100% Novation Peak - Blade Runner Opening. (Vangelis)

- A fairly satisfying recreation of the Blade Runner opening soundscape + lame video ;). A demonstration of the vintage side of Novation Peak. The patches I made are available for free in this folder. skrie.danoli3.com/music/Novati... (Skrie's Patches.zip)
There's also some 24bit wav files and a TLDR text file with descriptions of the patches and how to work them. The same description I pasted down here for your TLDR pleasure.
Aftertouch:
If your controller has no aftertouch, these patches are probably not going to work.
(channel aftertouch is fine... I don't have polyphonic either. )
Reverb:
Although the recordings rely heavily on reverb, these patches have little or no reverb.
Mostly because I don't like recording reverb.
For Reverb I used NativeInstruments Replica on all channels with various degree of mix and feedback)
(For people who use it, I use the wormhole preset with various degrees of mix and feedback)
If you want to use Peaks own reverb. Set it up as following to get an almost identical result.
Size: 127 , ModDept: 64 , ModRate: 4
Feedback: 110 , Level: 110
Panning:
In my DAW (Reaper) I used a lot of panning to create space and stereo.
It's one of the saddest things lacking in the Peak... but easily fixxed after recording.
Patches:
NovationPeak_BladeRunnerOpening.wav :
Blade1.syx: The softer saw instrument in the opening. The MOD-Matrix is setup to use Aftertouch to controll the
vibrato and frequency. The ModWheel is setup in the MOD-Matrix to create the pitchbending effect.
(I have a nice large smooth ModWheel... and the pitchbendingwheel is just fidgety :P )
Thunder.syx: The low Booming sounds. (Played on a pretty low octave. Added ridiculous ammounts of reverb).
Growling.syx: The Howling Wind Sound. Move up and down the keyboard to let it bend and howl nicely.
Blade2.syx: The Highest Lead Saw. Controlled the same way as Blade1.syx.
Blade LowHorn.syx: The Lowest Lead Saw and Brassy Bassline. Controlled the same way as Blade1/Blade2.syx.
Bells.syx: Those bell sounds, played on very high Octave... Not really nailed these. Need help ;)
String VP330a.syx : A fair reproduction of the Roland VP330 strings Vangelis uses.
Not perfect but satisfying. In my DAW (reaper) I used a stereo widener plugin(JS Stereo Width).
If you don't need big chords... enable unison=2 + UniSpread=127 in the Peak. That sounds even better.
BladeLove.wav :
Bells4.syx : Bells played at a really high Octave. I set it up to use a lot of Sustain Pedal.
String VP330a.syx : Set up same as for NovationPeak_BladeRunnerOpening.wav.
BladeHorn2.syx : Just another random brassy sound that is kinda nice.
Nice work, Skrie! These patches are great.
Thanks. It's a wonderful instrument.
A little sidenote... These patches were made before installing any of the firmware updates. After installing updates... The strings for example now suffer from too much FM synthesis. If you go into the matrix and divide any of the FM settings by 4... it should sound fine again. (if divided by 4 is not an integer... round it down because I only used it very subtly. ) I'll soon review and update the patches and make a new link for the 1.2 update.
@BLADE RUNNER I'm a lazy asshole or I'd have done this weeks ago. Sorry. I'll try to remember to do it. Thanks for the reminder.
@@skrie Did you ever get around to it?
R.I.P Vangelis.
I know. I'm very sad about it. But at least I have his music.
For something that’s been “done to death” this is actually really impressive. Nice job!
Wow! That's probably the best Blade Runner synth sound recreation I heard on youtube so far. Spot on!
ua-cam.com/video/RKOd8GVAjnQ/v-deo.html listen to this At !2:19 all software
Very nice - your version gave me the same chills I get hearing the original even all these years later.
This is mind blowing. Seriously. Great job.
I love my Peak.
I keep coming back to this. This is fire.
Omg that sounds amazing!
Good sounds. The intro text was great too...
brilliant -excellent work :)
love it! I want more!!!
I only got it 4 weeks ago. So, there'll definitelly be more. :D As much spare time as I can squeeze into it to be exact.
Great and thank you. Just what I was looking for 👍
Hey thanks. The patches should still work. Except for the Strings. They were bodged by a firmware update and need adjustment of the FM setting in the mod matrix. If you reduce the FM setting it should start sounding like strings again.
wonderful !
bravo , bravo 👏
Nice opening! :)
Nice :D
Great job...you really captured the sound of the original. The Novation Peak sounds fantastic. I had a Nova ll for several years and loved it...with the Peak, it sounds like Novation have finally superseded their Supernova.
Thanks. I love the synth. I wonder how popular it is at the moment. There was a huge price-drop that encouraged me to get it. But maybe that's because it's not all that popular.
@skrie huge price drop = big incentive to get a new synth! regardless if its popular, you'll no doubt get some good mileage out of it if you keep it. the filter sounds great, it's not a cs80 granted, but neither is anything out there...btw i saw this video today, i'm sure you'd appreciate it too - Eric Persing + Cs80 : ua-cam.com/video/t98BP-S7Ock/v-deo.html
@@silverlight2004db Right now I'd settle for just playing an actual CS80 , if only once. I've never seen one in person. And thanks. I love that vid already.
@@skrie that figures you had already seen it...me neither...it's a very desirable thing for me also, all thanks to one legendary composer and artist
@@silverlight2004db I hadn't seen it. I meant I loved it instantly after watching it. That's some true art and I'm going to listen the shit out of this.
Wow! Awesome!
nice one!!
Short, but overwhelming!
The same bloody hell
Lovely stuff. You just made Novation a sale. :)
Good choice. It's a really good instrument. Good for years of fun.
@@skrie Hey, it really did as well - it's right here next to me and I love it. :)
Yooooooooo!
This is fantastic. Did you ever update the patches? Top notch work.
Fantastic work. Have you tried the prophet rev2? I'm torn between buying a peak or a prophet. Leaning towards the prophet though due to 16 voice.
I briefly considered the Rev2 8-desktop module. But I didn't like the display and the mod-matrix. It also was €400,- more expensive as the Peak which has almost identical capabilities and sounded better to my ears. If 16 voices is what you need the Rev2-16 is obviously better, but almost 2x as expensive. I wish the Peak had more voices. The voice doubling / spreading is amazing, but it's hard to utilize with only 8 voices. I think the Peak with it's double-source modmatrix is still superior in many ways though. The Summit would be an amazing choice, but I've yet to see one in a shop to try out. If you want the 16 voices, and you have the chance to compare the Summit to the Rev2, I bet the Summit would be a better Synth. (Although I'm slightly pissed the Summit keyboard has no Polyphonic Aftertouch. )
skrie thanks so much for your thoughts.
Sounds really nice! Have you done anything since 1.2?
What do you mean?
Thank you very much !
Would you say that the Peak sounds as warm as analogue synths ? I'd like to buy one :)
I have never owned a vintage synth. I can only compare to old recordings and say it can sound like that and more.
I've worked with a mountain of analog gear over the last year and I'd say the Peak gets 97% of the way there. The difference is in the raw oscillators. They're clean and steady compared to a vintage analog. But the Peak has enough modulation and distortion options to make up for it. It also has it's own analog character thanks to the filter. In a mix it's a total wash (as heard in the above video). The Peak is easily my favorite synth. It can do ANYTHING.
@@impurfekt 97%, lol
@@impurfekt The Novation Summit perfectly replaces my Matrix12. 100%
Hi great music. Do you also do project work? (i.e producing these type of tunes for games?)
I don't. But I'd love to. I have no idea how to get a job like that :D
@@skrie Do you have Telegram? I can connect you to the company making the game)
@@koipoi8111 I don't have telegram (or have used it). What kind of game are we talking about?

Digital is new analog :-)
It has 24mhz digital oscillators that diverge and drift and real analogue filter and distortion.
Lol, "fortunatelly".
Damnit.... English is hard lol.
