Kayaking to Burgess Falls, Sparta TN

- On May 22nd we started out on an early morning 3 and a half hours drive, leaving Western North Carolina and entering the state of Tennessee on the hunt for a new area to explore. Our destination was Sparta, Tennessee where we had a great time kayaking and exploring Burgess Falls. The Burgess Falls is a cascade waterfall on the Falling Water River located within the Burgess Falls State Park, in Putnam and White counties, Tennessee, in the United States. The waterfall spills approximately 136 feet into a large limestone gorge enclosed by sheer 100-200-foot walls.

I live in the West and I love the idea of living in a place with so much water but I have always known lake and river water to be cold and clear and it seems like most of the bodies of water I have seen east of the Mississippi are opaque and green. It would take some getting used to.

It's so powerful being so close to the falls! I was surprised by the snake on the way. But it's a wonderful environment. I can't believe we can canoe in such a natural setting.👍

When you do be sure to add a second day for Fanchers Falls. It's a 4 mile paddle in the opposite direction, but it is also pretty cool. I'll be posting a video on it in the near future.

It must feel pretty amazing turning up to a new place with your craft in tow! You really have the potential to go on so many adventures! I've always wanted to get back onto the water since last summer! And yet again you end up exploring some incredible natural wonders! Such a wonderful waterfall, I could look at it all day!

it's never too late to learn to swim. Plus we have life jackets to help us float if we fell in.

It was one of the most spectacular waterfalls I have found so far.
I went hiking last year in fall. thinking of going back for a kayaking trip. Noone was around when I went. hope it's not as crowded as in the video
Burgess Falls is a real treat. many people go to enjoy it so it would be hard to find a day when it isn't crowded, but it's totally worth it

Great video! How deep is the water along the float? Is it safe for novice paddlers? Thanks.
the water isn't too deep and as long as it hasn't rained that much it is a fairly safe paddle. Always wear your life jacket just in case
We climbed down the falls once before the walkway was torn down. We have taken the boat up to the falls since then. Although I hate to see the boaters throwing wakes on kayakers like that. I always slow down enough to pass with no wake. Pretty inconsiderate on their part.
Well, you take the good and the bad... After all it was another boater who stopped and helped the kid later in the video, we would have had a difficult time without them.
Just as a side note Burgess Falls is a no drone zone.
Yeah, we no longer use drone footage. We've learned quite a bit since this video was made.

I have a question, do they rent Kayaks at the ramp you set off from. I am going in a couple of weeks and my girlfriend decided she wanted to fly there rather than drive from central Florida. So I couldn’t take my kayaks with me.
I know there was a kayak rental when we were there, however you might want to check with some locals. I would recommend checking with the "Kayaking/Canoeing Adventures of Tennessee And Beyond" facebook group for up to date local knowledge. Someone might tell you which outfitter runs the rentals so you can make sure you reserve them.

How long did it take you to kayak and hike?
About an hour to kayak to the falls, then an hour back to the launch point. For the hike I think it was about 45 minutes each way.
