Matt Rife has been under a lot of scrutiny after jokes made about domestic abuse during his stand up comedy special. Most of the criticism seems to have come from people outside of the comedy world, but this is what comedians had to say about the Matt Rife drama, including Joe Rogan, Mark Normand, Sam Morril, Stavros Halkias, Andrew Schulz, Akaash Singh, Tim Dillon, Luis J Gomez, Nick Mullen, Adam Carolla, Josh Wolf, Erik Griffin, and more! Thanks for watching!

who had the best reaction?
Matt did with that Link 😂
Matt & Akaash
Josh wolf. Just with how he broke down natural reaction vs acting the way people want you to
Anyone who was against it! Also! Hopefully it’s not the end of this world because people are looking for real comedy and there’s always people against the the greater of the good and try to keep everyone apart! We all one! Everything is One! The greatest thing is us together! No matter what happens?,.. JUST REMEMBER I LOVE YOU¡ And NOTHING DIES
@lkucare 100% - if you're a wolf fan, check out the newest episode of the Honeydew y'all!
I’m a domestic violence survivor-I laughed at the joke! I used to do standup comedy! You can’t cancel a comedian on every joke you don’t agree with or every comedian would be cancelled!
Oh wow you're not lying
Objecting to a joke is not "canceling." I don't find him funny. He has a smarmy bro quality to him that is off-putting. Maybe he can tour with Louis CK, who is actually funny but a repugnant person, and I'll skip both of them. Still not "canceling." 😂
Matt's "apology" link was the best punchline of the special 🤣🤣
That was the "home run" .... not the actual joke .
He torched the snowflakes
I loved the link of the helmet.... fucking amazing ... total GIGACHAD
Weird that when I tried to go to the link, nothing appeared. So I looked somewhere else to see what it showed and I thought it was hilarious 😂😂
The only real controversy here is that he's so popular with no good jokes.
Based
He is good when he riffs with the crowd but yeah not the best standups going.
Dude got plastic surgery and more than likely did steroids to appeal to a core audience that immediately turned on him for one joke. His whole career is almost like some performance art joke.
I love how everyone’s switching up now meanwhile me and a u agree that he always sucked
Thank you
Matt's talent is working the crowd not stand up in a big theatre
He’s so funny, up there with Tim Dillon and mark normand
@@numifiedv2722If you like him you like him, but Dillon and Normand are head and shoulders above him
His crowdwork skills is on par with the best crowdworkers
Not that easy bro...did you take public speaking in school, that shit hard as fuck. And this coming from a guy that was actually good at it. I've seen people tremble, throw up, shit is crazy stressful.
@@Joe-sg9ll Nah you just jealous he is pretty
The answer to his question with Jordan Peterson is "absurdism"
Thank you. I spent a minute trying to figure out what I would call it. No way would I have thought of that word.
Haha a man of culture I see, I just posted that same thing… it’s ironic yes, but it IS ironic because it’s absurd. The shocking bit to the brain i.e. joke is the contrast between the personality we kind of know and the outlandish things they say *during a comedic act*.
No its not
I'm a "DV survivor" and I don't mind jokes about it. I agree with what Josh Wolf said - laughing about it is part of healing for a lot of us. I HAVE to laugh at the bad shit I've been through, it's how I keep control over it.
It's a sign of healing. That the traumatic past doesn't hold any power over you and that it's not part of your identity anymore. That's why you are able to take jokes.
Amen
I’m a DMV survivor, too. Laughing at it is the only way I can wait in line for that long only to be told I’m in the wrong line
Same
I love Matt Rife he’s fucking hilarious😂 I love that he’s ruthless and that’s why he’s funny. Thank god he’s not afraid to offend! That’s a real comedian.
Everybody knew a portion of his audience had no experience in comedy. Surely now he'll just strengthen his core fan base and continue growing as long as he doesn't apologize.
He already "apologized"😂
Not just no experience but also laugh at any stupid shit.
Na right now he is basically just a shock commic. Shock comedy died in the early 90s. Obviously there are lots of people with shity taste but his core audience will never be big enough to make him a big star. The dude just isnt good enough to appeal to a wider audience. Well atleast right now hes not. Hes still young he can potentially get much better if he wants to
Absolutely an industry plant
He won’t though. If he was gonna attract core comedy fans he would’ve done it already. It’s super weird to be upset about what fans you attract.
Josh Wolf is 100% of the time the realest dude in the room
Lets be real, true comedy fans wouldn’t get upset over a joke. Period.
I’m upset over any jokes he’s just not funny and just because it’s edgy doesn’t mean it’s funny. It’s not even that edgy today
@@nt1331tn yup just because something is edgy or shocking dosent make it funny, so yes absolutely a fan of commedy can be upset about shity jokes.
Fans of true comedy should always be offended by lazy and shitty jokes
i agree with this but “true comedy fans” is such a corny reddit ass title
@@timpoolssentientbeanie5646yeah I was gonna say tell that to half the people on any Schaub, Schultz or Kreischer video at the moment.
This is exactly what Matt wanted. Publicity and to alienate his female audience witch he no longer wants to be associated with.
Well that WAS his audience so I'm not sure how that'll work out for him. He's also not funny
Not all women hate him, just the annoying ones. 😂
He never said he didn't want female fans and he still has plenty
Nah, he knows the ho's love a cheeky bad guy... Plus he gets a little cred from the currently popular macho podcast gatekeepers
I think the outrage from his female audience is motivated more by feelings of betrayal than offence.
His rise to fame was enabled by a mostly female audience supporting him on social media for a joke that was weak and unoriginal. Stav nailed it on the head on that WMBD podcast.
I saw Steve Hughes live in 2013. He did a r*pe joke and I’ve never laughed so hard in my life despite having my own personal experiences with r*pe.
You're not a fan if you try to cancel anyone.
Exactly
He may as well have said, “pls give me different attention,” and everyone just obliged. 😂
Good point
It would be different if he actually got arrested for domestic violence, but damn just dont listen if it bothers you.
It would be one thing if he was at real risk, but if people just don’t like and criticize the comedian, don’t listen to them if it bothers you
Not the biggest Rife fan, but i think he knew what he was doing, making a controversial, edgy joke as an opener. It set the stage for the rest of the special.
It's not edgy tho - that joke is a century old. It's been married, divorced, had kids, grandkids, and so on. This isn't new or original. It's just an old black eye joke about a woman not being able to cook. It's so overdone and not funny. But, it was still just short joke compared to the rest of the special - just surprised he did this for Netflix.
I saw Matt last week in Brisbane and you are spot on, he came out hard and fast & mentioned social media hating what he’d said. He was funny, poignant, gorgeous with a girl with cerebral palsy who was in the crowd and it was a fun gig. I’m a Mum who cares full time for my adult disabled Son and he talked a lot about that subject yet it just JOKES! Not reality, if he were going after special needs kids, different story. Love his work.
Rife doesn't have great material but he's great at crowd work. I see nothing wrong with that. A lot of great comedians get butt hurt the second an audience member tries to engage. I think Rife bridges that gap.
The special needs helmet rebuttal is better than the original joke to be fair
Not really. That’s just playground shit.
@@DGTHO So what are your made up pronouns?

@@DGTHO Nope. But thanks for answering my question without answering my question. 😂😂😂
Nahh you just don’t like new words. New words and groups of people get recognized. It’s what happens in life.
Mark Normand is the current KING of approaching offensive topics, making people laugh, without coming across as offensive or mean.
shulz looks absolutely insane. when is he gonna cut it out with that absurd facial setup?
Someone called it the "hitler youth set from wish" and now itll stay with me forever
Seriously. Who does he think he looks attractive to? Name one dude that looks like hitler that just kills with the ladies.
Matt Rife's looks have helped him have a bigger fan base but also brought unwarranted hate from jealous guys. He is funny.
You are even funnier with that comment.😂😂😂😂
You found one with the 1st reply. Are you a fisherman? 😂
I like how Marc Maron is saying Matt Rife sucks. Why does anyone care what Marc Maron says about comedy? Maron is comedies miserable old man and he's just not funny. He's an interesting guy, does well acting, decent writer... But, nobody has ever smiled and bragged to their friends because they're going to see Marc Maron. Matt Rife is one of the best crowd work comedians. His stand up wasn't a 10 out of 10... But, it was above average. He's got nowhere to go but up with his material. And if he's not feeling it he can just do crowd work. Lol. But yeah, when they said Marc Maron I instantly rolled my eyes.
Stavros is hating on Matt with his critique. Seems like a bitter comedian.
Stavros is really showing his insecurities by dissing Matt's joke telling and then commenting on his looks then dublin down on his criticism of Matt's comedy.
Stavros is looking for attention
His crowd work is funny, his standup is okay. I think he’d be a great talk show host or something similar.
He’s a bit better than just “okay” !! 😂
You could say Matt made a 'Natural Selection' of his fans!!
The woman who used her kid is gross. I saw it and was appauled that it got the attention it did. She is exploiting her autistic child, grossly.
Also it makes no sense. Rife clearly isn't sending it to the kid. It's a joke at the mom
Matt isn’t that funny but his response to those offended was hilarious
Hes not funny and his "response" is horseshit because literally nobody complained! Please enlighten me on who canceled him. I will wait...
A bunch of online rags wrote articles.
@@menwithven8114 lol, you could literally just google his name and find all the hate.
Stavros almost sounds a little jelly 😂
Because he's not even as funny as Rife. So overrated!
Yeah Stavros is obviously just being critical, it's not a good look... I don't even think Matt's *that* good, but Stavros is rather painfully unfunny himself, so, clearly he's upset that someone else might be actually successfully manipulating their audience
He's funnier than Brendan Schaub.
Your probably funnier than Brendan schaub
I've been hit by a boyfriend. Left him. Laughed at the joke. I hate people who are so precious and have these things you're not allowed to laugh at. Get over yourself
A lot of jealous comics. So Matt Rife is treating his Specials like Albums and bringing a different style of joke to each one. How come people don't get this basic concept?
the reason all his fans got mad is because his fans arent fans of comedy. if other comedians had his fans they'd get the same reaction but other comedians gained popularity because they are funny. he gained his popularity for his looks while still being decently funny
decently? I laugh more at matt rife than any other comedian
@@fanranker7426 who were your favorite comedians before Matt Rife?

This is the equivalent of a chick wearing a band t shirt & some dbag dude feels the need to give her a pop quiz. Beating women isn’t funny, no matter what excuses you losers try to make for your hero.
I think he was offered a "new hot guy comedian" kind of deal and he made the right choice for the long run.
He could have easily put out a really safe LA comic style special and cashed in on the broad appeal for the next decade.
By opening with something way edgier than I expected and getting a bunch of the experienced comics talking about him, I might remember his name when he puts the next one out.
You might remember his name, but are you gonna watch it? I couldn’t even get through this one bc it turns out edgy material doesn’t equal good material. I think he’s put himself in a weird situation where he’s too edgy for mainstream audiences but not funny enough for comedy fans.
@@reporterkermit3728 I would, because as a fan of comedy I know that comedians learn and grow. Matt has potential and a very unique position in comedy which makes him stand out. So yeah, I absolutely believe this was a strategic decision by him and honestly, I'm kinda here for it.

He’s allowed to make those jokes and his fans are allowed to think he’s a tool now.
Now?
First time hearing the joke. I laughed.

Male? More like the femboy version of the View.
Great take will still watch
This was blown way out of proportion. Andrew's take on Patreon was right. There are people who don't like him, a bunch of comedians that are jealous of his massive blow-up (Stavros), and people who want to jump in on the hate train for clicks. These people who are crying were waiting for an opportunity to attack without looking like haters
Lol stav is a lot more popular the Matt right now, why would he hate on him? You do realize commedy is subjective and what you migh think is fall down funnny lots of other people wouldn't dind it funny at all. Doesn't make them a hater, they just have different taste.
i swear i saw nothing but support for Matt until he started blowing up around June/July and then overnight he became hated
@@thisfool89 i get where he is coming from tho. You should too if you were a CT fan. Stav takes weird opportunities to morally grandstand on some of these more touchy subjects and his whole take on this is just bad considering he was a laugh track for Nick's jokes which were just as offensive. I do agree that Stav is way more popular than Matt and yes comedy is subjective, however i don't think he is genuine in his criticism. Stav is a degenerate and thinks by taking the "correct" stance on certain issues he can humanize himself a little.
@@dolphdangles1322 read into it deeper man. A great use of your time 🤦♂️🤡
@dolphdangles1322 Honestly, i dont follow any comedians off stage. So i have no idea what stav says about anything nore Do i have any idea what anyone else feels about Matt. All i know is when in this video Stav said you can joke about anything if the joke is funny which is 100% true, and i have been aware of Matt for a little while now and i personally dont find him funny at all. his jokes are not very good at all, so i can totally see how a regual who doesn't know who Matt is would be offended by his jokes. Imagine taking Andrew Dice Clay and try to put him on netflix today in 2023..... it would be the most disastrous thing to ever happen. Just because something is shocking doesn't mean it's funny, and honestly, you sound like you just dont like Stav, so you are using his pretty accurate accesment of this situation to take a shot at him. And just to be honest, the more of Stav in podcast, the less im liking him too.
Getting cancelled for a throw away joke like that is insane
Its funny how we see what we want to see. He knew what thr effect of the joke would be. He announced it for God's sake. He knows how the internet works. He's got everybody talking about him.
I think what really rubbed people the wrong way is that he got popular off of catering to his largely female demographic - and then does C- material on domestic violence and star signs. He’s a guy who got famous for doing crowd work and flirting with his audience, and his actual material is hacky and weak. He seems bitter that he pretty much only has female fans, when in reality he’d still be a feature act without them.
Exactly this! He is complaining his audience cant take a joke. But he built his career flirting jokingly with his female audience. That was his 'comedy'. He pulled a 180 on them and is surprised his audience didnt like it. Dude did it himself
@hilderenshof2476
But that's on the audience, not him. He's a comedian.
Everything he says could be potentially offensive to someone...how is he supposed to navigate that?
Matt Rife's crowdwork is brilliant, I can't think of anyone better currently. People need to grow-up and trust other people. Trust that Matt Rife knows domestic violence is wrong, and trust that comedy is about making jokes.
Still waiting on Shulz's haircut to get blended in....drives me nuts!
LEAVE MATTY ALONE!!!
I miss the 90's
Stavros calling out Rife for not being funny is ironic🤣🤣🤣
You can tell Stavros is pissed that Matt is famous, he knows Matt is in the right but still has to not be on his side.
Stav toeing the Hassan-line acting like cancel culture doesn’t exist is pretty sad
Not at all, he’s spot-on. If youre selling tickets you’re not cancelled.

Wolf said it best, we've all laughed at jokes we wouldn't say in public. In the interview with Jordan Peterson Rife was cool as hell. Haters gonna hate, they still have the choice to change the channel.
That joke wasn’t actually that bad
Dude it’s hilarious seeing male comics not defend Matt. I feel like a lot of these comics are jealous.
Maron doesn't count as a guy.. He's about as manly as Ethan 😀
Definitely. I felt that from stavros subtly putting down his punchlines
Interesting Stav noting it was his opening joke. I think the greatest and riskiest opening ever was Louis’s Fword Nword Cword bit, which was razor sharp. My main gripe with Rife is he’s not stealing but he’s got big so fast he still seems like an amalgamation of his influences.
So true. And other comics don't like him because he took short cuts in his career. They don't take him seriously because he got big without "putting in the work."
Wow. Other comedians should be sticking up for him.
Yeah regardless if they like it or not. The link was a good call too. I think I have to agree he is carving his actual long term audience out of it. I'm not his biggest fan but he is def funny to many and skilled and put in the time. Deserves just as much defense and grace as anyone else.
They know the story you idiots don’t know… it’s like when nobody likes the bosses kid
They can't get past the jealousy. Even though Matt's been doing comedy for nearly 13 years, he's still really young. These guys have been doing it just as long but are almost ready to retire and will never have his fame or looks
@@evelynwashere13 lol smh
Other comedians aren't going to defend him if they think he isn't funny, especially since his fame and popularity have come out of nowhere. There's a long history of "earning it" and "putting in your time" among comedians, and people who get famous without having a good act are often scorned by other comics. It has nothing to do with being "offensive."
Women have got to learn to cook to prevent situations like this.
Matt's response with link to helmet made me like him
His act is a strange one. Or at least the multitude of clips I’ve seen online. It’s not exactly standup. It’s a man using his looks, charisma, and wit to basically win over teenage/young girls in his audience. He is displaying EXACTLY the traits that attract women, and it’s basically him in a public forum, in front of a group of women, displaying his personality to the women admirers of the room.
This is strange. People are weird.

Yes Matt, glad you could discover that little aspect of comedy. It's obvious that he tried to piss off his audience so he could get the "cool comedy" audience, but the fact he picked the most tired cliche joke possible to do it is telling. Absolutely! He had some clip go viral on Tiktok and next thing he knows he's doing arenas from coast to coast! He knows he's not necessarily ready for that level but WTH do people expect him to do?? He can't just stick to the local chucklehut for $500 for the weekend when he can be making the millions
Matt is interesting because he tried to make his comedy a surprise by not revealing it. He did crowd work to get attention and PR. He did very well, but a lot of the audience then thought his comedy was going to be interactive crowd work and not a usual bit. They didn't know what they were signing up for since he didn't present it that way. He'd have a lot more hecklers since they think it's interactive.
Matt….Its called COMEDY RELIEF….And the old saying is F’em if they can’t take a joke….Stay Strong and keep doing ur shows

Stavros critiquing Matt Rife is comedy in and of itself
Stavros seems jealous of Matt.
Maybe jealous isnt the right word but he has never been sincere when talkjng about Matt.
How is Stavros gonna judge anybody when he's the most overrated comic around? Dude is so unfunny. I guess the same reason I'm judging Stavros, cause he can. 😂
Nah that black eye joke was good.. and the apology😂😂
I'm glad that most of other comedians were not upset about it. It is controvrersial. But it is true
The only punchline stav knows is laughing at his own joke
The key to knowing that shes using her kid is …”also you are mean to women”… is clearly something that was coached.
I hate people went at him for a joke on a comedy special haha it’s ridiculous with that being said ehhh
Man, Stavy really didn't think that was a good joke lol.
Dude Matt hit my kind of humor right on the head in that opening clip with Peterson 😂 The more outrageous the statement, the funnier it is.
I feel like a shane Gillis type summarization of the whole thing would be best suited for this
“Whole thing seems fuckin gay to me dude”
im pretty sure anyone with a brain laughed at this and all the people protecting their jobs in media are acting so disgusted. The guy at the start of the video was spot on, i bet all the people acting triggered laughed at worse jokes before. the world has gone mad
Calm down it was a mid joke
