The music, the close ups and the camera angles and the flip through and your very choice of the system that u want to review, Everything about this video is just so awesome. I hope u review other rpg systems too :)
Palladium games were all we played. I'm glad as well. After I found out how D&D plays I still prefer Palladium Fantasy 1st edition. It makes a lot more sense using opposed 1D20 rolls. Sword Strike vs Parry. Shoot an arrow vs dodge.
Good overview. I know you released this three years ago, but there are many supplements out now, detailing the Palladium world. HUGE amounts of detail!
@@reapersritehand I have a bunch of that stuff too, and the flavor is great. Love the bit in the main manual where they describe how many zombies would be within say 1000m in any big town or city. Never run or played it, but love the setting.
My uncle gave me a copy of the first edition of this when I was a teen and loved GMing it with a campaign of intrigue againt the encroaching wolfen empire.
This was fantastically done. I can’t wait for the Rifts review. I’m glad Palladium seems to be getting more mention now as TTRPGs have become more popular over the last few years.
It was nice to watch this vid that I stumbled upon today I have very fond memories of Palladium FRP game, but mostly have played the 1e version. It still influences the way I think about FRP games and I will occasionally use something that I borrow from Palladium in more recent systems. There is a lot of creative content in all the Palladium books.
I am keeping my eye out for any 1st edition stuff. I've never played it, but I have a ton of all the 2nd edition "megaversal" books. I may do a deep dive into the lore someday as well, as it is interesting if not very well explained in this book.
I run this now myself.. Been playing for 23 years, took a several year break, and JUST started a new game for the first time in years.. Been nice getting back to it!
As far as them not planning major releases, it's worth noting that Kevin brought on Sean Owen Robertson, who did the Savage World's crossover line with Rifts, as his protege and creative partner. I heard on a podcast the ultimate goal is to eventually hand him the keys to the kingdom. But as for short term, they want to finish up currently planned and in production books and then focus on a system-wide long overdue update. I guess we could vaguely refer to it as Palladium 3e, since we've mostly just been getting errata for 1 and 2e printings of major product lines for quite some time.
Hey this video was so good. Wonderfully shot, great music and just enough information to peak the interest of the viewer. Would love to see other videos on Palladium products!
My RPG groups played this from the late 80s up until about 2016. Thus game got so much right. You won't find a better system for wizards out there. But it was a brutal game. You character was almost never at full health. Good memories. If only they had their own version of DnDBeyond
There are a lot of supplements that expand on the world and lore, there also build out on different martial O.C.C.s as well. As for the drawing showing some of the characters with sci fi weapons, that was the author's home campaign player characters. He used to run for a very large group of people.
I've been playing consistently for over thirty years. I can't play without home brewing, and to top it off my group has a couple of modules worth house rules running loose in our heads.
Love Palladium Fantasy. I played it for years and though I have played dozens if RPGs and mostly play ither systems these days PF will always be dear to me.
Palladium was my introduction to TTRPG's way back in the late 80's, one of my mothers friends had the original black and red cover book which they got for tattoo inspiration only. I laid claim to the book and that started my enjoyment of Palladium I ran a couple of long term campaigns with it unfortunately I'm finding it difficult to find people to play it as they prefer the "What superpower do I have" games that D&D has become
Especially since it defines what having that alignment/personality type would entail in everyday behavior. Would you accept stolen goods? Stand idly by as people around you did drugs? Torture a bad guy for information?
I used to play/run this since the 1st edition back in 85. I own both 1st and 2nd editions. I recently bought the last 11 books in the entire series and am embarking on running a total old skool campaign using the entire collection. Starting with the adventures in Book 2: Old Ones 😁😁😁
If someone stumbles onto this in the next 18 days, there's actually 2 parallel Bundles of Holding running that have a lot of Palladium 1e and 2e books respectively!
We used to combine in college, palladium and TMNT...had bull/cow based characters in San Francisco (since the turtles where in NYC)...yes we where those udder guys.
Each area of the PFRPG world had it's own source book with a lot of details for the history, culture, and native peoples. Some areas were done better than others, in terms of playable details, but all of them added color to the gaming experience. There was/is a large errata file to handle the multiple errors, missing information, and contradictions in the books. There is also a summary list of the questions players submitted that were answered by the authors.
Palladium Books was the first system I played, and one I GMed for several years. Mostly Heroes Unlimited, but with lots of crossovers with Fantasy and TMNT as well. Awesome worlds, great art (particularly in RIFTS), and overall a fun system. This is the system I've compared every other game against since then. Combat is oft a SLOG though, with even simple fights taking HOURS with all the parrying, dodging and attack rolls, but it's very realistic. The attribute rolling can, and does, create some extremely powerful and extremely useless characters ... but again, it adds a layer of realism not found in many systems.
6:17 I don't understand what you're getting at. There are more non-magical classes than actual magical classes, and with the selection of Skills any class can be varied.
It had a comparatively realistic system with combat that was actually fun. The damage is a bit of a cludge, and I thought it should have included crits.
I've played with a fair number of RPG groups, but only one played Palladium with any frequency. Character creation was a nuisance, and the system could get a bit clunky, but all told I liked the system. (And where else could you start out with a character with Hysterical Blindness, and manage to get them up to 4th level before they finally expired on top of a burning building?)
Why do you feel 2E is superior to 1E? Is it solely for its more seamless meshing with the other Palladium books? Most of the reviews from actual Palladium Fantasy players have 1E as the better and more playable version.
I didn't necessarily mean it was "superior" per say. What I meant to say is that they greatly added onto the structure and rules system. In my script I wrote "a major improvement" but I suppose what I meant was "a major renovation".
Palladium is an awesome game system that outshines 5th Edition D&D. However, their vagueness and usually horrible supplements took a toll on the game. The exception is The Island at the Edge of the World and the Northern Wilderness ones. There Monsters and Animals is good. Though you don't need it for the second Edition if you buy the Rifts Conversion book. Most of PB's supplements suck because you almost never get real maps. Just a bunch of rectangles, lines, squares, triangles, squiggles for plant life or river or lakes. TSR outshines PB's in supplement content and artwork. Some of Palladium books products are just pure laziness in art or explanations. Like the Dragon on the cover is from artwork from time life books the Enchanted World series. They just covered it in horns to hide that fact. You can see it in the Enchanted World book series commercials on UA-cam. They have Vincent Price in them. Palladium Books became a victim of their own success with RIFTS. I hated RIFTS personally.
Honestly, this system reminds me of Dwarf Fortress adventure mode. The excruciating, perhaps excessive detail, and consequently constrained nature of it gives the impression of a compuiter program, where what isn't explicitly implemented isn't possible.
I love that by "not condoning the occult" Palladium were lumping those idiotic christians into the same baskets with the so-called satanists they despised. I'm sure that was lost on the self-righteous though.
The music, the close ups and the camera angles and the flip through and your very choice of the system that u want to review, Everything about this video is just so awesome. I hope u review other rpg systems too :)
Wow, the photography and music make it worth watching this review alone - and that too is good! Well done, Stray Cat Matt! =)
"Remember an old company " they still dropping new books to this day
This was my first ttrpg…brings back a lot of memories
Palladium games were all we played. I'm glad as well. After I found out how D&D plays I still prefer Palladium Fantasy 1st edition. It makes a lot more sense using opposed 1D20 rolls. Sword Strike vs Parry. Shoot an arrow vs dodge.

I have most of their old school books, but have actually been playing one of their newest games "dead reign " alot lately

Always nice to see Palladium fantasy content!

Diabolist - best character class I ever played.
The music from Ogre battle 64! I love it.
Just came across this today, never heard of this game but sounds cool. I love the old school black and white pen sketches.

Ironically the Palladium Fantasy line still gets new updates and sourcebooks-- it's actually a big line at this point.
Yep. And Kevin recently said lots of new books coming for fantasy.

I never played dnd but i did play palladuim a good bit as a teen. I had every book.
Still have my old 1E copy from 1983! Many fond memories.

There is so much lore out there. Tons of world books
I thoroughly enjoyed how you presented this video - the cinematography, bgm, your relaxed review & reflections... Great job.
Just found this channel.. Excellent video on a game too forgotten. New sub!
I've been playing consistently for over thirty years. I can't play without home brewing, and to top it off my group has a couple of modules worth house rules running loose in our heads.
Excellent job. Everything about this was top-notch. The music, how it was filmed, and the narration was masterfully done.
This review it's simply Beautiful, great work 👌
Great flavour and setting. Gritty and dark if desired.
Love Palladium Fantasy. I played it for years and though I have played dozens if RPGs and mostly play ither systems these days PF will always be dear to me.
Music was great too, very nostalgic. +1
i loved the Palladium system. its still one of my favorites. sadly finding players is near impossible these days.

I really liked their alignment system.
Especially since it defines what having that alignment/personality type would entail in everyday behavior. Would you accept stolen goods? Stand idly by as people around you did drugs? Torture a bad guy for information?

Awesome I GM this game back in the 1990s. Played the old ones campaign with all evil characters tons of all nighters what a blast.

Wild West C.O.W.BOYS of Moo Mesa!
Top notch, thank you!
This was an awesome universe.

You made me buy a copy on eBay. Thank you for letting me backslide on my hoarding addiction. :)
Ogre battle music got me nostalgic
@Azathoth Hastur yeah
Amazing video quality, great editing. Would be great if there was a bit on the MUXs out there.
When i bought Palladium Fantasy in 83, i preferred it over D&D, since it had skills ans a better alignment system!
Palladium: we sue everybody! (which is why I quit them)

Don't forget Ninjas and Superspies!
Gothry grizzlebock was my wolfen character. First character i made.
Aware of the game but never played it. But my god some of that b/w artwork is really sweet!
Like Shadowrun and Earthdawn you could jump era's with your characters. In fact the Original Rifts Vampire Heavily Suggested this.
Playing gnome mystic on a homebrew planet at the present time. 🧙♂️☺️😁😄
I played a lot in my teens.
@27 seconds in, 'BLASPHEMY!!!"
6:17 I don't understand what you're getting at. There are more non-magical classes than actual magical classes, and with the selection of Skills any class can be varied.
Stray Cat Matt? Are you familiar with Palladium's TMNT Kickstarter last year? =)
I am not, but that's awesome! I'll have to look into it.
Is it Pa-lay-di-um? I always said Pal-a-dium (a as in arrow).
It had a comparatively realistic system with combat that was actually fun. The damage is a bit of a cludge, and I thought it should have included crits.

If Kevin wasn't batshit insane, Palladium would have a lot more love today.
Love Palladium! Didnt care for the Fantasy rpg, art was great though. TMNT and Robotech were the best
I wish they made palladium bestiary in the 80s
That’s one minute of a Designer that never get back. Not without a Time Machine.
1:50 So fucking cute
I'd be surprised if Siembieda isn't on the spectrum. I miss the games for sure though.

Really? I never got that impression from Palladium. Now Rolemaster on the other hand...
