MTB, BMX, & Trials Bikes - Which to choose?

- Mountain bikes are made for riding over rough terrain. They’re made to go fast and cover lots of ground.
Trials bikes are made for negotiating technical obstacles. They’re geared low and made for maneuverability.
BMX bikes are made for doing tricks and riding skatepark. They’re built to be and indestructible.
Let’s start with the mountain bike. I’d say this is the most popular of the three when you go across all age groups. If you can only have one bike, I’d choose this. Why? Well first of all it’s comfortable and makes great transportation. This means you’ll definitely get use out of it, especially if you’re not old enough to drive. Mountain bikes are of course great for riding trails, and you can even use them to do jumps. While they’re not the best for tricks, you can ride a little street and get creative on a mountain bike.
Mountain bikes have powerful brakes, capable drivetrains, plus big tires to take the shock and vibration out of rough terrain. For when things get really rough, mountain bikes also have suspension. So it seems, the mountain bike is a fast, comfortable, and capable vehicle which can do a lot of things. This makes it the winner of the three in terms of practicality and versatility, but that doesn’t mean you should choose it over a trials or BMX bike. Let’s take a look at the trials bike next.
While this is considered a street trials bike, it’s still useful for our comparison. The tires are fat, the bars are wide, and it has powerful disc brakes just like the mountain bike. It seems like you could ride trails on this, except for a few problems. First of all you can’t really sit on it, and second of all there’s only one ridiculously low gear. In fact the gearing on a trials bike is so low that you’re better off using a skateboard for transportation. So, to get around town or ride trails, the trials bike is off the table.
So what about doing jumps and riding skateparks? After all, it looks a little like a dirt jump bike, and seems maneuverable enough to replace a BMX. Again, the devil is in the details. The fork on a trials bike puts the wheel dead center, as opposed to dirt jump and BMX forks, which are offset towards the front. This makes them sketchy for landings. Also, the head tube angle is more upright, making it poor for maintaining control at speed. The trials geometry is optimized for tight maneuvers, not for speed. Trials is a cycling discipline that puts your bike handling skills to the ultimate test. For this reason, only get a trials bike if you’re really sure you want to do trials, because it won’t be useful for anything else. Don’t take this as a jab at trials, it’s just that trials really isn’t for everyone. If you want to learn more about trials, check out my playlist which I’ve linked to in the description.
Lastly we have the BMX. Like the trials bike, a BMX bike isn’t any good for sitting on and pedaling through mountain bike trails. With that said, it’s actually not the worst transportation. When I was a kid on Long Island, I rode my BMX all over town. As an adult, I still grab it to run to the coffee shop. The high tire pressure, moderate gearing, and huge riser bars make BMX bikes pretty fun to get around on.
As a sport, BMX is very popular, so it’s easy to find people to ride with no matter where you live. The dead simple construction makes BMX bikes the most reliable thing on two wheels, so for kids with a low budget and no tools, it might be the perfect option. With the same bike, you can ride street, skatepark, and dirt jumps. Even if you just have a driveway to ride in, there’s no shortage of fun things you can do on a BMX.
So, what about cross training and doing some trials on a BMX? Nope. The lack of powerful brakes, and a super short wheelbase make BMX bikes pretty bad for trials. The gearing is also way too high to perform any trials technique. So, if you can’t decide between BMX and trials you’ll probably be stuck with two bikes. The more you watch BMX and trials videos, the more you’ll notice how radically different the sports are from each other.
So if this video hasn’t given you a clear path towards what’s right for you, then look at your surroundings. What do your friends ride? What’s popular where you live? What is there to ride in your immediate vicinity? If you don’t have anyone to ride with, don’t have anything to ride on, or can’t get to the place you plan on riding, then the bike will likely sit in your garage.

That moment i relize i might have an obsession with bikes because i have put all my money towards them and just if i dont ride i get depressed
I'm weird, but I prefer working on bikes more than riding them. I like the buzz of riding something different, but eventually it feels normal and I have to go for something different to get the buzz back again.
Alex Paulsen you’re like a mechanic / engineer type
same here :D

Dude, let me tell u, the day I got my 1st MTB is the day I abolished Cars from my mind, I couldn't get off my Bike, It became like my best friend. Even if I'm shopping for groceries I have an excuse to take my MTB for a ride.
Lmao I love how you quietly slipped a comment thats sure to start arguments at the end
I'd rather have a console than a bike
siquator how was it meant to start arguments? He pretty much just said what would you rather, be outside or inside? It's a rhetorical question unless your a nerd
Mick Dundee
I never said meant, try actually reading the comment :)
siquator try actually infer into what he was saying instead of being literal and assuming he was trying to start an argument but in relation to the video it was rhetorical because nobody actually wants to play a games console instead of riding a bike (unless they have no life)
Being outside is great though
You’re gonna want a game console while your hip heals

Yeah, I was just about to comment that.
It's famous now lol

cannonball666 You must be fun at parties.
when martyn ashton was a kid he used a bmx as a trials bike because it was all he had and he was one of the best riders
That's cause he was doing it the hard way
Your vids are great! Just recently interested in biking, and so happy to find your channel and then to realize how current it all is. It's like your posting the answers to questions I'm thinking.

better than spending your money on a game console? your goddamn right!
So true I rather have a Gaming PC over a console and a Mtb over a PC.
A game console is kinda needed where i live so :P
Fredrik, get outside and live.
+Ronald Tartaglia I do though. You see where i live during winter time temp goes as low as -25°c not so fun riding your bike during winter. I used to ride my bike around 11000km a year.
Oh no! I wish for you some sunshine and warm weather..

This is the video I've been looking for, for a long time
I still don't know which to pick you make them all look fun lol. And your crash at the end made me hold my breath for a split second. Great vids...be safe!
I recently bought a dirt jumper and am surprised at how similar they are to trails bikes, they are also fun to ride street. you should get one!
One day can you do a dirt jumper, BMX, MTB, trials
Thanks for making this video man! Very helpful
Excellent video as usual. Congrats. I use a mountain bike in my hometown because the streets have a lots of holes and some are dirt roads. I love my bike because it gives me the liberty to go wherever I want.
I spent some money on a nice BMX because I love it and want to learn it and get good at it but found myself having more fun cruising around town on my 26er hardtail practicing bunny hops, manuals and wheelies instead. I like that I can easily just throw the bmx in my trunk and go somewhere but I do feel like it is limited in it's travel abilities on it's own. Can't really cruise around on it without feeling beat after a while (im getting old?). I also feel silly trying to practice BMX as an adult since i'm no good. So I spend my days trying to decide if I want to devote time to BMX or the MTB and can't make my mind up. I guess my dream bike is a 26 inch BMX bike with disc brakes that can still handle some mild trails. My 09 Diamondback Response with Hookworm tires will have to suffice for now.
Mountain biking is best for me because of the suspension and all terrain tires
what about dirt jump bikes
This video helped me so much thank you
Once again, another great video.

you are right, spend money on a pc instead
Haha goddamn right!😂
Monacle Min i am having a tight budget for a 1060 playing games over 60fps its better then a new bike because bike need much more money

i like gaming and mountainbiking.
i dont have that much time for mtb, because i must work until 4-5pm and usually ended up tired.
i play games every night, because it makes me happy :)
and for MTB i only get to do it on Friday/ Sunday.
i like it because its fun, and painful.. and the feeling when you nailed a trick is just wow.
so, i dont mind spending money for these two things that i like. :) Cheers!
I love my trials bike. I’ve hardly touched my MTB (which I also love) since getting the trials bike. I’m not very good at it but I’ve had a lot of fun at skate parks with the trials bike too.
You need to get a dirt jumper
thats one thing he doesn't seem to show. he saids he has like 10 other bikes that are in the storage unit but we havent seen them
if id choose any bike id choose a dirt jumper mtb its the best of all world's
Tru dat!
"What is there to ride in your immediate vicinity?" Canal Tow paths, windy roads and town streets, gentle trails and connetcing paths, moors.
Yeah, I went with a 26" BMX... coveres everything but the moors but I have done the moors on a fully rigid bike before (it was hilarious fun)
Hey Seth love the channel
From li myself and grew up on Bmx and stunt bikes, as a kid use to take them everywhere even trails and blowout tires, young and dumb but so much fun :)
Now I’m in Fort Lauderdale beach (I saw your jetti footage) was just there and go often, and trying to learn about my entry to mountain biking and trail fun after not being on a bike for 15 years

MTB - can ride: roads, trails, skate parks, urban
Road Bike - can ride: roads
BMX - can ride: roads (inefficiently), skateparks, urban
Mountain bikes make SO much sense.
i ride trails and it can ride the exact same terrain
+Odin Palen Yeah but not efficiently or well.
+bhMTB yea anything can ride anything but they all are ment for something so really none of the bikes is better than the others
Odin Palen I beg to disagree. I would never take a road bike on mtb trails, whereas I always take a mountain bike on the roads
+kotaro169 With a low seat and a fixed gear, how would a BMX fair on a long road ride with hills?
hello im 12 i have a walmart "BMX" bike and an old mountain bike thats too small. i like my "BMX" but i really want a new bike. i like going for bike rides around the block and stuff but somtimes i go on a trail. please help me choose anyone.
LFORLESLIEx try a dirt jumper the geometry is kind of similar to bmx and it has suspension for trails
I ride my onza T-PRO every were im on it all day and i love it even though im mostly being overtaken but when it comes to downhill sections with no pedalling i have overtaken people. But I mostly ride mtb because its just awesome! Btw nice video
Seth great video. I was deciding between bmx and trials but I think I am going whit the bmx. Thanks bud :)
I tend to go way faster on my bmx then my mtb

Hey Seth,
You should tryout a dirt track on a dedicated dirt jumper, or even better, take it to the streets!
Thanks for all the quality vids.
bmx= low budget
yeah surely(...)
in comparison it is the cheapest
Comparitively... But like anything, you can spend big bucks in any category, but the most expensive in each category, will still have BMX cheaper than the top MTB....
i have mountain bike
Excellent Video!!
I personally like bmx cruisers there very light and comfy btw good video
Awesome video. Keep up the good work.
I own a dirtjumper and it's just my allrounder. It's fast, light and is way stronger than a cheap entry level hardtail I used to own.
watching every vid and liking
The part about getting a bike rather than a console is true as you can go most places and have fun all the time plus you will feel better riding around rather than sitting inside
love your honest attitude to just getting out on the bike for that all so often forgotten factor ..FUN. reminds me why we all got into bikes in the first place. and i also just like bikes not just any one type. the trails in the video look good and your weather is something to be jealous of. keep up the videos
i bought my mountainbike over a ps4 it is realy the best bike i have ever driven , but a couple weeks ago i still bought a ps4:)
love your vids
Wow, that was a cool and interesting clip. Like you, I have been riding for a while. Still to this day I sometimes have trouble picking which bike I want to ride. For each day. Your video is a very cool comparison of three bikes that look the same to a regular person or someone that is just getting into our sport.
Have you thought about doing a idea that could go well with this one about where to ride in FLORIDA. To go through Trails, Trials, Park/Street, BMX Race Tracks. It seems you live in a great place for a making of a great series. Well just a thought.
i Have a Xbox and a corratec xrtail Cross mtb i worked berry hard for it im the only one of my friends Who Does mountainbikinh or sports for that Matter and i Love it you Always find me in the Woods looking for New trails to ride and try to go faster every timw
The ending though
“Ok THATS ENOUGH”
Thanks Bro
I got a fat tire mountain bike, I love it for riding offroad and trails near me, or just for straight distance riding to far away places. But I kinda want to get a BMX bike to. My background is skateboarding so tricks seems like a fun thing for me to learn.
Thx! My birthday is coming soon and I wanted a bike but I didn’t know which one.
For newcomers to biking in general, this is the formula for the number of bikes you need to own. D=N+1 when D equals the number of bikes you should own after the best purchase for you and N equals the number of bikes you currently own.
Wise words Seth.
i ride a dj bike. its a great cruiser. can handle rough ground and bmx style geometry. ie high bars and a low seat. for me and where i ride, its the perfect bike!
the best all around bike i think is a solid larger 26" dirt jumper. almost like ur trek. its great in street, possible for moderate trails if the forks big enough and the tires r agressive enough, and u can sort of do skate parks since its so agressive and solid. my bike, a 29" specialized rockhopper, is fun in the street but the wheels r huuuuge and the wheel base is too long and its great on the trails so a smaller, more reliable bike is a great all around bike.
My father has a bike collection he has all of the different kinds of bikes he even made a super suspension bike with shock absorbing tubeless wheels with a down hill fork a dropper and a carbon suspension body.
I ride Street Trials with bmx riders and even join them in game of bike. You can also ride park with a Street Trials bike. It is possible to ride dirt jumps with a Street Trials bike, but you have to know your bike really well (landings may be awkward). ( and because of no shocks the dirt jumps have to be smooth).
street trials is awesome for bmx like tricks
Your surroundings/environment are everything. If you live near downhill with a chair lift, take advantage of that downhill
Thanks for the help I am gonna get a mtb
really helpful !
You show upload a video how to clean bikes like every type of bike. Your bmx so clean and I'm trying to keep my clean after a ride lol
