You know, or people just don't want to hold up the entire queue because of petting the cat. And also, cats are prone to carry a lot of diseases and infections so it's understandable that not many wants to pet a possibly stray cat.

well there could be several reasons... 1. people don't know if the cat will attack it or not, and if you're one of those nerds who say "bUt tHe cAt LoOkS ReLaXeD", well, it's called having a phobia, or if not a phobia, it's being bad at understanding animal body language. Most of y'all can't even understand human body language that well, what more if it's someone who doesn't bother to know anything about the body language of another species? And YES, I know there are tons of people who suck at understanding animal body language, I've seen them, even some pet owners suck at understanding if their animal is stressed or not. 2. Like I mentioned in my first point, they could have a fear of cats or animals/pets in general. And before some of y'all say "bUt hOw cAn PeOpLe bE sCarEd oF cAts", there could be multiple reasons so don't minimize someone's traumatic event. I could say the same things as someone who's fascinated with bugs and snakes but I don't, if someone like me can understand that fear is subjective, I'm assuming you would know too. 3. ALLERGIES. As someone with both asthma and allergies to cat dander specifically (not the fur, it's dander/skin), I can't even pass a place near a cat. Some allergies are less severe than others so don't knock on someone who can't touch a cat because of health reasons, they just wanted to go to a train, not expect a cat. 4. some other comments have mentioned it, but some people are uncomfy with touching a cat that could have minor skin diseases or fleas, that doesn't mean they dislike or think the cat is gross, they just don't want to contaminate themselves on accident, especially if they have their own pets at home. 5. People are rushing, I usually get scolded for arriving home late even though it's always very crowded and/or traffic where I live, maybe if someone wasn't rushing, then maybe they can go pet the cat, but we don't know the life situation of most of these people so don't try to see them as heartless for having time management???? 6. They understand that other people in the line cOULD be busy/need to get home immediately if they, themselves, are not busy so they don't wanna clog the line by petting the cat, that doesn't mean they don't acknowledge it, some of y'all need to stop thinking in such a dichotomous manner. 7. Some people just have an apathy towards animals. As someone who's like that myself, I would know how it feels. That doesn't mean I don't like animals (remember apathy ≠ hatred, for y'all dichotomous thinking mfs here, I've already stated I have a fascination for bugs and snakes in a scientific sense, but there's nothing more to it), I just see them as something to observe and nothing more, and the same goes for humans, I feel the same way towards them. People have different priorities and don't be surprised if someone doesn't respect your interests if you can't respect theirs back (ie. being apathetic about a random cat). And I say this as someone who grew up with multiple pets throughout my life. 8. People were too focused on other stuff so petting the cat didn't enter their mind. 9. (Probably the most "wholesome" of answers, I guess) They already pet too many cats and ran out of time to pet one more cat, even though this one was literally on the train station waiting for pets. 10. Bonus additional reason: For those who DO understand a bit of cat behavior, you'd know that not all cats like excessuve friction on their fur, thus causing them to only enjoy a limited amount of pets each time (that's why some cats lightly bite you after you pet it for awhile). Maybe people were just giving that sort of consideration towards the cat? After all, not everyone knows how much petting the cat can take as different cats have different boundaries. If this answer is too long, then I don't really care, y'all were looking for answers, and if you had the capacity to understand other people's situations, then people like me wouldn't feel the need to explain everything in detail just to get it in y'alls heads. Y'all asked for reasons why people would not get a cat and I gave it, nothing more, nothing less.
Being humiliated by being the one person not able to scan it, is one of the most anxiety inducing things to me. I still do it, but I always panic a little
I get why you get anxiety, but stop giving a fuck what people think, they don’t provide you with mental health, money, support. they also don’t think about you in any way shape or form, ask yourself how the first person who’s card took a time to scan and try to remember what they looked like, even after a 2 minute video I can’t remember, so imagine a whole train station later

Look at its body language, the cat is calm but cautious. Its only tolerating being briefly touched. As a stranger you should only pet a cat like this if the cat invites you to do so, otherwise you're getting swatted or scratched.

@@elchikoriko592 we have a similar system on all public transport (a small scanner) and usually people have the card in their wallets or their phone case. If the apparatus is working well, it should easily scan through 2mm of leather

Having just been in Japan, it looks so weird that both the scanners and the people are so slow in this video. In Tokyo, five people would have gone through the gate in the time it took for one person here.
Although I was initially frustrated that hardly anyone petted the cat, I realised that they're also being thoughtful about not holding up people in the line by not standing to pet the cat. Also, this way they just letting the cat chill n do it's thing. Maybe that's why it's so comfortably sitting Cz it knows it's safe.
Also randomly petting animals without checking first if that what they actualy want by letting them snif you hand first etc, is actualy not animal loving behavior. People dont like it either if they are randomly touched by strangers or people invade their privacy uninvited. It's kind of human arrogance to just asume it's oke to pet any cat or dog you see. Thats how accidents happen. And a line is not a place to take your time to get to know the cat to see if it wants pets from you. I studied animal healtcare, please never NEVER randomly pet animals. Always take the time to study them first, to read their body language, or wait till they come to you for pets instead. Even if your a pet owner you should not pet your dog or cat whenever YOU feel like it. Respect their personal space as well.

The design is stupid too. Why would they make it bowl shaped when it seems like its supposed to be a contactless, tappable card reader system?? That just encourages people to let go of the card and defeats the whole purpose of it.
Everyone in comments is complaining about the cat not receiving enough pets. But on bright side, cats are usually wary about larger beings. The cat is showing no fear and is sitting comfortably irrespective of any human passing by. That says a lot about that place where it lives that it's never been treated harshly by anyone so it's absolutely comfortable with strangers approaching that close to it.
To be fair, at least none of them yelled at the cat. One thing I hate is people who are unnecessarily afraid of small calm animals to the point where they have to yell at it to go away. I have cousin's like that and it's extremely irritating

It's incredibly fascinating how each person passing through has a unique way to use the card. For some reason it feels like it communicates something deeper about human individuality. However, the cat, from his throne of steel, sees all and welcomes all. Whether they hold the card or place it down, all are accepted equally. Whether it gets pets or not doesn't matter. 3. ALLERGIES. As someone with both asthma and allergies to cat dander specifically (not the fur, it's dander/skin), I can't even pass a place near a cat. Some allergies are less severe than others so don't knock on someone who can't touch a cat because of health reasons, they just wanted to go to a train, not expect a cat.
4. some other comments have mentioned it, but some people are uncomfy with touching a cat that could have minor skin diseases or fleas, that doesn't mean they dislike or think the cat is gross, they just don't want to contaminate themselves on accident, especially if they have their own pets at home.
5. People are rushing, I usually get scolded for arriving home late even though it's always very crowded and/or traffic where I live, maybe if someone wasn't rushing, then maybe they can go pet the cat, but we don't know the life situation of most of these people so don't try to see them as heartless for having time management????
6. They understand that other people in the line cOULD be busy/need to get home immediately if they, themselves, are not busy so they don't wanna clog the line by petting the cat, that doesn't mean they don't acknowledge it, some of y'all need to stop thinking in such a dichotomous manner.
7. Some people just have an apathy towards animals. As someone who's like that myself, I would know how it feels. That doesn't mean I don't like animals (remember apathy ≠ hatred, for y'all dichotomous thinking mfs here, I've already stated I have a fascination for bugs and snakes in a scientific sense, but there's nothing more to it), I just see them as something to observe and nothing more, and the same goes for humans, I feel the same way towards them. People have different priorities and don't be surprised if someone doesn't respect your interests if you can't respect theirs back (ie. being apathetic about a random cat). And I say this as someone who grew up with multiple pets throughout my life.
8. People were too focused on other stuff so petting the cat didn't enter their mind.
9. (Probably the most "wholesome" of answers, I guess) They already pet too many cats and ran out of time to pet one more cat, even though this one was literally on the train station waiting for pets.

Bonus additional reason: For those who DO understand a bit of cat behavior, you'd know that not all cats like excessuve friction on their fur, thus causing them to only enjoy a limited amount of pets each time (that's why some cats lightly bite you after you pet it for awhile). Maybe people were just giving that sort of consideration towards the cat? After all, not everyone knows how much petting the cat can take as different cats have different boundaries.
If this answer is too long, then I don't really care, y'all were looking for answers, and if you had the capacity to understand other people's situations, then people like me wouldn't feel the need to explain everything in detail just to get it in y'alls heads. Y'all asked for reasons why people would not get a cat and I gave it, nothing more, nothing less.

@@elchikoriko592 we have a similar system on all public transport (a small scanner) and usually people have the card in their wallets or their phone case. If the apparatus is working well, it should easily scan through 2mm of leather

Having just been in Japan, it looks so weird that both the scanners and the people are so slow in this video. In Tokyo, five people would have gone through the gate in the time it took for one person here.
Although I was initially frustrated that hardly anyone petted the cat, I realised that they're also being thoughtful about not holding up people in the line by not standing to pet the cat. Also, this way they just letting the cat chill n do it's thing. Maybe that's why it's so comfortably sitting Cz it knows it's safe.

Also randomly petting animals without checking first if that what they actualy want by letting them snif you hand first etc, is actualy not animal loving behavior. People dont like it either if they are randomly touched by strangers or people invade their privacy uninvited. It's kind of human arrogance to just asume it's oke to pet any cat or dog you see. Thats how accidents happen. And a line is not a place to take your time to get to know the cat to see if it wants pets from you. I studied animal healtcare, please never NEVER randomly pet animals. Always take the time to study them first, to read their body language, or wait till they come to you for pets instead. Even if your a pet owner you should not pet your dog or cat whenever YOU feel like it. Respect their personal space as well.

The design is stupid too. Why would they make it bowl shaped when it seems like its supposed to be a contactless, tappable card reader system?? That just encourages people to let go of the card and defeats the whole purpose of it.
Everyone in comments is complaining about the cat not receiving enough pets. But on bright side, cats are usually wary about larger beings. The cat is showing no fear and is sitting comfortably irrespective of any human passing by. That says a lot about that place where it lives that it's never been treated harshly by anyone so it's absolutely comfortable with strangers approaching that close to it.
