No it's not I idiot he studied at the kodokan. Kosen judokas were in Kyoto schools which is nowhere near Tokyo. Mitsuyo maeda taught kodokan judo or (kano ju jutsu) when he went to Brazil. The only reason people think he taught them kosen judo is because they focused more on the ground than throws. Before maeda came to Brazil he traveled around the world as a prize fighter. He fought many different styles beating almost all of them. But he once lost one of his fights to a catch wrestler and after he lost he trained in catch wrestling to incorporate it into his judo. (Ground techniques) but what u forget is in the kodokan back then they did plenty of groundwork alot more tgan today it wasnt 90 percent throws 10 percent ground it was more like 70 to 30 so all he did was use the catch wrestling to polish up his judo newaza. The Gracies also wanted to prize fight vale tudo and wanted to have a perfect self defense art for the street and felt that ground techniques were more effective for stopping an opponent since 85 percent of fights end up on the ground. What does that even mean really? When you think about it BJJ is a ruleset, Judo is a ruleset, WTF Taekwondo is a ruleset, ITF Taekwondo is a ruleset. I could carry on, but my point is all styles of fighting are affected by their ruleset, philosophy, and strategies.
@@Sto79Be In this context, it means that the title should be "Judo vs BJJ" imo, as Kosen Judo is not a separate style of Judo, it's still Judo, but with with a different competition/sparring ruleset. That's all I was referring to.
true, but when the ruleset differs, technique emphasis differs, and different „breeds“ of practitioners are developed. When a judoka says he practices „Kosen Judo“ (unlike unless he studies on some of the traditional japanese universities), you expect from him a strong newaza. At the end, BJJ also comes from judo with a different rule set emphasis. So I think to add the label „Kosen“ is totally valid to make a more accurate description.
Yes. The Oda school engaged in hikkikomi/pulling guard and taking the fight to the ground whereas Kano preferred throws into newaza. My understanding was that Kano was not into guard pulling and spending inordinate time on the ground.
