Lyrics below:
[Verse 1]
There's no mistake, I smell that smell
It's that time of year again
I can taste the air
[Verse 2]
The clocks go back, railway track
Something blocks the line again
And the train runs late for the first time
[Verse 3]
A pebble beach, we're underneath
A pier that's just been painted red
Where I heard the news for the first time
[Chorus]
And all the friends lay down the flowers
Sit on the banks and drink for hours
Talk of the way they saw him last
Local boy in the photograph
Today
[Verse 4]
He'll always be 23
Yet the train runs on and on
Past the place they found his clothing
[Verse 5]
There's no mistake, I smell that smell
It's that time of year again
I can taste the air
[Verse 6]
The clocks go back, railway track
Something blocks the line again
And the train runs late for the first time today
[Chorus]
And all the friends lay down the flowers
Sit on the banks and drink for hours
Talk of the way they saw him last
Local boy in the photograph
Today
He's gone away

Music video by Stereophonics performing Local Boy In The Photograph. (C) 1997 V2 Music Limited
I'm a train driver who has had to deal with more than my fair share of fatal incidents (was previously in BTP) and after my last one my brother who loves his music and is also a driver shared this with me.
Ive never felt angry towards the people who take their lives on the railway. You have to be pretty desperate to go out that way. I have my own little reminders now and then, you pass that spot, same time of day, similar weather and it creeps back in. I usually give this a listen when i get home and think about the families who have to carry that pain around with them. The song captures all those "first" moments and the pain of memory so well. Helps me not feel so alone in it.
kind words my friend!
Stay strong, Keep going 👍🏼
I can't imagine how it plays with your head, wishing you the best.
Whenever i hear this song it still takes me back to April 98, love you Jenny we had a blast ❤
The song is about a boy called Paul who killed himself. I knew his mother well, a wonderful woman who would do anything for anyone. She passed away suddenly back in September and is now buried with Paul. Rest in peace, Sue. We miss you.
He didn’t kill him self a train ran into him
A
God rest his young soul 🙏🙏🙏
Oh wow sad, this song is the song I remember my stepdad to who killed himself in 1993, he was only 31 (I'm 39 now) only now I realise how young he was and it adds to the tragedy that he never saw another way out of what he must have been feeling.
RIP Paul and Sue 🖤🙏🏼
@@katieprysiaznyj7043 because of him killing himself
My introduction to tbe Stereophonics, I am 62, and it makes me feel vital, hungry and angry again! Wonderful
I believe this is one of the most underrated songs in the history...
Hell fucking yeah
I believe the "underrated" comment is on pretty much every video and is pretty much a meme now.
@@DaveTasteI've seen it on Beatles videos 🙈
@@Owen-hg3cu LOL
It's absolute quality
It's a beautiful thing you did to immortalise him into your own legacy...❤
The melancholy seam runs deep in us Welsh. This song is the epitome of it.
R.I.P Stuart Cable. 5 years have passed. A true Welsh Legend!
All Cymraeg are " legend ".
This is not about Stuart cable get your facts right mate
Caitlin Davies who said it was ?
ethan Jones
This song was written about paul one of the bands good friends
Reminds me of being a teenager growing up in the Welsh valleys. We can all relate to this song.
Loved this. When MTV was good they played this. Happier times
All the early stuff was based on real life events or observations the lads witnessed or went through. Back in the 90s the area in which they lived, in similar fashion to the rest of south wales had its share of tragedy, poverty and upset. Towns full of characters and wonderful stories / assumptions behind them. Its what made Word Gets Around such a classic album. Same sized feet, looks like Chaplin and Billy Davey's daughter all of huge relevance. One of the very best things to come our of South Wales Valleys (except for the World War winning coal export) was this band in particular.
I went to see stereophonics every time they played with my best friend , sadly he died in a road accident and I broke down in the car tonight as it's his birthday coming up and this came on the radio , the chorus always hits me going to his scene of the crash but the lyrics it's that time of year again , it was like he requested it , forever forever will always cherish this band
LewisWilliamsArt sorry to hear that mate
Beautifully written..
So sorry for your loss mate
So sorry for your loss mate, chin up & put on some tracks from this truly GREAT band 👍
So sorry for your loss.
Sounds just as fresh as it did when I first heard it. My favourite phonics tune
It's impossible to rate stereophonics tunes in order, every time the next tune comes on your like; "No, this one."
yes
RIP my mate Francis Matthews, who appears kissing and shaving in this video. His life and times reflected the tragedy of this song. You're much missed Franky!
Sorry to hear that bud..classic song.
If anyone ever gets a chance to see these guys live, just go. They are incredible live. Love them.
i was lucky enough to see them live in a small club in boston great gig
I’m going in March 18. Can not wait 😊
Saw them live in 2008 at V festival.
Seen them at donington many years ago amazing glad I got to see stuart cable with them
Seen them twice bloody brilliant
Real definition of underrated
25 years ago today I lost my 18 year old big bro, my 'local boy in a photograph ' .....
Miss u Edd x
1:40-2:25, the greatest fucking part in the whole damn rockhistory
This is the best rock song ever for me
So unbelievably underrated, but I guess that's what makes me appreciate them more!
Standing the test of time. Pure genius.
Loved this song as a teenager....its only when I listened to it when I was older did I realise how sad it was. It captures perfectly what it feels like when a young life gets snuffed out in an accident. That person will be preserved forever they were at the time, even as the world just goes about its business as normal.
Word Gets Around is one of the greatest social commentary albums ever - bought it in 1997 when it first came out and its just as fresh today, great songs, from the heart, summed up smaller town life to a tee.
Must be something about Welsh bands and social/political commentary bands. Phonics and MSP are both brilliant at painting pictures
This was gonna be my funeral song. 20something going nowhere and pretty miserable. It took time but I met and married a beautiful person, my soul mate. 2 children and an angel later, I look back and can't help thinking- glad I hung in there.
I was a drugged up loser but now .... I'm doing..... ok. I'm doing ok. Hang in there people you'll be just fine.
Mr snruB probably one of the finest songs from the 90s
good things come to good people hang in there and ..... be nice , have this at your funeral when your a great grandad
Phil Strange Music can definitely save a soul. I may just do that, you never know :) Great tune Mr Roadhouse
Mr snruB brilliant to read this.
scott Newton and everyone, thanks for the supportive comments. I always try to be positive and helpful to others in life too. Makes all the difference to some people :)
Remember this coming out, being on MTV. Bought the album soon after, was about 13 or 14. Brilliant album, every track was solid.
Wow this song is a hidden gem💗
love your comment so true!! Britpop & Post Britpop produced some timeless classics, shame the young ones of today only listen to RnB and never make the charts anymore
This band gets better and better! I hear the new songs- brilliant- I hear the older songs - brilliant! Thanks Stereophonics for keeping true music alive! Keep the faith.
Love this song it was so underrated when it came out shod have been a top 10 for sure
Absolute belter of a track
god i love this song
my favourite song from stereophonics, takes me back when I was a lot younger, summer of 1998.
Great song, and the best they ever did by quite a long way.
Agreed this is by far their greatest ever song . Just stunning
A thousand trees is pretty close for me
Agree
@@RabbidTheNabbit also Dakota imo
Yes it's a great song and I won't disagree that it's their best BUT A Thousand Trees and The Bartender and the Thief run it pretty close.
I've been falling so deeppppppppp in love with this song
puts the hairs up on the back of my neck, incredible band
わずか3分強だけど1つの曲というものが表現できる目一杯を表現した素晴らしい曲
聴くたびに心が痛くなるがまた謙虚に頑張っていこうと自分に誓う
I've been with you since 1997... mae gymraeg yn byth!
Ps. I ran Tom's in ponty and was lucky enough to meet you all in the Angel Hotel. Fun times. Good memories. Peace & love to the Phonics.. past and present ✌❤🎶🌈
Such a sad but great song.
And true too
One of the best tracks 🎧💣🔥🏴🎶💯💥💥💥💥
My first day out in Wales on holiday - thought I'd kick start it with this! "...I can taste the air..."
I need more music like this, word gets around is such a great album.
Such a great song, great band...Wales produces great bands, and these guys are no exception! Simply brill!
Such a great and emotional song. I might not have known you mate, but rest in peace brother
My first ever live gig was James in Manchester, we were in the bar, I heard this playing and went to run into the arena, my mate said “it’s not cool to watch the support”, I didn’t care, I ran up saw the Welsh flag (I’m half Welsh) and rocked to this. To this day those same lads are so jealous!
I know that tour. It was my first live gig as well, except when we went it was the only date they were supported by Gene and not Stereophonics.
Always watch the support, man.
This song (as do all the songs off the Stereophonics first two albums) reminds me of when my boyfriend and i started going out, all those years ago. And even thou we've just broke after 11 and 1/2 years just hearing this song brings me back to those great days when we were so in love. Good times, good times :)
And hows life now? Still alive? 🙏🏼😊👍🏼
Favourite phonics song
Heard this today. Heard it before in the past. Great song.
A kick in da face amazing song, reminds me of times I have never lived
and i love the manics too
Great sounds different types of music great sounds
The best track by the best welsh band that's ever lived. I was at coldplay last night when kelly played dakota for Stuart. 10 years so quick. its still raw xx
Whatever they do, they won't match this. From the lyrics to the power of Kelly's vocals!!!.
brilliant stereophonics
Now I understand the lyrics... I cry every time. Good/bad/heartbreak/er song.
Sorry lad that u chose that pal. God bless Paul❤
There's no mistake I smell that smell. ,It's that time of year again🏴
it's about a young aberdare lad who was 23 at the time of the suicide.. first album was all about the local area
Emma Morgan correct Emma, all about local life
He was 18 they just wrote 23 so that it would rhyme
Who's listening in 2020❤️
my favorite for decade
This is the best stereophonics song.
Super geniales los stereophonics
Saludos desde Puebla, México!
Loves it ❤❤❤
I saw an episode with Jamie where he played this song and I don't know how I never heard it. ❤
Can’t believe this song is 25 years old. Saw them support Skunk Anansie at the Barras in March 97!
this song makes all the hairs on my arms stand up, lyrically and musically just amazing.
Pure stereophonics! Love it & still a belter in 2021 !! Belfast concert ?? YES PLEASE !!
When i was little my dad used to play me this song if i couldnt get any sleep, its such a beautiful and nostalgic song for me, its such a good thing they made this song for the person its about who was ran over by a train and all the songs on the album are about people im the area of where it happened, such a thoughtful band with an amazing talent :,)
Fkinell.... was your Dad Frankenstein ? lol
I really like your dad played this song to you to get to sleep! It makes sense to me to do so, but I didn't think anyone else thought the same!
beautifully melodic, melancholy, empowering, belting rock tune. it's what the phonics do best.
Classic song my fav .... or one of them.... so many to choose from!
Being Welsh...Every time I listen to this i just have Goose Bumps all over! The best by a long way! Love it!!!!
0:29 Clocks go back - it's that time of year again. Time to remember all our friends and family who passed away at this time of year.
Wha
There's no mistake
I smell that smell
It's that time of year again
I can taste the air
Clocks go back railway track
Something blocks the line again
And the train runs late for the first time
A pebble beach, we're underneath a pier, just been painted red
Where I hear the news for the first time
And all the friends lay down the flowers
Sit on the banks and drink for hours
Talk of the way they saw him last
Local boy in the photograph
He'll always be twenty three
Yet the train runs on and on
Past the place they found his clothing
There's no mistake
I smell that smell
It's that time of year again
I can taste the air
The clocks go back railway track
Something blocks the line again
And the train runs late for the first time
And all the friends lay down the flowers
Sit on the banks and drink for hours
Talk of the way they saw him last
Local boy in the photograph
Today, is gone away
😢
“Something blocks the line again” imagine how sad it must be to be that time of year and remembering when your friends body blocks the lines but it might be a pile of leaves and sticks since it’s autumn…
Their best song on their best album
The best thing to come out of Wales since Burton, 20+ yrs now & if anything they're getting better, Kelly is up there with Weller imho 🍷👍😉
And feeder !
This song is so true of the region.Growing up in Mid Glamorgan, this was far too often seen as a way out.
Fan number one of this guys...!!
R.I.P Steve pemberton congleton legend
love this song and heres 2 many more.......
My 1st ever gig(years ago) in Birmingham x Rip Stuart 💗
Absolutely banging tune
i know lots people have posted about this over the past year but i have to say it to show my respect for a legend R.I.P Stuart Cable- ex-drummer of stereophonics he may have died but his name will last forever
Easily the best rock band to come out of wales in recent times, one which can stand amongst the great Brit bands.
Manic Street Preachers?
@@travoltasbiplane1551 both fantastic bands
Welsh and proud!!!
De lo mejorcito, que he escuchado últimamente.
Best stereophonics song love it
Jun Ochiai. Wha
People say underrated , two sold out two day tour in Cardiff suggests otherwise ❤
This song hits you in the chest.

this guys are completly underrated!!!
Phonics, loved you in 90s
Love you still
Always have, Always will
Cymru am byth. Valleys boys done good!
best welsh band ever! Also one of the best bands ever.
One of their finest.
No one really notices that these songs are poems in disguise, my English teacher taught me this poem in year 7 and I loved it! We wrote essays and analysed it in detail and the plot is actually really interesting! At 10 likes I can explain it :))
1:43 “blaah, blah blah, blaaaa ahaaa” so on, so on.
back in the days when the stereophonics were an exciting band with really brilliant lyrics, now well ya know
It’s different and a bit of a change, bit slow compared to their other albums but it’s alright..
Omg his voice is amazing x love you Kelly 💕😍
Pressed repeat so many times, amazing song. It's so moving, really makes me think x
