which is still power everything) is $3,300. Ask me which one Id want to drive every day?
One quirk with these cars is the glitchy way they drive through the front glass window of a strip mall business after confusing the break and gas pedals. With the turn signal flashing.

I just bought a 2000 Park Ave ultra for $2k, low miles, no rust, great cond, best car for my money ever! Dopey body style I admit, and you don't want to be the center rear passenger (very uncomfortable) but leather seats & every option imaginable AND everything still works, so no complaints.
Only Hoovie could say a buick from 1996 was one of the coolest and make it seem so cool to own one 👍

I'm still loving my '03 Century with only 114k miles. Had to replace the head/intake gaskets, window regulators, high/low beam switch, but its like riding on a cloud, with 30mpg! I only hope to find a good used Ultra someday.

I've got as high as 32 mpg cruising the freeway in my 1998 Park Avenue..... at 80-85 mph! You simply MUST use the cruise control if you don't want to get a ticket in one of these smooth riders!

Yeah, the panther platform is what those cars are, the ford crown vic, mercury grand marquise, and Lincoln town car. They are all the same car essentially and many of the parts especially with the mercury and ford are interchangable, also junk yards are full of old crown vics from cab companies, police departments, and rental companies so there is a huge supply of cheap used parts. The problem is the genie is out of the bottle on the panther platform and how good they are so their value and therefore prices have gone up. When it comes to maintenance the crown vic is a cheaper option than the Buick which didn't sell in nearly as large of numbers. Also the 3800 V6 is a really good engine but did have problems with blown head gaskets which lead to engine knocks and warped valves, it was not a problem of design, but the result of owners not looking at the users manuel and putting water in the radiator when low on coolient during summer months, with most cars this isn't a problem since it isn't winter but with the 3800 you had to use the manufactured recommended anti-freeze for coolient because water would turn the rubber used in the head gaskets into a sludge that would collect in the oil and sludge up the valves causing the head gasket to blow and the valves to warp. Make sure to get the engine on any 3800 looked at to make sure this had not happened, if it is properly maintained the 3800 is a good motor.
I drove a crown Vic for 8 years and never had a problem with it. Plus the rear wheel drive made it fun to do Burn outs.

As an European, I don't understand why cars like this are so underrated in US. In Europe, people sometimes pay quite a bit for these, that's with expensive gas and ridiculous parts prices. I hate the modern "sporty everything" or "MEGA SHIP SUV" bullshit models. Cars should be comfortable and "nice".

This is an awesome video. I picked up a clean as hell '92 Park Avenue Base with only 82K original miles on it in '15. Fell in love with it. Plus, the air ride suspension in the rear still works, mostly.. It has surely had its fair share of quirky problems, but I absolute love the beast.
You can get a coil spring conversion kit for it and eliminate the air ride. It will pay for itself.
i loves my park avenue. had to sell. have a camery now and it works good for driving delivery but once i start college i hope to get a new park ave.

I bought one with 110,000 miles, I got the transmission rebuilt at around 170,000 miles and I drove it with no major problems up to 285,000 miles and the only reason I got rid of it was because some idiot broke into it and vandalized its dashboard after they could not find anything valuable in it.
Rebuilding the transmission is not a major problem at all

I cannot express how much I love those Buick PAUs. Unless they changed up the wheels for '96, the Ultra should have a turbine style alloy wheel. In any case, I adore this car and it looks to be in fantastic condition. Please take care of it.
u are right austin99etc. we had a black 96 with the turbines wheels. also missing is the rear seat vanity mirrors, although that could be a delete bc this one has a sunroof. i inherited that car and put over 200k on it.
Sunroof cars didnt come with vanity mirrors, and the wheels on this car are from a base Park Ave, the offered the 15" with large center cap and the 16" grand touring
Only the Gran Touring package had the turbine alloy wheels. The base suspension package and the Dynaride package had hubcaps. Mine had the Gran Touring Package and the turbine wheels, which really made the car look nice.
h2wntsu yep. That's how both my 94 and 95 Ultras were. Sunroof and Gran Touring package with no rear vanity mirrors, which didn't bother me. After all, I was the only one who drove it and I hardly had anyone ride in the back.
As a millennial driver of a 99 LeSabre still going strong at 170k miles I absolutely love this video. Almost as much as I love my LeSabre and its amazing volume knob and the incessant beeping of the climate control.

My first car was a 1996 Buick LeSabre wow I got it for free from my dad because it was his old car it only left me on the side of the road twice once because it was really really cold out and I was a new driver and left the gas cap off moisture got inside and when I finally put the gas cap back on and it started to sputter and died and the second time it needed a a water pump. Those good old 3.8 L engines are quite reliable and somewhat powerful for a car like that and every once in a while you’ll come across a supercharged model a lot of them are extremely comfortable and come with a lot of bells and whistles for cars of that era yet again I agree with you 100 percent

WOW, I am so glad to see this review. I have been talking about old Buicks being a great value for years and everyone (But those who have bought one!) laugh. But the cream of the crop is the 1993 - 1996 Roadmaster with the 5.7L LT-1 V8. Those big V8 rear wheel
drive Buicks are super reliable, quite powerful and have an amazingly smooth ride. The LT-1 is actually superior to the V6 in reliability.
It's gotta be the LT1 Estate Wagon though. And without the nasty wood trim.
The Buick Roadmaster Wagon and Sedan are almost as powerful as their Chevrolet Caprice Wagon/Caprice/Caprice Classic/Impala SS/9C1 cousins, archangele1.

they actually are pretty close in estimated mileage believe it or not. I had a roadmaster and I would average about 26-28mpg on the highway at a steady 65mph.
I just got 32mpg in my 92 lesabre this past weekend going 65mph. Nowhere was this car ever rated or estimated for that. It's all about how fast you drive. The v8 could probably pull 30mpg if you kept it at 60-62mph
I really think the EPA's estimated mileage for highway is based on 75mph, which I see no reason to drive that fast. I will literally get passed by the same truck on the interstate numerous times. Why?? They have to stop for gas every town because they are going 80mph. So at the end of the day we end up at the same destination at the same time. Driving faster than 65 doesn't get you to your destination any quicker. All it does is cost you more money.
My 2012 Buick was 8500, 131,000 miles, and was a 'garage car' from the dealership which meant it had no issues and it barely had any scratches and the inside cosmetically had no issues and all the internal buttons work perfectly, the key fob works perfectly, the drive is hella smooth...Like there IS NO ISSUES...and it was pretty affordable and I'm 17 and I'm paying for it by myself(my first car) the dealership upgraded the tires...it has the V6 engine 3.6L, premium 1 model,6 speed shift
This is what my parents have owned for the past 45 years. I really like the "noise and smell" guide. My mother was always reporting new noises and "funny smells" to my brother and I, and wanted us to try to fix them. Buick has tried to attract younger buyers for years, but with only limited success.
I just found a 96 park avenue ultra with 166k for only $1500, now for the next 2-3 months imma work my ass off and save up for it
