Your videos are great and just subscribed about a week ago. Thank you for taking the time to help us! I just asked myself if aeration could help my lawn, found your video, and it seems you described exactly what I’m seeing in my lawn, with thick lush areas and other areas that are flat and thin. My gut would say try not to do this during rainy seasons so the holes don’t just fill in. I see you’ve recommended spring and fall based on others’ questions, but given the choice which would you say is best? I have St. Augustine grass in NE Florida (Clay County). Thank you!
Well established St Augustine lawn in southern Florida; seems aerating in the fall here is a good idea. I definitely see signs of compaction like this in my lawn.
Thanks man I appreciate your knowledge I live in Jacksonville and I have clay soil so I’m thinking of aerating putting down some liquid aeration plus fertilizer and hope for the best
I have not used it myself. I have heard things about it up north but haven't heard much when you used in our warmer climates. I know that some of the liquid detach has very bad active ingredients. The ingredient that loosens the soil also destroys it. We love mechanical areation because it's guaranteed to work and also you don't add a single chemical the lawn and great results. Probably the best natural thing you can do for the lawn is an aeration.
3 to 4 inches. You can but it will an extreme amount of work. If you put in the work though you can get the results!!! Thanks for the comment and support 👍
My st aug has some areas of soil compaction. Blades growing sideways and can see the stolons. Can I use a hand core aerator (plugs) vice having to deal with renting a core aerator from home depot. It is about 20x10 area. Thanks
You can but from my experience the hand tool will do as good a job. Now if it is a small area no problem. But if it most or even half the lawn i would recommend a machine. Thanks for the comment.
Temperatures 80 and below the jext morning then 2 days a week. Temperature 80 and above water in the next morning and 3 to 4 days a week for the next two weeks.
@@filibertoserna3514 I don't recommend because of the ingredients in them. They will loosen the soil but will destroy organic matter and microbials in the soil which are essential to plant life. Mechanical is the best way to loosen the soil.
The winter storm that went through Texas “froze” my St. Augustine. Blades are either brown or all twisted up like someone freeze dried grass. Is it all dead or would it come back?? Any ideas?
Hope you and your family are safe!!! Its going to be tough to tell right now. Best thing you can do is check the runners (stolons). If the runners are still green it will come back. Best thing you can is stay off the lawn. Wait for spring then fertilizer with a 10 10 10 with a lot of micronutrients in it. I recommend do light rounds of fertilizer but more often. Make sure your watering is on point as well. Be patient with it. By June you know what is fully dead and what will recover. I hope this helps.
Thank you! Yes super helpful. I will try as you say and see what happens. Everyone’s lawn is either dead or frozen so I guess there will be a lot of demand for sod or fertilizers.
@@skytom88 I bet!! St. Augustine does not do well in anything below just freezing. If you can find it humic acids and sea kelp are an amazing attention to your lawn program. We use it for all our customers on every application. Glad we could help. Take some pictures and keep me updated.
@@bettercallchadd Not sure how I can send photos here but I'll keep some photos. I'm going to treat with Anderson's 10-10-10 and will spray some sea kelp too. I regularly put down humic acid (granular form) every few months or so. Weather's back to 70s in south Texas. Kind of unbelievable how we went from teens/20s to 60/70s in a matter of days. I've watered the grass just to "wake it up".
Similar situation here near Austin, Texas again this year. A freeze came and seemed to wipe out a lot of the Saint Augustine. A month later, some parts have plenty of decent runners but with compacted soil, and other parts are completely overrun with weeds. Is it better to aerate first and then go after the weeds with a post emergent, or knock out the weeds first and then aerate? The concern with aerating first might be giving the weeds more of an opportunity to thrive. Conversely the concern with killing the weeds first would be that the grass is already stressed. Basically stuck between a rock and a hard soil 😉 Thanks!
Great video! What time of the year would you recommend to aerate my st agustine lawn? I live in the Houston Tx area. We’re in the middle of June now, is it too late?
Spring and fall are best. But you have severe compaction and the lawn is not growing now is the best time. As long as you have an irragtion system you should be good to go!!! Thank you for the comment and support 👍
We are Jacksonville and St.augustine which is pretty much sand so sometimes almost no plugs which is not ideal. But a lot of the new neighborhoods are very swampy. I usually get plugs about an inch long. Alteast here the plugs are very small and no need for clean up. Thanks for the comment and support 👍
Absolutely!!! This same exact process will work amazing on St.augustine. now is the perfect time of year as well. Thank you for the comment amd support.
Great video!! My lawn definitely needs it. I’m renting a aerator next week. I have a sprinkler system and was wondering besides flagging the heads of the sprinklers, will the aeration penetrate any of the pvc pipes?
It should not!!! All lines should be buried 6 inches or deeper. We have done over 500 aerations and have not hit a line yet!!!! Run your irragtion after to be sure!! Thanks for the comment and support 👍
Along with fertilizer, do you recommend applying a pre-emergent after aerating the St aug? Do you have a brand of fertilizer and/or pre-emergent that you like for St aug? I’m based out of the Orlando area. Thanks
I recommend waiting about 2 months after an aeration to apply a pre emergent. That is the down side of a spring aeration but sometimes it is needed. The reason being if the pre emergent hits the roots of st.aug it will kill them and damage the lawn. I would use something like a 10 2 10 for fertilization. I hear sunniland is a good but I personally do not use their products. I highly recommend checking out some of my newer videos. I cover fertilizer and pre emergents. Thanks for the comment and support 👍

Hey chadd! Love your videos! How often can I aerate st Augustine? I’m planning on buying my own aerator (the one that looks like a brake rotor)
Make sure it's for core aerations. Every 2 to 4 years.
Great video! I'm new to Texas. What time of year would you do this for a st Augustine lawn?
Spring and fall are the best. If the lawn is in very bad shape and really needs its you can do it in the summer as well.
Hey Chad! Do you work in the Volusia County area by chance? I need help with my St. Augustine grass.
Unfortunately, I do not. Email at turforganics904@gmail.com I do offer online consultations that can help.
Who should I contact to have an aeration done? I can’t seem to find anyone I live in clearwater Florida
Lawn and spray companies will be your best bet.

How long after areating do i water? And how often?
Its February. I am i houston texas with st augustine grass
You can water the next morning!! Just twice to three times a week, depending on temperatures. For February twice should be enough.
Thoughts about liquid aeration?

St. Augustine lawn grows best at warm temperatures, can I aerate on summer?
Absolutely!!!! Just make sure you can give it adequate water after to help the stress from the aeration!!
Thanks for the comment and support 👍
WOW! Maybe this is what my lawn need.....🤔
It most likely is. Feel free to check through some of our other vidoes to learn more.
Hi, do you think it’s a good time to aerate my lawn now? 12/13/22 westside Jacksonville fl.

how deep are your plugs? any way to do by hand to reach similar results?
3 to 4 inches.

Great video. I purchased an aerator. Thanks again
Great purchase!!
You are very welcome.

Did it work?
Hi Chadd. When would be a good first time to aerate St. Augustine? Ours is newer, a little over 1 year old, and pretty well established.
Nice Results. I had read online that doing a core aeration on SA could damage the runners?
It can stress it and do minor damage but the long term game is highly worth it.
From my experience in stress or damage is gone within the first week.

Looks great. What type of soil do you have in your area? Mine is sand and looks like the before, I’m thinking about aerating.
Sand, with a fill dirt clay mix.

Why not show the aeration process, at least briefly?
