'Calamity' was definitely the right word for it. The destruction wrought by Bahamut is specifically referred to as the Seventh Umbral Calamity throughout the game.
All the events shown in the ARR opening are meant to precede the events of the game, including that flashforward. The axe-wielder (who players affectionately refer to as either Meteor Survivor or Derplander) is basically the player stand-in for the game's trailers.

Thank you so much for this context. Throughout the FF games I’ve played the calamity lore has been peppered in so reading the lore in game and various characters taking a similar form I had a feeling the calamity would appear in FF14 somewhere seems a huge story thread here 🎉

@@AnthonyAllenYT For sure! There's of course a lot more behind what led up to the Calamity, but I didn't wanna give up too much while there's so much they get into later, even past ARR's post-game into other expansions.
Once the game really gets into it- if you ever have an interest in it -there's a couple different uploads of all the 1.x cutscenes (here is one person's: ua-cam.com/video/vja5eQoJDso/v-deo.html) and a variety of stuff that talks about related things, but I think that's a fair bit off from where you are.

That calamity was the end of the original version of ffxiv, the axe-dude is the player stand-in and that spell by the old guy threw us 5 years into the future, into the start of A Realm Reborn, ffxiv 2.0. A relaunch of the game because the original was..... Not good. It's awesome they played that cutscene up til the teleport away at the end of 1.0, right before they shut the servers down. So they made the shut down and relaunch into actual canon events in the world of ffxiv.
