I read the X-Wing books over 10 years ago. I could have sworn the Errant Venture was a Super Star Destroyer that Booster Terrik confiscated after the liberation of Coruscant.
Thats sick. I always love watching your videos. You've helped me really get into scale models and yesterday i just made the millennium falcon from solo with the lighting.
I like how it turned out. I new about Booster Terrick and the Venture for about twenty years now. Through reading all the Star Wars books. Your model turned out real nice.
You know how you could quickly get the ORIGINAL Star Destroyer from Star Wars/1977? See the array (the big "X" part) between the two hemispheres on top of the bridge? Rotate that array 90 degrees vertically and you'll have the original Star Destroyer's bridge array! There were other differences, yes, but that that was THE HUGE noticeable difference between the Star Destroyer in 1977 and the revised, newer model in 1980. I noticed this on Eagle Models channel (he LOVES Star Destroyers and has built every major model release in styrene; he has a "fleet" of 11 of them I think; sold his Zvesda model a while back) and we both had a laugh over this. He just recently did a dedicated Imperial Class 1 model build-up. He took the Revell toy/Rogue One release and just refinished it by rotating the array. He also printed out 3D replacement hemispheres for the bridge and cannons that were more detailed and accurate than what came with the toy. For $20 it's not a bad. It's about as big as the Bandai model kit of the Star Destroyer and not bad on the details; not quite as good but it can be built up into something very decent. LFL really makes big hay on selling us variants of vehicles and lightsabers! Funny how they STILL haven't technically released a model kit of the original Star Destroyer from Star Wars or Rogue One. Even the Rogue One/Revell model gets its wrong and gives you the Imperial II. I was just watching a video snippet of Rogue One and as far as I could tell ALL the Star Destroyers in that film were Imperial Class One (including Vader's flagship in the film; the same star destroyer at the beginning of Star Wars/1977). And yet the official model release is STILL Imperial Class II! I swear the only company that's done decent research on Star Wars model kits is probably Bandai and they're REALLY dragging it down on their Star Wars releases. They haven't released much of anything new in a year now and a lot of the 1/72 releases are getting harder to find now. It's as if they're giving up on the Star Wars license just as the series seems to be turning around a bit with The Mandalorian.
Sales of the more recent stuff based on the Disney releases has not been as good as hoped; same situation the toy manufacturers were in as well as happened with OG Trek/Abrams Trek. They are actually concentrating on a lot of bobbleheads for the coming year which is disappointing, as there are quite a few Original Trilogy ships they could do in 1/72 (the Lambda-class shuttle would be cool) and that stuff was still selling. However, Revell is releasing the Razor Crest in 1/72 next year, so maybe they will take up the slack.
Absolutely beautiful. I am really enjoying these tiny kits and want to buy some as well.. Usually I am more into bigger things, but they seem like fun little projects for inbetween.
I remember a small amount about this ship, something about a sabacc tournament in one of the book series. Don't think I ever knew it was red. This makes me want one on the shelf now!
Your memory isn't wrong. It wasn't red at first (I seem to remember Booster grumbling in I-Jedi about how "Star Destroyer Gray" was the only color economically available in large enough quantities and how it was proof that the Empire had it out for him personally, lol). He only managed to get it painted red as a condition of lending it to the New Republic for a covert operation in the Hand of Thrawn books.

@@modelchili I love Foss's art too - along with other sci-fi art from that era ( ex: Terran Trade Authority books, John Burkey, John Harris, etc. ). Not too long ago, I offered "Hardware: The Definitive SF Works of Chris Foss" to each of my two young nephews ( ages 7 and 8 / different households ). You should have seen their eyes light up! Foss's art is probably among the most approachable for a kid, as an introduction to sci-fi art, partly due to the variety, extensive use of primary colors, somewhat "naïve" spontaneity-filled style, extreme drama and imagination, feeling of scale and detail, ease of projecting oneself into the scenes, etc. - as if his vehicles and ships were in fact gigantic living _toys_ duking it out, right now, somewhere out there. ...I suspect the more fine-artsy / painterly - impressionistic - art, like John Harris', takes a bit more taste and maturity to truly appreciate ( for a kid ); which is why I am holding off before getting them these types of sci-fi art books.
A great project, Sam. Well done. I've been meaning to ask you, do you think Bandai's Star Wars vehicle models, in any scale, even the small Vehicle Model ones, are best base coated with an airbrush given the presence of lots of little surface details, often grouped together such as seen here and the many angles and corners which could become obscured by excess paint? Of course, not to mention that some models such as the 1/6 Stormtroopers, Falcon, AT-AT and larger Star Destroyer and the Revell Venator you did a while back have such large and flat surfaces to cover that brush painting the base coat would be more tedious and time consuming than it's worth. If you're answer is yes, could yo recommend a compressor and airbrush to begin with? Thanks!
Thanks! Yes I'd always recommend an airbrush over brush painting. You just can't get the same result with a brush. The airbrush applies coats of paint that are molecules thick, so if you're careful enough you won't lose any detail. I'd recommend buying a cheap compressor and airbrush combo to start out with, any brand is good.

Thank you! When it comes to choosing paints I just recommend what's nearby and available. If my local hobby shop didn't supply Vallejo then I'd probably use something else. Sorry that's not much help, sometimes it's best if you find a paint that works for you, with your brushes, skill level etc.

RED RED RED!!!! 😂 🤣😂 🤣😂 🤣 And yes, I DO think the Vader helmet looks better with red lenses than the black lenses. The red lenses get across his anger better, IMHO -- they look more menacing. They changed to black lenses in The Empire Strikes Back so that we wouldn't see Dave Prowse's eyes like we did in a scene in the Death Star Trench at the end of Star Wars/1977. (Knowing Lucas' penchant for continuity corrections, they probably wiped out Prowse's eyes in a later re-edit of Star Wars/1977 but I haven't seen that version yet.) The problem with the black lenses is that they made the stunt work that much more difficult and dangerous. The Vader stuntman, Bob Anderson, kept the helmet (or faceplate?) off as much as possible so that he could see. He must have had tremendous muscle memory to do the fencing as well as he did and was probably terrified at points because he was 20 ft+ up on scaffolding/steps at times in Empire. The late, poor Kevin Smith (actor, Hercules and Xena; he played "Ares") died in a scaffolding accident years ago and he was just visiting a set when he lost his balance and fell several stories.
I seem to have in the back of my mind that Booster never finished painting the entire thing red it was always a running joke that it was always half done...but I could be mis remembering that...
IIRC they made a call out in the books about Booster realizing why the Imps just painted them plain grey when he realized how expensive it was trying to paint the Venture red. Anyway slick build as always!
12:25 wasn’t as well maintained.............lol...read the hand of thrawn duology where the true extent is revealed...and it’s also in that book the reason it’s red is explained I wish I had even half the skill you do...I mucked up too much as a kid to even think of trying I stick to lego models instead, such as the 7400 piece SSD...
Nice. Though, if it's the EV then the gun turrets ought to be drilled out, wouldn't they? Been a long time since i read any of those 'books' but I'm nigh certain the weapons systems were removed. If one were to do a back of the envelope calculation, if anyone could be that nerdy, a single coat of marine grade paint for a Star Destroyer would set you back around £10,000,000 or $13,000,000. That's not relevant, of course, just, you know, you have to be amazingly keen on red to invest that much, and that's just buying the stuff, masking up something the size of a small town would be a bit of a pain, and the contractor fees would be enormous.
It got them back during the raid on Yaga Minor during 'Vision of the Future' and then again in the Vong war, but yeah it was stripped down to the legal maximum for the largest of civilian starships: Heavy turbolaser battery (1), Turbolaser battery (1), Point-defense laser cannon batteries (2), Heavy ion cannon batteries, and a Tractor beams emitter

The problem with the black lenses is that they made the stunt work that much more difficult and dangerous.

Thank you! Yes that would be a lot of red paint.
12:25 wasn’t as well maintained.............lol...read the hand of thrawn duology where the true extent is revealed...and it’s also in that book the reason it’s red is explained
I wish I had even half the skill you do...I mucked up too much as a kid to even think of trying
I stick to lego models instead, such as the 7400 piece SSD...
You’ve got red on you.
Ahh! 😱
