  • From her piercing ululation which shattered the silence on stage to her powerful and pitch-perfect homage to Miriam Makeba's ‘Qongqothwane’ - Siki Jo-An proved she meant business getting one of the fastest four-chair turns EVER and a standing ovation. Despite impressive pitches from our panel, it was Riana who won her over ultimately.

If you mean the ululating then I'm afraid you are wrong. I am Zimbabwean living in England and last year, my family and I were in a Turkish restaurant we go to often, but this particular night there was a birthday celebration of this Turkish person and their big family. After the cake came and they sang Happy Birthday, the women started ululating. We were sitting right behind them so my mum and aunty turned around and smiled at them in surprise. They also joined in on the ululating and the Turkish family were amazed and we all broke out into laughter. The Turkish family was so happy about the joint ululating that they cut us some large slices of cake, which was so lovely of them.
I had always thought that ululating was uniquely Zimbabwean and South African. I never even knew that other Africans also ululate, so it was a big surprise to discover that non Africans have the same culture when celebrating. That day I learnt that ululating was intercontinental.

Siki Jo-An nails the spirit of this joyful song. The little beetle whose tapping signals the coming good from God in the form of rains, is a representative of an indomitable spirit. WE NEED more music like this. More than ever, the world needs to see the little signs of God’s goodness to come. It transcends all peoples, places and times, because we need this kind of hope, and to be present in the moment for the little good things today.
I sure hope Siki leans into these types of arrangements of traditional songs. They are so much more beautiful than pop music of today.

I'm 64, white, Danish and not easy to move emotionally.
I watched a show with Miriam Makeba in 1963 where she sang this. I liked it a lot even as a small child and that was the day I learned to hate apartheid.
Even so. Half way into this version of the song I had tears in my eyes and no way to explain why.
When I tried telling my wife, I choked up.

Qongqothwane is a traditional song of the Xhosa people of South Africa. It is sung at weddings to bring good fortune. In the western world it is mainly known as The Click Song, a nickname given to the song by European colonials who could not pronounce its Xhosa title, which has many click consonants in it. The Xhosa title literally means "knock-knock beetle", which is a popular name for various species of darkling beetles that make a distinctive knocking sound by tapping their abdomens on the ground. These beetles are believed by the Xhosa to bring good luck and rain.
The song is known world-wide thanks to the interpretation of South African singer Miriam Makeba (herself a Xhosa). In her discography the song appears in several versions, both with the title Qongqothwane and as The Click Song.
More information on the song can be found in Makeba's book The World of African Song (Chicago: Quadrangle Books, 1971), including the following translation: "The doctor of the road is the beetle / He climbed past this way / They say it is the beetle / Oh! It is the beetle."
She explains the song as a traditional folk song which refers to the knocking beetle which makes clicking sounds and can revolve the top part of its body in any direction. The beetle is used in children's games to point the way home, but also has a deeper symbolism, pointing the way to a better future in times of trouble. In her biography (p.86), she mentions singing it in The Village Vanguard Club in New York, and calls it a "Xhosa song about a dreamy bride".

We were stolen from Africa and taken to the colonized islands, USA, etc, and enslaved.
I was born in Barbados and on my first visit to Africa (to South Africa), getting off the plane and stepping on the ground was an emotional experience that I will never forget.
On my visit to Ghana, from which the people to be enslaved were shipped, that was even more emotional. Our small countries (Jamaica, Barbados, etc) are not part of Africa but we are African by heritage and mighty proud of it. It is more than just Geography for those of us who know better.

Music is an universal language. I don't understand a word she sang but I felt it and got goosebumps all over my body and watery eyes. The Language is gorgeous not to mention the clicks ❤️

She absolutely owned the stage, there was so much charisma and personality in her performance.

My!😳After hearing her sing this song I don’t to another human being sing it. I want this performance to remain imprinted in my memory unchallenged because it was excellently done. Furthermore, I truly don’t believe anyone can do it better and I wouldn’t want to know. This performance was that good. Well done. Well done indeed.👏🔥❤️🤗
